Heartbreak again for injured Kewell

MELBOURNE Heart will play one of the most important games in its short history without Harry Kewell after the captain was again ruled out because of injury.

Kewell's absence will stretch to seven consecutive matches after coach John Aloisi said the Socceroos legend had not recovered adequately from a training session earlier in the week.

And as pressure builds on the coach to retain his job ahead of the clash with Adelaide at AAMI Park, Aloisi said he had received strong backing from the club's administration to turn the team's fortunes around after a winless start to the season.

Kewell has played just 68 minutes this season after arriving amid much excitement during the winter.

Those minutes came against his old club, Melbourne Victory, in Round 1 before he succumbed to what was said to be a whiplash injury.

Kewell later said he had been dealing with "a few things that have come up", giving credence to speculation that a soft tissue injury was also keeping him on the sidelines.

He suffered an ankle injury barely 48 hours out from what was meant to be his comeback game against Western Sydney in Round 5 and has not played a game since.

Kewell trained alone and in non-Heart gear at Gosch's Paddock on Thursday _ just 100m away from his former Victory teammates _ while the rest of the Heart squad trained at Epping.

That session was just days after Aloisi declared Kewell would feature in some part against the Reds today and 10 days after chief executive Scott Munn said the 35-year-old would return against Newcastle last Sunday.

He wasn't seen at Saturday's run around at AAMI Park.

"He hasn't come through a training session as well as we would have liked," Aloisi said.

"There is no point risking him unless he is fit. There are still 20 games to go."

Heart has taken just two points from the first seven games of the season, while the club has won just eight times during Aloisi's 34-game tenure.

But the coach was seemingly unnerved when asked about the mounting pressure yesterday.

"We can't let the outside pressure affect us," he said.

"There's always speculation. Management have told me to just concentrate on my job. They haven't said to me John this is your last chance and you are out."

Patterson leads Blues fight back

NSW young gun Kurtis Patterson led a fightback against Tasmania at Bellerive with a first half-century to become the youngest player to make a Sheffield Shield hundred.

Patterson was unbeaten on 52 at stumps on day two, putting on 98 with paceman Trent Copeland (54) as the pair rescued the Blues from trouble at 5-102.

NSW were 5-200 in reply to Tasmania's first innings total of 354.

Patterson became the youngest player to score a Shield century when he made 157 against Western Australia two years ago as an 18-year-old.

Now 20, he hadn't reached 50 since that stunning debut in three first class games prior to Hobart.

He hit four boundaries in an impressive knock, while Copeland cracked nine fours.

It came as former Test paceman Ben Hilfenhaus suffered a recurrence of a side strain.

Hilfenhaus opened the bowling for the Tigers but managed just five overs for figures of 0-12 before he was forced to leave the ground.

The 30-year-old first suffered the injury in his last Test, also in Hobart, against Sri Lanka last December.

Hilfenhaus played 27 Tests, taking 99 wickets at 28.50 but had managed just five scalps in three Shield games before the clash with the Blues.

He was rested for Tasmania's home loss to Victoria two weeks ago and went wicketless in their next match, a draw with South Australia in Adelaide.

Australia's fast bowling stocks have been ravaged by injury in recent seasons and Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson and Pat Cummins all remain unavailable for national selection.

Left-armer Sam Rainbird impressed for the Tigers with 2-55, removing Scott Henry (15) and Ben Rohrer (21) in the space of five runs.

NSW lost Nic Maddinson (14) at 1-19 and Ryan Carters at 2-57 before Rainbird's double strike reduced the visitors to 4-87.

Blues spinner Steve O'Keefe will begin the second innings on a hat-trick after earlier mopping up the Tigers' tail with 4-74.

Mulvey says rookie Acton will Roar

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 29 November 2013 | 14.23

BRISBANE coach Mike Mulvey is confident rookie goalkeeper Matt Acton can handle the pressure of being thrust into the first A-League start of his senior career.

Acton will go between the posts for the league leader's clash with Perth at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday after regular `keeper Michael Theo succumbed to a shoulder injury.

Mulvey confirmed Theo and defender Jade North (groin) will both miss the match against the Glory, giving 21-year-old Acton his debut for the Roar.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Townsville-born Acton will become the 100th player to represent the Roar, completing a long wait following his move to Brisbane in 2007.

A former Queensland Academy of Sport member, Acton was promoted to the Roar's senior squad last year.

Mulvey has no worries about throwing the unheralded youngster straight in as Theo's replacement.

"It's very simple. He's been training for this, he's been selected for this and it's his turn now," Mulvey said.

"I'm sure he'll step up to the plate.

"He's one of 11 ... Matty's one of us. We've got faith in him. He's going to come in and do a good job."

North was withdrawn from the match after experiencing tightness in the groin he only recently injured.

"We played on a heavy pitch in Newcastle and we backed up in five days and he's just tightening," Mulvey said of the former Socceroos defender.

"If we push these guys and they get a slight strain, it will be a three or four week injury rather than just the one game injury." He will be replaced by James Donachie, who had been playing in North's absence earlier in the campaign.

The Glory are also battling selection issues ahead of their trip to the venue where they controversially lost the 2012 grand final. Scott Jamieson (achilles) and William Gallas (calf) are both out injured while captain Jacob Burns will be sidelined because of suspension.

Despite their worries, Mulvey is still wary of the Glory in a match that has taken on extra significance for both clubs since that 2012 decider.

"I think they've got players to cover that, it will probably make them hungrier, the players that are coming in, as well," he said.

"They've got capable players. They've got Steve Pantelidis who will come in. We've got great respect for Perth."

Ace a nice pointer for Green

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

THE first thing Richard Green did after hitting a hole-in-one at Royal Sydney was spin around to see what he'd won.

As usual, it was nothing. There was no car, no speedboat and no big novelty cheque so Green had to be happy with an ace that kicked him up the to third on the Australian Open leaderboard.

"They're always nice to get," Green said.

"I had a bit of a quick glance around to see if there was a car or something there but no, unfortunately. In New Zealand I was a day short of $100,000 or something. But anyway, it's just the luck of it, isn't it?"

After a steady opening round, Green had moved into the top five when he arrived at the 143m, par-three sixth. Using a brand new set of clubs, the left "flushed" an eight iron and watched it bounce twice and curl into the hole.

It was his fourth professional ace.

"I had one in the New Zealand Open years ago, one in the American Express Tournament I think it was, one of the world golf championships in San Francisco probably about nine years ago now is the last one and then this one is the one I can remember. I think the other couple that I've had have just been in social golf," Green said.

There is a Volvo is up for grabs for a hole-in-one at the tournament but at the 14th, and only on the last day.

But Green, who plays on the European Tour, was more than content with a round of 66 that felt as clean as he'd hit the ball in years.

"It's nice to build a bit of confidence from hitting good shots again," Green said.

"It was a very nice day. I've been struggling a little bit of late with my game and changed a few things, changed my clubs, changed my driver; just about everything this week and it's just started to show some good signs again. I haven't hit shots like I have the last two days for a long time, probably about three years. It's building, confidence is building."

Mundine card farce as fight canned

TONIGHT'S Anthony Mundine fight card has been decimated with one undercard fight already cancelled and another on the verge of being canned.

The NSW Combat Authority has cancelled the Bilal Akkawy-Jacques Henrisson fight after being made aware of the wild mismatch the contest promised to be.

MUNDINE v MOSLEY: GET LIVE UPDATES THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND FOLLOW TONIGHT'S FIGHT IN OUR OUR LIVE BLOG BELOW

Akkawy is 7-0 with six knockouts while Henrisson (0-12-2) is yet to register a win in 14 fights.

It is understood the Victorian Combat Authority withdrew its support after being made aware of the quality of Henrisson's opponent.

BUZZ: MUNDINE IS THE GREAT SHRINKING MAN

"The Victorian board withdrew their clearance for Henrisson," NSW Combat Authority's Craig Waller said.

"I don't know why, all I got was an email that said they withdrew their clearance."

An anonymous tip warned the Victorian authorities after the caller originally failed to convince NSW officials the fight was a mismatch.

NSW Combats Sports Authority chairman Denis Fitzgerald confirmed the Akkawy-Henrisson was cancelled today while another was currently under review.

"It's very much an operational matter that the chief combat sports inspector is looking after, but basically they have informed me of that," Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said the Authority is also waiting on information from interstate authorities before a decision would be made on the other fights.

"They are waiting on information from interstate because if they are not registered in NSW and they're not registered anywhere else they can't fight," Fitzgerald said.

"They're checking with other bodies to see whether they are in fact registered because, as you know, people in the fight game sometimes tells fibs."

The fight promises to be a night of mismatches and barely contestable bouts.

Ahmed Dib (9-0) will fight Mike Wanprasent (8-23-1) and, in another mismatch, Sam Ah See (7-0) fights Daniel Roy Maxwell (1-15-1).

Both fights will go ahead while, elsewhere, Dylan Emery (7-0) fights Singkasem Sithkruwin on debut, and they're not even the other fight in question.

That would be David Aloua (8-1) versus Mosese Sorovi.

Sorovi is 43 and has fought just five times in the past 13 years, which included an eight year lay-off, and will be an incredible mismatch if it goes ahead.

Sorovi is currently unregistered.

"He's trying to get registered at the last minute in Western Australia," Waller said.

"All I need is to do is get a reply from Western Australia."

The only fight featuring two fighters relatively evenly matched fighters, other than the main event, is Joseph Kwadjo (21-6) against Renold Quinlan (5-0) and NRL player Blake Ferguson on debut against fellow debutant Luke Turner.

The eight fight card will now be seven, or maybe six fights.

For Mundine, the dream is a crack at supremely gifted WBA super welterweight Floyd Mayweather, indisputably the world's best pound for pound boxer.

VETERAN jockey Darren Gauci was taken to Bendigo Hospital after suffering a heavy fall in the closing stages of the seventh race at Bendigo when he was dislodged from Royal Mephisto.

Gauci had gained a rails runs and looked likely to win before he crashed heavily.

Gauci had a swollen wrist, bloody nose and general soreness but the consensus was he had a lucky escape as it appeared as if the galloper may have rolled on him but he managed to get out of the way.

Royal Mephisto emerged safely from the spectacular crash.

The fall of the former star jockey came just two days after Peter Mertens suffered a broken collarbone, fractured ribs, a broken ankle and a punctured lung and apprentice Jordon Childs broke both of his wrists in a fall at Hamilton.

Hughes slams 'disgraceful' Warner

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 26 November 2013 | 14.23

FORMER Australia captain Kim Hughes has launched a scathing attack on David Warner for his comments about Jonathan Trott during the first Ashes Test.

Trott stunned the cricketing world by announcing he was leaving Australia on Monday night, citing a stress-related condition.

The England camp is adamant Warner's press conference sledges on Trott, in which the South African-born batsman was described as having "scared eyes" and playing a "pretty weak" shot, had no direct relation to his decision to fly home.

But England coach Andy Flower and captain Alastair Cook made no secret of their displeasure over Warner's comments, and now Hughes has joined former international skippers such as Nasser Hussain in criticising the Aussie opener.

"For David Warner, at a news conference [to] just say that, he's weak. That is disgraceful," Hughes said.

"Irrespective of what Jonathan Trott has done now, I think it is one of the worst things I've ever heard in my whole life."

Hughes also took aim at Cricket Australia, which made no attempt to apologise for Warner's comments.

Coach Darren Lehmann even took the unusual step of effectively rubber stamping what Warner said.

"For the Australian captain not to have done anything about it, and for Cricket Australia not to have done anything about it, is deplorable," Hughes said.

Hughes, who played 70 Tests and 97 one-day internationals for Australia, also weighed into the on-field sledging debate, saying he objected to the assertion that insulting opposition players is part of the game as long as it stays on the field.

"I've had my parentage questioned, I've had my sexuality questioned, it goes on in the heat of battle," Hughes said.

"And that's part and parcel of it. I don't know why. They say it is, it shouldn't be.

"But you don't do it off the field. That's just deplorable and unacceptable in any field of endeavour."

Hughes himself dealt with similar issues to those that appear to be affecting Trott now, with the 59-year-old famously stepping down as Aussie captain in a tearful press conference on this day 29 years ago.

It's a decision Hughes says he remains completely comfortable with.

'I've moved on," he said.

"But at the end of the day I had no more petrol left in the tank to keep fighting.

"And I was becoming a person I didn't like so I thought I'll give it away, and I'm a better person for having given it away."

Mannah: A new era for Eels

Tim Mannah says the Eels are ready for a new era. Source: Sam Ruttyn / News Limited

Parramatta say they are embarking on a new era as they attempt to put two seasons of NRL misery behind them. The back-to-back wooden spooners have a new chief executive, in Scott Seward, a new coach in Brad Arthur, and a new look line-up captain Tim Mannah insists is ready to put the past behind them. On Tuesday the Eels launched their new look jerseys for the 2014, heralding a return, by popular demand, of their yellow away strip - the jersey synonymous with the Eels' first premiership in 1981.

With new signings including Will Hopoate, Corey Norman, Justin Hunt, Lee Mossop and Nathan Peats joining the Eels in 2014, Mannah says it is a chance to begin anew.

"There's a real fresh feeling around the place and everyone has a spring in their step ... there is a real buzz here," Mannah said. "It's only been a couple of weeks we have been back but we are really enjoying it.

New Eels recruit Will Hopoate. Source: News Limited

"When you have had the kind of season we just had it is nice to be able to enjoy your footy again and we are enjoying coming to training and we are enjoying looking forward to the new season." After two disjointed seasons under coaches Stephen Kearney and Ricky Stuart, Mannah said former Eels and Manly assistant Arthur has been an important addition.

"He has got everyone excited about their football and everyone is really pushing themselves," Mannah said.

"We don't want to focus on what has happened in the past.

"We are really emphasising the need to look forward and not to get caught up in what happened last season.

"It's a big year, here are lot of fresh faces here. It's a new journey for us."

A sledge too far for Pommy press

ENGLAND woke up to a Gabba horror story on Sunday, or as one newspaper described it, "slaughter at the Gabbatoir".

Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon and Stuart Broad received praise but the UK press were less forgiving with the rest of the English team.

And the Aussies are never far from a stinging criticism or two.

After the dominant 381-run win, England's media was clearly unimpressed with the manner of Australia's victory.

David Warner was Australia's leader of the chirp in Brisbane and obviously got under the skin of several English players and reporters.

Former Test player-turned commentator David "Bumble" Lloyd was most unhappy.

"We have the benefit of using a stump microphone which is not allowed to go to air and I have to say that some of the stuff that was going on there went too far," he said.

"I'm a big lad who has heard a few things in my time but David Warner in particular came out with some really nasty, horrible stuff. I would like to take him back to 1980 and listen to what he had to say to Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge and Dessie Haynes.

The Daily Mail's Lawrence Booth also expressed his concern but admitted the chat had done the job.

"(It) felt a little unnecessary, for the unvarnished truth would have hurt England more than bit of sledging: Australia, a team without a win in nine Tests, had just handed them one of their most monumental thrashings," he wrote.

"But how to sum up that state of mind now? There are broken men wherever you look - most glaringly Jonathan Trott and Matt Prior, but closely followed by Graeme Swann."

After such a big loss, often, the only thing to do it look forward.

England will head to Alice Springs for a two-day game before flying south for the second Test in Adelaide.

The Daily Telegraph's Nick Hoult suggested the tourists use their Brisbane disaster as motivation.

"It is very unusual for Cook to be so outspoken about any aspect of cricket so his comments on Warner indicated the anger which is building within the England dressing room over the antics of some of the Australian players," he said.

"It has been evident from the moment England set foot in Australia that they would face aggression from their opponents at every turn. It has come from the players on the field, taunts in media interviews and taken up by certain sections of the Australian press eager to unsettle the English, even inciting the crowd to abuse the players.

However, former England captain Geoffrey Boycott painted a bleaker picture should the team shoulder arms again and fall two-nil behind.

"There comes a point in every player's life - once you have done it at the highest level and proved you have been a top class player - that you have a bad run. And you get a bit of leeway, because everyone knows you have done it before, as opposed to a new kid who gets dropped after two games."

"(Matt) Prior's ... dismissal have been unbelievably bad. There comes a moment in time when either he gets runs or he has to go. And for me this is his last chance."

John Etheridge, writing in The Sun, said Cook "watched his team brutalised on the field and bad-mouthed off it by an Australian side hell-bent on revenge."

He added: "This was an embarrassing mismatch, men against boys, sawn-off shotguns against pea-shooters. It will take a miracle for England to win the series now."

In The Guardian, Mike selvey wrote of Johnson's redemption.

"This was a bowler a world away from the one lampooned by fans visiting this country three years ago, used sparingly by Clarke in short bursts and backed up admirably by Ryan Harris, ploughing in like a dreadnought butting through the north Atlantic, and the indefatigable banana-eater Peter Siddle," Selvey wrote.

One man who wasn't shocked by the intensity of Australia's aproach is former England great Ian Botham.

"Welcome to Australia. And guess what, there's no red carpet for you to walk on, unless it comes courtesy of blood from a cricket ball," Botham wrote in the Daily Mirror.

"There are some things that never change about coming to this country and I think the current crop have been given a brutal reminder of what it takes to be successful.

Courage and bravery are two traits that are a must here, as well as fight, skill, patience and aggression."

He described England's performance as "ordinary, verging on embarrassing" and added the inability to score more than 200 in either innings was "failure on an epic scale".

Poms feeling the heat from home

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

IF Friday was English cricket's darkest day then Saturday only served to rub salt into the wound and the UK press didn't take the Gabba pummeling lightly.

Read the View from the UK below.

Bowler battering

England's bowlers took a hammering at the Gabba on Saturday and then followed it up with another hammering in the press back home.

Graeme Swann and Chris Tremlett came in for special attention

Aside from Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson, the English bowling attack hasn't looked overly dangerous and that doesn't bode well for the remaining Tests, says The Daily Mail's Peter Hayter.

"Graeme Swann, on a pitch his opposite number Lyon had already demonstrated could help the off-spinner, and third seamer Chris Tremlett (3-69) were especially ineffective - a worrying development for England, not just here but for the four Tests stretching in front of them," he said.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"Swann, who was mockingly congratulated by his teammates when he reached his 'century' (100 runs conceded without a wicket) did eventually bowl the Australia captain and then beat Bailey's defences to become the quickest bowler, in terms of days taken, to 250 Test wickets.

The Telegraph's Nick Hoult forecast changes for the second Test in Adelaide.

"Tremlett is unlikely to be so lucky. He has bowled way below the pace who terrorised Australia in 2010-11 and confirmed the view of county watchers last season that his form had gone," he said.

While Scyld Berry praised the Aussie bowlers while back-handing his own (except for Broad).

"England's bowlers, except for Stuart Broad, have been outperformed by their Australian counterparts," he said.

Top order troubles.

After a second straight dismissal to a Mitchell Johnson bodyline attack, most of the attention was directed at Jonathan Trott.

The struggling No.3 has made just 10 and 9 in Brisbane and came in for some strong criticism.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted that Trott's effort was the worst performance he'd seen from an England No.3.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p>As bad a innings that I have ever seen from a England No 3.... <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Ashes&src=hash">#Ashes</a></p>— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) <a href="https://twitter.com/MichaelVaughan/statuses/404147741736976384">November 23, 2013</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

While Berry believed there was a deeper problem.

"His twin dismissals here have been more serious, because his decision-making has been one-track-minded. It was all too symbolic that the gloom was gathering over the Gabba when he clipped Johnson to deepish backward square-leg," he said.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Far too hot in the kitchen for Trott, didn't want to be out there! <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23ashes&src=hash">#ashes</a></p>— Tom Moody (@TomMoodyCricket) <a href="https://twitter.com/TomMoodyCricket/statuses/404146385642999808">November 23, 2013</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

However, it wasn't just Trott in the eyes of UK journalists with captain Alastair Cook coming under fire for his lack of runs.

"England have yet to satisfactorily replace Andrew Strauss at the top of the order. Michael Carberry was one of the plusses of that first innings debacle. He is not the problem. Alastair Cook is and his lack of runs is costing England, who have not posted one 400 in the last dozen innings," said the Telegraph's Kevin Garside.

Cook will have his chance to silence the doubters when play begins on day four.

Whincup wins, takes V8 lead

REIGNING V8 Supercars champ Jamie Whincup will take a 20-point lead to the season finale after winning the final race at the Sargent Security Phillip Island 360.

The Red Bull pilot headed home title rivals Mark Winterbottom and Craig Lowndes after a tense, safety car-interrupted race.

Earlier, Craig Lowndes took first blood in Sunday's twin V8 Supercars races at Phillip Island, the popular Holden pilot fought his way through from eighth on the grid, benefitting from a late-race safety car to soar past teammate Whincup to head home a Red Bull one-two.

Whincup dominated the early running after a manic start to the race.

Whincup charged into the lead at the first corner, sweeping past polesitter Fabian Coulthard, Mark Winterbottom and a fast-starting Chaz Mostert.

Winterbottom and van Gisbergen made slight contact as they turned into the first corner, the Ford pilot only just saving his Falcon from spinning.

Lowndes was the big winner in the first-turn skirmishes, arriving at Stoner Corner in third place, but he fell back down to sixth after a failed attempt to pass Mostert at MG a couple of laps later.

One-by-one Lowndes picked off his rivals until he was back in second, but five seconds behind his race-leading teammate.

Fortune smiled on him when Michael Caruso parked his Nissan at the Hayshed corner with a failed oil pump, bringing out the safety car and allowing him to mount a successful assault on Whincup.

He made the race-winning pass at Honda corner, throwing a late-dive down the inside of his teammate, who made sure Lowndes had enough room to get by.

The V8 field will now regather to prepare for the final race of the weekend at 4:25pm EDT,

Lowndes set to start alongside Saturday sparring partner Winterbottom on the front row.

PLAY has resumed after rain halted play again at the Gabba with Australia just two wickets away from victory in the first Ashes Test.

With 90 minutes left in the final session another storm hit Brisbane and it looked like the rain was setting in for good.

IF YOU'RE ON AN APPLE MOBILE DEVICE, CLICK HERE FOR THE BEST VIEWING EXPERIENCE.

But the Gabba groundstaff, led by veteran curator Kevin Mitchell Jnr, managed to get the players back on the field and give the hosts one more chance at securing victory tonight.

The rain looked to be a cruel blow for Michael Clarke's men who deserved to register a four-day victory over England.

The mother country was facing a major defeat when play resumed with the score 8-160.
