Dunaden wins Caulfield Cup

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 20 Oktober 2012 | 14.23

What a return ... Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden snares victory in the Caufield Cup. Source: News Limited

French stayer Dunaden has built on an impressive Australian record with a breathtaking Caulfield Cup victory.

Producing a sweeping run from well back in the field, Dunaden overhauled veteran stayer Alcopop to claim the $2.5 million race.

The Peter Moody-trained Lights Of Heaven finished third, just in front of Americain, also from France.

Dunaden's victory completed a reverse double of the spring carnival's feature Cups.

He won last year's Melbourne Cup but this time he did it with champion Australian jockey Craig Williams in the saddle.

Williams missed the Melbourne Cup ride because of suspension.

"This horse is just a remarkable horse," Williams said.

"We seem to have a great connection and he just lifts for me."

Dunaden is now eligible to be re-handicapped for next month's Melbourne Cup.

But stable spokesman Geoffrey Faber says it would be unfair to penalise the seven-year-old.

"He's a racehorse not an airplane ... he shouldn't get a penalty," Faber said. "Besides he didn't win by that far, did he?"

Starting at $14, Dunaden beat Alcopop ($16) by a half length with Lights Of Heaven ($11) another three quarters of a length away third.

Overseas-trained horses filled three of the first five placings with My Quest For Peace finishing just behind Americain in fifth.

Whincup wins Gold Coast V8s

Champagne showers ... Jamie Whincup celebrates victory at the Gold Coast 600. Source: News Limited

Holden's Jamie Whincup survived a day of V8 Supercars destruction on the streets of Surfers Paradise to extend his grip on the 2012 championship.

Whincup and French co-driver Sebastien Bourdais claimed victory in Saturday's opening race of the Gold Coast 600 after several competitors didn't even complete one lap of the 3.96km street circuit.

The race took three starts to get underway after multi-car crashes on the line twice brought proceedings to a spectacular halt.

In the original race start, IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe bogged Michael Caruso's No.33 Commodore, sparking a multi-car pile-up.

Ex-Formula One driver Vitantonio Liuzzi and Simon Pagenaud collided before young American driver Ricky Taylor was launched onto his roof and wound up upside-down just past the start line.

After a half-hour delay, chaos reigned again at the restart with France's Nicholas Minassian stalling and his compatriot Franck Montagny clipping him to again halt the race.

With six cars out, the race begun for a third time and, this time, got away cleanly with Bourdais pulling away from pole position.

The Frenchman handed over to Whincup and the defending champion stayed clear of trouble to take the win from a fast-finishing Jonathan Webb.

Ford driver Mark Winterbottom, who is paired with Australian IndyCar star Will Power this weekend, finished third to move back into equal-second on the championship standings.

Whincup's teammate Craig Lowndes endured a tough day, starting from 13th after missing the top 10 shootout for pole and then finishing back in sixth to dent his title bid.

Ford star Will Davison's championship bid has almost certainly come to an end however.

The Ford pilot took over from ex-Formula One pilot Mika Salo with the Finn having put their Falcon in front but less than a lap after taking over, Davison had hit a wall at turn 11.

He limped the stricken car home to the pits but finished 19th and, after a barnstorming start to the year, is all but mathematically out of the title race.

DAY 11: McIntosh, Rivers, Jacobs

DAY 10: Gumbleton, Greenwood, Young

DAY NINE: Jurrah, Brown, Warnock

DAY EIGHT: Ray, Giles, Gillies

DAY FIVE: Rodan, Murphy, Dawes

DAY FOUR: Dawes, Gumbleton, Young

DAY THREE: Moloney, Caddy, Giles

DAY TWO: Fevola, Caddy, Gilham

DAY ONE: Monfries, Lake, Tippett

CROWS SWOOP ON TIGER RUCKMAN GRAHAM
Adelaide Crows are poised to announce the signing of Richmond ruckman Angus Graham on a two-year deal as the Kurt Tippett trade with Sydney turns more bizarre. Graham's move to West Lakes - in a swap of draft picks - gives the Crows the back-up ruckman to support lead ruckman Sam Jacobs. But it also puts into question the need to take ruckman-forward Jesse White from Sydney in a trade for Tippett. Graham, 25, played just one AFL game this season as he fell behind former Crow Ivan Maric in the Tiger line-up.

POWER OFFER HITCHCOCK MORE TIME
Dangerous small forward Cameron Hitchcock is likely to play on with Port Adelaide. The 22-year-old managed just two games for the Power in 2012 as he battled hamstring issues. His manager Greg Size told the AFL website that he expected the uncontracted Hitchcock to ink a new deal in the coming weeks. "Port have said they're keen for Cameron to play on, which he's really rapt about," Size said on Thursday.

SAINTS LEAD RACE FOR HICKEY
The race for Gold Coast ruckman Tom Hickey will hot up this afternoon after the release of compensation picks, with St Kilda leading Collingwood and North Melbourne. The Suns believe only a late first-round pick will seal the deal for the Queenslander, who they say is a ready-made ruckman with 10 years of AFL ahead of him. The Saints clearly lead the race, although the Pies and North Melbourne have shown some interest.

HANSEN TURNS DOWN INTEREST TO REMAIN A ROO
Lachlan Hansen has ignored opposition overtures to re-sign with North Melbourne for the next two seasons, the AFL website reports. Hansen's future became clouded when opposition clubs, headed by Greater Western Sydney and Fremantle, reportedly tried to entice him away from Aegis Park. But North put an end to that speculation when it confirmed the No. 3 pick in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft had re-signed with the club on Friday.

LIONS EYE VERSATILE DEMON
Brisbane have turned their attention to another Melbourne player after securing former Demon Brent Moloney as a free agent. Stefan Martin could join his former teammate Moloney under Michael Voss, it has been reported. The versatile big man is contracted by Melbourne but is on the trade table. At this stage the Lions have picks eight, 23, 30 and 43 to deal with. The Dees would likely do the deal for selection No.30 or keep the 25-year-old for themselves.

GUMBY WEIGHING UP HIS OPTIONS
Essendon forward Scott Gumbleton will decide in the coming week whether he sticks with the Bombers for another season or makes a move. Western Bulldogs have put a deal to the injury-plagued forward while Melbourne and Fremantle have both been linked with him in the past fortnight. It's understood Gumbleton, who lives with Essendon skipper Jobe Watson, wants to stay in Melbourne. He is leaning towards signing with the Bombers at this stage. The Demons are more likely to acquire North Melbourne big man Cam Pedersen. Essendon unrestricted free agent David Hille is yet to commit to another one-year deal with the Dons.

EAGLE WANTS NEW HOME WITH DOGS
West Coast midfielder Koby Stevens is believed to have signalled his intention to join Western Bulldogs, the AFL website reports. The 21-year-old, who played 11 games in three seasons with the Eagles, chose the Bulldogs as his new home after considering offers from Essendon and St Kilda. The Victorian product wanted a return to his home state but a deal will still need to be done between the two clubs. Stevens was taken at No.23 in the 2009 national draft.

ANXIOUS TIME FOR FREE AGENTS
Carlton pair Bret Thornton and Jordan Russell remain clubless in the countdown to Friday's free agent deadline. The Blues will delist the pair on October 29. Thornton has met with Gold Coast Suns but, given he won't be selected before today's first free agency cut-off, he is still seen as a Carlton player. His task becomes harder after he is delisted, because every delisted player is automatically an unrestricted free agent, regardless of age. The veteran defender must vie with fellow talls such as Melbourne's first-round draft pick Lucas Cook. If the Dees delist Cook he will be chased by several clubs.

SUNS SACK FOUR PLAYERS
Twenty-five-year-old former Collingwood midfielder Sam Iles has been delisted by Gold Coast Suns. Iles was the most experienced of four players let go by the Suns on Thursday. The Suns also cut ties with Alik Magin, Lewis Moss and Piers Flanagan. Iles played seven games at the Magpies in 2006-07 and was then offered a lifeline by the Suns. Iles played 16 games in 2011 and averaged 23.8 disposals in 10 games this season.

CATS TO SQUEEZE OUT STEPHENSON
Hamish McIntosh's arrival at Geelong could force 30-year-old big man Orren Stephenson back to the VFL. The 30-year-old played eight games this year after he was the shock selection at last year's national draft. Stephenson was on just a one-year deal in 2012. The Cats have already committed to elevating rookie-listed midfielder Jesse Stringer at the national draft and currently have selection No.15 in the first round.

KANGAS READY TO SPEND BIG
Geelong recruit Hamish McIntosh has backed himself to emerge from his recurring injury nightmare and restore the Cats' midfield supremacy. Geelong cleared the path for McIntosh's arrival by giving their second-round pick (No.36) to the Kangaroos. North Melbourne will use the cleared salary cap space to front-load a number of deals with players out of contract next year. The Roos have nine players out of contract next season, including Daniel Wells, Drew Petrie and Michael Firrito, and emerging stars Jack Ziebell, Shaun Atley, Kieran Harper and Sam Wright. McIntosh's departure should free up almost $450,000. The Roos are also frontrunners to snare homesick Port Adelaide playmaker Ben Jacobs, 20.

YOUNG TO JOIN A NEW NEST
As we reported here, dashing Hawthorn wingman Clinton Young has accepted a three-year deal to join Collingwood. Young is a free agent and the Hawks will be handed a draft pick for his departure at 5pm on Friday night when the AFL reveals the compensation. Port Adelaide were also in the mix for Young but he wanted to stay in Victoria.

TIPPETT TO GET HIS WISH
And, our lead story today, is a likely end to the Kurt Tippett saga. The Crows will accept out-of-favour forward Jesse White and the Sydney's first-round draft choice for Tippett, who chose the Swans as his preferred home despite initially signaling a desire to return to Queensland.

Sixers can win without me: Watson

Big loss ... Shane Watson has been in sensational form for both Australia and the Sixers recently. Source:AAP

Sad to be leaving the Champions League T20 cricket tournament prematurely, Shane Watson is confident the unbeaten Sydney Sixers can win it without him.

Star all-rounder Watson signed off in style by taking 2-25 off four overs and smashing 47 off 38 balls in the Sixers' five-wicket win over South Africa's Highveld Lions in Cape Town on Friday morning (AEDT).

Their third victory in as many games guarantees Sydney a semi-final place and almost certainly ensures top spot in their group with one game against Mumbai Indians to come.

"For us (the Sixers) to be able to qualify for the semi-finals was certainly my goal," Watson said.

"Personally to be able to help contribute to make sure that we're in the semi-finals before I head home, it's worked out very nicely.

"It's going to be sad to leave.

"I know with the quality of group that we have, we're a real chance of winning this."

Watson will arrive home on Saturday after Cricket Australia (CA) directed his early return to rest before getting in some 'red ball' cricket in the lead-up to the first Test against South Africa in Brisbane starting on November 9.

Watson said he could play a Sydney grade game next weekend before lining up for NSW in a Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland in Brisbane the following weekend.

The sometimes injury-prone Watson said he had been talking to CA officials for about six months over his workload.

"In the end, I know having a week off will definitely freshen me up," Watson said.

Pacemen Mitchell Starc (3-19 off four), Josh Hazlewood (2-18 off 4), Watson and Moises Henriques (1-18 off 3) were all instrumental in pulling the Highveld Lions' run rate back in Cape Town.

They belted 25 off the first two overs and were well placed at 2-77 at the halfway point of their innings.

Apart from opener Gulam Bodi (61 off 44), no one made more than 23 and no partnership gleaned more than 32.

Man of the match Starc picked up his third three-wicket haul in as many games.

Watson said Starc was doing everything possible to give himself a chance to be in the Australia team for the first Test.

"Mitchell had an awesome T20 World Cup and he's continued to follow it on here," Watson said.

"There is no doubt that having a left-armer who bowls 140 km/h, who swings the ball back in with a bit of bounce at the Gabba and in Perth, will certainly be a huge asset for our team."

Watson also praised in-form Sixers' captain and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, who is battling to regain his Test spot from incumbent Matthew Wade.

Haddin, who scored a Shield century against Tasmania last month, followed his 41 off 21 balls against Yorkshire with 32 off 21, hitting three successive sixes in one over.

"I think he's in some serious touch at the moment and, as he always does, he keeps (wicket) very well," Watson said.

Thrill ride ... international stars treated to some local hospitality ahead of the Gold Coast 600. Source: Jerad Williams / News Limited

A stack of international drivers have descended on Australia to mixing it up with our local V8 Supercar heroes at Surfers Paradise this weekend.

Here at SPEED, we thought we would help out by giving you the rundown on who's who of the co-drivers at V8 Supercars' Armor All Gold Coast 600.

This way, if your friends ask if Jeroen Bleekemolen is the latest marquee player to be signed to the A-League, or why the French guy from 'Talladega Nights' is racing this weekend, you can dazzle them with your knowledge!

Sebastien Bourdais Source: News Limited

TeamVodafone

No.1 – Sebastien Bourdais
Age: 33
Nationality: French
Best known for: Four Champ Car titles, constant adversary of Paul Tracy
V8 experience: 2x Gold Coast events

Born in Le Mans, how could Bourdais be anything else but a racecar driver. The man to beat in Champ Car, his four-title streak also included a pair of wins on the Gold Coast streets. He backed it up again with a win last year with Jamie Whincup. Nothing's changed this year, so there's no reason to expect them to be capable of anything less than another win.

Richard Lyons Source: Supplied

No.888 – Richard Lyons
Age: 33
Nationality: Northern Irish
Best known for: GC600 Sunday race winner last year, 2004 All-Japan GT500 Champion, occasional Bathurst co-driver
V8 experience: 3x Bathursts, 1x Gold Coast event

Lyons has more experience than most of the international co-drivers, and was the winner on Sunday last year after getting a last minute call-up to replace the injured Will Power at FPR. Now crossing the floor to join Lowndes, he is once again in a fast car with a fast driver. Another potential winner.

Ford Performance Racing

No.5 – Will Power
Age: 31
Nationality: Australian
Best known for: Toowoomba's Penske-driving IndyCar star
V8 experience: 1x Bathurst, 1x Gold Coast event

A constant threat for the IndyCar title, Power comes off another big disappointment this year despite being the fastest driver in the series. Has enough V8 experience to be able to punt one of these cars around quickly. Will be wanting to finally post a 'home' win after numerous disappointments in the past.

Mika Salo Source: News Limited

No.6 – Mika Salo
Age: 45
Nationality: Finnish
Best known for: Ferrari's replacement for injured Michael Schumacher in 1999
V8 experience: 2x Gold Coast events

Best known as the 'other' Flying Finn in F1 through the turn of the millennium, since his departure from the sport's top-flight he has established himself as a very fast sportscar driver. Showed last year that his tin-top experience held him in good stead in one of our big, brutish V8s, he and Will Davison were fastest at Wednesday's test day. Definitely a contender.

Nick Heidfeld Source: News Limited

No.55 – Nick Heidfeld
Age: 35
Nationality: German
Best known for: The other fast German in F1.
V8 experience: Nil

With an extensive F1 career, Heidfeld never quite hit the heights of his German contemporaries, Schumacher, Frentzen and Vettel. Nonetheless he is a very quick driver and very highly rated by FPR after Wednesday's test day. Despite his V8 rookie status, is with a team that is fast at Surfers and has shown pace all year, he is a contender for the win this weekend.

Ryan Briscoe Source: News Limited

Holden Racing Team

No.2 – Ryan Briscoe
Age: 31
Nationality: Australian
Best known for: Australia's other Penske-driving IndyCar star
V8 experience: 2x Bathursts, 2x Gold Coast events

A wild child on the track in his early days, Briscoe harnessed his boundless talent after he was cast aside by Chip Ganassi and Toyota after a crash-prone IndyCar season in 2005. Bounced back to become a championship contender for Penske three years later, and is fast in a V8 Supercar: he was fastest in his first V8 Supercar qualifying session at the Sandown 500 in 2006.

No.22 – Darren Turner
Age: 38
Nationality: English
Best known for: Double-Le Mans 24 Hours class winner for Aston Martin
V8 experience: 1x Gold Coast event

Turner did a fantastic job in difficult circumstances for HRT last year, coming in at the last minute to replace the late Dan Wheldon. Has an extensive background in GT and touring cars, and also raced in the DTM for a couple of years. A smart, fast driver who will surely be able to do a solid job in the No.22 car again this year.

No.66 – Peter Dumbreck
Age: 39
Nationality: Scottish
Best known for: Backflipping a Mercedes sportscar into the forest at Le Mans in 1999 at high speed and living to tell the tale.
V8 experience: Nil

There is more to Dumbreck than his aerobatic misadventure in north-western France over a decade ago. An accomplished DTM, Japanese Super GT and sportscar racer, he has plenty of big horsepower, rear-wheel-drive experience.

Stone Brothers Racing

No.4 – Simon Pagenaud
Age: 28
Nationality: French
Best known for: Very fast sportscar and IndyCar pilot / dead-on Jean Girard impression
V8 experience: 1x Gold Coast event

Don't let his 'Jean Girard' looks and accent fool you, Simon Pagenaud is no joker behind the wheel. He finally got back into an IndyCar this season after showing plenty of promise in lower categories, sportscars, and his lone year as Will Power's teammate in the final year of Champ Car. Very highly-rated by a lot of people who should know.

No.9 – Jeroen Bleekemolen
Age: 30
Nationality: Dutch
Best known for: The Netherlands representative in A1GP, factory Porsche driver
V8 experience: Nil
This combination has possibly the best combination of names in the paddock, and are also contenders. Bleekemolen is a very capable driver with plenty of GT experience with drives in Europe and America. Also a winner in the notoriously hotly-contested Porsche Supercup.

David Brabham Source: News Limited

No.47 – David Brabham
Age: 47
Nationality: Australian
Best known for: having a racing resume as long as the Q1 tower is tall
V8 experience: 8x Bathursts, 1x Gold Coast event

There's far much more to say about Brabs and his decorated career that will fit into just a few lines. He has continued his father's legacy in the sport well, with a win in the coveted British F3 championship, countless sportscar wins including a Le Mans triumph, and a Bathurst win in 1997 with brother Geoff. Has most V8 experience of any co-driver.

Ricky Taylor Source: News Limited

Garry Rogers Motorsport

No.33 – Ricky Taylor
Age: 23
Nationality: American (British-born)
Best known for: Grand-Am Sportscar Series star
V8 experience: Nil

Has one of the lowest Australian profiles of any of the international co-drivers, but don't let that deceive you. Taylor is one of the fastest drivers in Grand-Am, setting several pole positions in the last couple of years against a good quality field. Didn't have the best year championship-wise and will be looking to do well here. Could be the sleeper in the pack.

James Hinchcliffe Source: News Limited

No.34 – James Hinchcliffe
Age: 25
Nationality: Canadian
Best known for: IndyCar racer / Danica Patrick's replacement / 'Manica' Go Daddy ads
V8 experience: Nil

The latest in a long line of fast Canadians, Hinchcliffe has had an up and down career that is very much on an upward swing at the moment with a deal to race IndyCars for Andretti Autosport. After a strong early start to his year it tailed off towards the end. Will be looking to enjoy his time on the Gold Coast and is with a team and driver that can finish in the top five at least.

Stephane Sarrazin Source: Supplied

Brad Jones Racing

No.8 – Stephane Sarrazin
Age: 36
Nationality: French
Best known for: Fearlessly fast sportscar driver / rally driver for Subaru
V8 experience: 1x Gold Coast event

A rarity in this day and age, Sarrazin has proven himself to be fast across a couple of racing disciplines. A winner in Formula 3000, he has also notched up several podiums at the Le Mans 24 Hours, and has also finished in the top-three at the Monte Carlo Rally. Was good enough to be hired by the Subaru World Rally Team, and was Peugeot's go-to man for qualifying at Le Mans at the height of their prototype wars with Audi.

Nicolas Minassian Source: Supplied

No.14 – Nicolas Minassian
Age: 39
Nationality: French
Best known for: Peugeot sportscar racer
V8 experience: 1x Sandown 500, 1x Bathurst
The Frenchman has led a wide and varied career since slipping off the open-wheel ladder. Dumped by Chip Ganassi mid-way through a crash-filled CART year in 2001, he won a NASCAR-style series in Britain, raced for Team Dynamik at the V8 Supercar enduros in 2003, before establishing himself as one of Peugeot's stable of sportscar drivers alongside Sarrazin.

Jamie Campbell-Walter Source: Supplied

No.21 – Jamie Campbell-Walter
Age: 39
Nationality: British
Best known for: Long-time GT and sportscar driver
V8 experience: Nil

Establishing himself as a GT driver in the late '90s, Campbell-Walter is probably best remembered for being the lead driver in the fearsome-looking Lister Storm, taking out the FIA GT Championship in 2000. He dabbled in prototypes for a while, before landing a plum drive with Nissan in the GT1 championship for the last couple of years. Extensive GT experience should be very handy as he gets his head around our V8s.

Gianni Morbidelli Source: News Limited

Dick Johnson Racing

No.12 – Gianni Morbidelli
Age: 44
Nationality: Italian
Best known for: Extensive F1 career in 1990s, including one-off Ferrari drive in 1991.
V8 experience: 2x Gold Coast events

Now in the twilight of his career, Morbidelli has been racing touring cars since leaving F1 after 1997. Races in the International Superstars series in an Audi RS5, posting a pair of wins at Spa-Francorchamps in July. He didn't exactly cover himself in glory at Surfers last year with a bone-headed move that took out Jason Bright, and will be hoping to redress this weekend.

No.17 – Max Papis
Age: 43
Nationality: Italian
Best known for: Being 'Mad Max' Papis, IndyCar racer through late '90s/early 2000s
V8 experience: Nil

A former CART and sportscar star, Papis has spent the last few years trying to carve out a NASCAR career. That recent experience should hold him in good stead when it comes to trying to work out how to get the best out of a V8 Supercar around the tight Surfers Paradise street circuit.

No.18 – Peter Kox
Age: 48
Nationality: Dutch
Best known for: Touring car and sports car racer
V8 experience: Nil

Has one of the longest careers of any of the co-drivers, Kox came up through the junior open-wheel categories before his career stalled before reaching F1. Turning to sportscars and touring cars, he has notched up wins in the BTCC as well as a class win at Le Mans, among works drives for BMW and Aston Martin.

Boris Said Source: News Limited

No.49 – Boris Said
Age: 50
Nationality: American
Best known for: Extensive Trans-Am and GT experience / NASCAR road course 'ringer' / luscious hair
V8 experience: 1x Bathurst, 1x Gold Coast event

Never far from controversy, it was Said who famously called out Greg Biffle after a NASCAR crash at Watkins Glen last year: "He is the most unprofessional little scaredy cat I've ever seen in my life, he won't even fight me like a man. So if someone texts me his address, I'll go see him Wednesday at his house and show him what he really needs. He needs a friggin' whooping, and I'm going to give it to him."

Lesson: don't mess with Boris Said.

Kelly Racing

No.7 – Marco Andretti
Age: 25
Nationality: American
Best known for: The next generation in a proud American racing dynasty.
V8 experience: Nil

Grandson of Mario and son of Michael, Marco has yet to show the promise he displayed in the early years of his IndyCar career. Speed lives in the Andretti genes, but so does the famous 'Andretti curse' which has prevented the family from returning to the winners' circle at the Indy 500 since Mario's lone win in 1969. Will be hoping the black cloud doesn't follow him to Surfers.

No.11 – Franck Montagny
Age: 34
Nationality: French
Best known for: Renowned sports car racer, raced in F1 for Super Aguri.
V8 experience: Nil

Now one of France's top sportscar drivers, Montagny never quite hit the open-wheel heights he was chasing. Very experienced and very fast, it will be interesting to see how his vast experience translates to our unique V8 racecars.

Graham Rahal Source: Supplied

No.15 – Graham Rahal
Age: 23
Nationality: American
Best known for: The next generation in a proud American racing dynasty.
V8 experience: Nil

Rahal has shown he has both his dad's speed behind the wheel and his business acumen. After losing his IndyCar drive, he spent months knocking on doors and making presentations to sponsors to get back into the cockpit. After a lot of hard work, he found some. Marketable and professional, he's a fine example to any young driver looking to make their way forward in the sport.

Justin Wilson Source: Supplied

No.51 – Justin Wilson
Age: 34
Nationality: British
Best known for: Mark Webber's Jaguar F1 teammate / IndyCar racer / 1.93m height
V8 experience: Nil

Wilson is perhaps the highest-rated IndyCar driver in the series who isn't in a top drive. This is the man that brought long-time minnow team Dale Coyne Racing their first win. A demon on a road course, but watch for issues with the driver change and seat position: while Murphy isn't exactly short, Wilson most definitely isn't.

Marc Lieb Source: News Limited

Tekno Autosports

No.19 – Marc Lieb
Age: 32
Nationality: German
Best known for: Porsche factory sportscar driver
V8 experience: 1x Gold Coast event

Fact: Porsche don't hire mugs to be their factory drivers. Fact: Lieb is a Porsche factory driver. Fresh off a class win at Fuji last weekend, the German returns to Surfers after racing with SBR last year. Will be wanting to have improved his standing-start technique after struggling away from the line on the Saturday last year.

No.91 – Lucas di Grassi
Age: 28
Nationality: Brazilian
Best known for: F1 driver for Virgin in 2010, Pirelli's F1 test driver 2011/12, F3 Macau Grand Prix winner in 2005.
V8 experience: Nil

Di Grassi is another racer whose career stalled at the final hurdle, and couldn't quite make the jump up the grid from F1's minnows. Instead snagged a testing contract with Pirelli, F1's tyre suppliers for the last two years. Was supposed to race here last year, but was replaced at the last minute by Gil de Ferran.

Vitantonio Liuzzi Source: News Limited

Tony D'Alberto Racing

No.3 – Vitantonio Liuzzi
Age: 31
Nationality: Italian
Best known for: F1 racer for Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Force India and HRT / last F3000 champion
V8 experience: 1x Gold Coast event

The nearly-man who never quite fulfilled his lower-category promise when he reached F1, Liuzzi is nonetheless a very quick driver. Showed form on debut last year, and will only be faster now after a year of racing in the International Superstars series – the closest thing Europe has to V8 Supercars. The TDR Falcon has also been on the pace of the three factory FPR cars on the bumpier tracks this year.

Mike Conway Source: Supplied

Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport

No.30 – Mike Conway
Age: 29
Nationality: British
Best known for: Two massive Indy 500 crashes, one of which took Will Power out in 2012.
V8 experience: Nil

Forsaking Europe to try his hand at American open wheelers, he broke into the IndyCar Series in 2010. But then he missed most of the year after a violent crash on the last lap of the Indy 500. Bouncing back with a seat at Andretti Autosport in 2011, he won at Long Beach, before losing the ride at the end of the year. A building year at AJ Foyt's team this year came to an end when he decided to quit racing on ovals for good. His drive this weekend will be his first in a tin-top.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has ruled out imposing team orders forcing Mark Webber to support Sebastian Vettel's World Championship bid.

Vettel currently leads the standings after leapfrogging Ferrari's Fernando Alonso courtesy of his victory in Sunday's Korean GP. After losing position to his team-mate into the first corner, Webber followed Vettel across the line and now trails the reigning champion by 63 points in the Drivers' Championship.

However, despite own Webber's title hopes being effectively over, and Alonso remaining within six points of Vettel, Horner insists the Australian will remain free to race his team-mate in the final four races of the year.

"Sebastian has moved into the lead and Mark still has a chance of winning this championship," Horner said.

"I think it would be wrong to impose team orders while Mark still mathematically has a chance of winning. They demonstrated in Korea they race each other fairly, and that is all we ask of them."

Ouch ... A high school soccer player in Utah, viciously knees her opponent in the head. Source:FOX SPORTS

Now to the most dangerous of world sports: high school girls soccer.

At least that's how they play it in Utah, where one of the worst cheap shots off the ball you'll ever see was captured on camera.

In a shocking display of on-field violence, one player goes to ground after contesting a ball and her opponent takes the opportunity to run through her, driving a knee up into the unsuspecting girl's face. See the video above.

DAY TWO: Fevola, Caddy, Gilham

ESSENDON EXPECT GUMBY TO SIGN
Essendon expect Scott Gumbleton to sign a new deal this week and remain with the Bombers despite interest from a number of clubs. Western Bulldogs, Fremantle and Melbourne have enquired about Gumbleton. While a contract hasn't been signed yet, Essendon are confident a commitment from Gumbleton isn't far away. The Bombers also expire David Hille will sign a deal that is currently before him.

BOMBERS HAVE INTEREST IN EAGLE
Essendon are interested in luring Victorian-raised midfielder Koby Stevens from West Coast but not at the current asking price. The Bombers have discussed Stevens with the Eagles but, to this point, haven't been able to broker a deal. The Eagles must construct a trade for the 21-year-old in the trade window or risk losing the talented on-baller for nothing in the draft. The Bombers, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs are said to be looking at Stevens. The Bombers, meanwhile, have ruled out bringing in Hawthorn wingman Clinton Young due to a lack of room in the salary cap.

PLENTY STILL ON MELBOURNE RADAR
Melbourne have not closed the door on attracting Essendon forward Scott Gumbleton. The Demons have added Chris Dawes in their active off-season. The Dawes deal means Melbourne have only pick No.4 in the first 50 selections in the national draft. But more kids aren't the aim for Mark Neeld. "We think we've got enough kids," Neeld said. Neeld said that the Dees remained interested in North Melbourne's Cameron Pedersen and Gumbleton, although it was unlikely they'll have space for both players.

DEMONS NOT DONE WITH YET
Melbourne have been one of the most active players so far in the trade window and still have work to do, says list manager Tim Harrington. The Demons have brought in Shannon Byrnes, Chris Dawes and traded for boom 17-year-old Jesse Hogan. The Demons are waiting on a decision from veteran Jared Rivers, who is being courted by Geelong, but haven't given up on keeping the NAB Rising Star winner. North Melbourne utility Cameron Pedersen and St Kilda midfielder Farren Ray remain on the Melbourne radar. Ray, however, is said to be leaning towards sticking with the Saints.

MAGPIES UNLIKELY TO LAND YOUNG
Collingwood have all but ruled out luring Hawthorn running machine Clinton Young. Young, 26, was linked with the Magpies as well as Brisbane Lions, Essendon and Port Adelaide. But Magpies football director Geoff Walsh said Collingwood were probably done for the trade period. Collingwood and Melbourne reached an agreement which sees struggling forward Chris Dawes become a Demon. In return, the Magpies, who had picks No.17 and No.18, also snared pick No.20 and No.45 for the November 22 draft. Collingwood parted with Pick.58. "I think we're pretty much done and dusted," Walsh told SEN. "We'll be happy to go to the draft with three selections in the top group, so we're pretty satisfied."

LEVI WON'T BE LEAVING: KANGAS
Forgotten North Melbourne midfielder Levi Greenwood is still wanted by the Kangaroos. North Melbourne football manager Donald McDonald told the club's website that the stocky 23-year-old wanted to make amends for a disappointing 2012 campaign. And the Kangaroos are keen for him to do that at Arden Street. The South Australian had been linked with a return to his home state but that's not on the cards. "Very much," McDonald said when asked if Greenwood was still wanted by coach Brad Scott. "He's the first to admit he had a disappointing season and will do everything to improve."

POWER, KANGAS READY TO TALK
North Melbourne goalsneak Matt Campbell could be a part of Port Adelaide's compensation for promising defender Ben Jacobs. With North hopeful of luring Jacobs to Arden Street, Campbell looms as a likely candidate to return to South Australia after he was put on the trade table by the Kangaroos. After delisting David Rodan and Simon Phillips last week, Port are left with just one - injury-prone Cameron Hitchcock - genuine small forward on their senior list. Campbell, who has played 82 AFL matches since being rookie-listed in 2006, would not only add valuable goalscoring ability for the Power but also great leg speed.

TIPPETT NOT KEEN ON GWS TALKS
Kurt Tippett remains in control of his plan to be a Sydney Swan by declaring he will not join Greater Western Sydney, reports Michelangelo Rucci. The Adelaide Advertiser scribe says as much as Adelaide can get a better deal from the Giants than Sydney, Tippett has the right to veto any trade the Crows conjure before next Friday's deadline. The Giants have declared that they are willing to offer Tippett his much-wanted lifestyle change to Sydney by offering to hand Adelaide anything but their No.1 draft pick for the 25-year-old Queenslander. Greater Western Sydney's early draft picks are far more tempting to the Crows than Sydney's offers of a second-round draft pick or out-of-favour ruckman-forward Jesse White. But they are a wasted offer while Tippett remains steadfast on becoming a Swan. Tippett's Brisbane-based manager Peter Blucher questioned GWS's interest in Tippett. "We've had no contact from the Giants ... and it doesn't matter because Kurt has chosen to be with the Sydney Swans," he said. "I remain supremely confident a deal will be done. The Adelaide and Sydney football clubs are two good groups - they will work it out."

Nikolic ban appeal fails

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 16 Oktober 2012 | 14.23

Jockey ... Danny Nikolic's ban will stand, for now, after a Victorian court threw out his appeal. Source: Mark Evans / News Limited

Disqualified jockey Danny Nikolic has failed in his bid to win a stay of proceedings against a two-year ban imposed earlier this month for threatening Victoria's chief racing steward.

Nikolic had asked the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal (VCAT) to lift the disqualification and allow him to ride at the Melbourne spring racing carnival pending his appeal against the earlier verdict.

But VCAT vice-president, Judge Michael Macnamara said the community interest required him to reject Nikolic's application.

"Clearly there is a public interest in the stewards being in control of racing,'' Judge Macnamara said.

He said public confidence in racing needed to be maintained and that stewards shouldn't be intimidated.

An earlier hearing before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board accepted the evidence of chief steward Terry Bailey that Nikolic had abused him and had threatened him at a race meeting at Seymour on September 4.

The hearing heard Nikolic had approached Bailey and said: "We all have families ... and we know where yours lives."

Nikolic maintained it had been Bailey who had threatened him, saying he would f&#nbsp;&#nbsp;&#nbsp; his career.

Nikolic wanted Judge Macnamara to lift the ban until VCAT hears his appeal.

Through his lawyer John Digby, QC, Nikolic claimed the financial consequences of missing the spring carnival should be taken into account, as should the loss of goodwill and standing he would suffer by foregoing regular mounts.

Digby said if Nikolic was ultimately cleared of the charges he would have suffered "irremediable damage''.

But Judge Macnamara said Bailey's version of events had "a degree of plausibility''.

"There seems to have been something going on between Mr Nikolic and Mr Bailey,'' he said.

He said tension and antagonism existed between them that was supported by the undisputed evidence that Nikolic had placed his feet on the table in the stewards room at Seymour when being questioned of the day of the alleged events.

The judge described that as "an extraordinary thing for a jockey to do''.

His proposal of a full appeal hearing next week was rejected by Nikolic and his legal team. The appeal will be heard on November 7 and 8.

Respect ... MotoGP riders will honour the late Marco Simoncelli in Malaysia this week. Source: Raymond Ho / News Limited

MotoGP riders will gather at Malaysia's Sepang circuit this week for the installation of a plaque in memory of Italian rider Marco Simoncelli, who died in a crash last October, a top official said on Tuesday.

Razlan Razali, Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive, said riders and team officials would gather at turn 11 on Thursday where the young racer lost control of his bike.

"A bronze plaque will be installed at turn 11 in remembrance of Simoncelli,'' he said.

The tragic incident occurred soon after the 2011 race began when the 24-year-old Honda rider's bike veered across the track and into the path of riders Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi, who appeared to have hit him.

Simoncelli, considered an up-and-coming MotoGP star, had his helmet knocked off in the collision.
Razlan also said a new "Marco Simoncelli rookie of the year'' trophy in memory of the flamboyant 2008 Moto2 world champion would be unveiled on Saturday.

SIC will award the trophy to the best rookie in the MotoGP class at the season-ending race in Valencia on November 11. Any rookie rider with the most number of points wins the trophy.

Sepang is to host the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday in round 16 of the 18-race MotoGP Championship.

Season launch ... Michael Clarke says Australia is ready for a big summer of cricket. Source: Phil Hillyard / News Limited

Captain Michael Clarke says Australian cricket faces the most testing year in its celebrated history as his side tries to reclaim both the No.1 Test ranking and the Ashes.

At the official launch of the Australian summer of cricket in Sydney on Monday, Clarke said his rejuvenated side was intent on doing all it could to restore Australia to the top of world cricket's totem pole over the coming year.

"It's a really exciting 12-15 months, as big a time that I will have in my career,'' Clarke said.

"We have all been working very hard and it is something we are all really looking forward to.

"I can guarantee you it certainly won't be lack of work ethic that lets the Australian cricket team down.''

Australia start their summer with a three-Test series against world No.1 South Africa in Brisbane on November 9, followed by a three-Test series against Sri Lanka at home.

After limited-overs series against World T20 champions the West Indies, Australia travel to play four Tests in India before going to England as they attempt to win back the Ashes.

That series is followed by an unprecedented return five-Test series against England next summer.

But Clarke said the Proteas are his side's priority at the moment.

"We have some really tough opposition in South Africa, the No.1 side in Test cricket, coming to Australia very soon and our main focus is on that.''

RAY TO REMAIN AT SAINTS
Farren Ray could continue at St Kilda next season despite languishing in the VFL this year and fielding interest from aggressive trade player Melbourne.
The dashing wingman floated in and out of new coach Scott Watters' side this year, finishing with just 11 games, but remains contracted at Seaford in 2013.
Ray's manager Marty Pask said as it stood "at the moment", Ray was expected to stay a Saint.
The former No. 4 draft pick was traded to St Kilda at the end of the 2008 season after falling out of the best 22 at the Western Bulldogs.
A quiet qualifying final sealed Ray's fate under then-Dogs coach Rodney Eade, but he rebounded strongly under Ross Lyon, adding a harder edge to his game.
Ray, 26, played 50 of a possible 51 games in 2009-10, including all three grand finals.

SUNS SLAM DOOR ON TIPPETT
The door has been slammed shut on Kurt Tippett at Gold Coast Suns after they dismissed the notion of snapping up the defecting Adelaide Crows forward if talks with Sydney Swans broke down. Tippett will be forced to nominate for the draft pool if he is not traded by the October 26 deadline - and with the No.2 pre-season pick, the Suns would be in a prime position to nab the Queenslander. However, Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft said they had "moved on" since receiving the shock news that Tippett wanted to move to Sydney rather than returning to his home state Queensland. Read the full story here.

SUNS SIGN LOCAL LAD
Gold Coast have tapped into their zone recruiting allowances to snare a key-position talent capable of performing at both ends of the ground. The Suns signed Clay Cameron, a highly-rated athlete. Cameron, who won a rising star nomination playing for NEAFL club Mt Gravatt in 2011, battled osteitis pubis in 2010 - delaying his start in the big time. To make room, Gold Coast could offload ruckman Tom Hickey and powerful defender Josh Toy this trade period. Hickey wants to move to St Kilda to be closer to his girlfriend, while Essendon-raised Toy has a one-year offer on the table from the Suns but has met with three Melbourne clubs.

GIANTS SET TO GET BRET
Carlton free agent Bret Thornton is likely to add some experience and size to the young Greater Western Sydney list. The Giants have met with the 28-year-old after he told the Blues at the end of 2012 that he would seek a new club. The Giants could use the 188-game veteran to shore up their defence or swing him forward to ease the burden on young gun Jeremy Cameron. Thornton's former Carlton teammate Jordan Russell is also on the hunt for a fresh start but a move to Port Adelaide fell through last week.

RODAN AND TIGERS COULD REUNITE
Sacked Port Adelaide midfielder David Rodan is hopeful he can extend his AFL career with a return to his first club, Richmond, a possibility. Rodan told SEN that his manager had met with a number of interested clubs since the Power delisted Rodan last week. The Tigers are one club who have enquired about Rodan, who has played 176 games since debuting in 2002. "There has been a few clubs contact me, which is encouraging," Rodan said. "I still feel like I've got a fair bit left ... obviously hoping that the clubs out there will still want me." Asked whether Richmond was one of those clubs, Rodan said: "There has been a bit of talk, but it's still very early and we've still got a few days, another week, until we finish up talks. "But the great thing is I've obviously got a few clubs hopefully wanting me to get on their lists." The 29-year-old played 65 games for Richmond from 2002-06 before the Tigers delisted him and went on to play 111 games for the Power.

NOT EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE MARTIN
Versatile Melbourne big man Stefan Martin isn't attracting a lot of interest at the trade table. The athletic Martin, 25, has one year remaining on his contract at the Dees. He is open to a move elsewhere after 57 games in five seasons. He managed just seven games in 2012, Mark Neeld's first season as coach. Martin could be used in a deal with St Kilda for midfielder Farren Ray, who the Demons are keen to acquire.

GIANTS KEEP THEIR BIG MAN
After weeks of speculation, Greater Western Sydney ruckman Jonathan Giles has signed a new three-year deal to stay at the Giants. The 24-year-old shouldered the ruck load for the Giants in 2012 but was being courted by a number of clubs, including Adelaide. However, the former Port Adelaide-listed player resisted the temptation of returning to his home state and inked a three-year contract.

CATS LOOKING FOR NEW HOME
As Geelong try to finalise deals for North Melbourne ruckman Hamish McIntosh and veteran Demon Jared Rivers, there are two youngsters on the verge of exiting the club. Tom Gillies, who almost joined Hawthorn 12 months ago, is looking to advance his career elsewhere. Injury-plagued key forward Mitch Brown is doing likewise. Their places on the Geelong list are likely to be filled by McIntosh and Rivers. The Kangaroos and Cats are likely to try and thrash out a McIntosh deal on Monday.

Colosimo red card hampers Heart

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 14 Oktober 2012 | 14.23

Seeing red ... Heart's Simon Colosimo sent off for a deliberate handball. Source: George Salpigtidis / News Limited

Wellington Phoenix is without doubt the A-League's unsung hero factory.

Understrength, but never overwhelmed, the Phoenix churned out another against-the-odds performance for a gritty 1-1 draw against 10-man Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park on Sunday to stay unbeaten this season.

Minus seven players and their coach on international duty and with a team sheet of debutants and no-names, the Phoenix confounded predictions they would be hammered by the in-form Heart.

But Wellington's cause was greatly enhanced by the Heart being reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Simon Colosimo was sent off for deliberately handballing a goalbound shot.

P W D L GD Pts
1 Adelaide 2 2 0 0 3 6
2 Wellington 2 1 1 0 2 4
3 Heart 2 1 1 0 1 4
4 Brisbane 2 1 0 1 4 3
5 Perth 1 1 0 0 1 3
6 Newcastle 2 1 0 1 -1 3
7 Central Coast 1 0 1 0 0 1
8 Western Sydney 2 0 1 1 -1 1
9 Sydney 2 0 0 2 -3 0
10 Victory 2 0 0 2 -6 0

Trailing 1-0 at the time after the Heart had the better chances throughout the first half, Paul Ifill banged home the resulting penalty to level the scores.

Then they withstood the Heart, and created several more chances of their own, to ensure a deserved share of the points.

The Heart looked on track to add to their opening week win in the first half, taking a 20th minute lead through a superb Matt Thompson goal.

Fullback Aziz Behich won a ball deep in defence, ran 70m and crossed to midfielder Fred, who laid the ball back for Thompson to drive home.

But the Heart were made to pay for squandering several good chances when Colosimo illegally played goalkeeper to push Alex Smith's certain goal over the bar.

Colosimo's send-off altered the game markedly.

The Phoenix - with wingers Louis Fenton and Ifill prominent - then took command and stretched the Heart.

They came closest to a second when Ifill was put through on goal, but lofted a good chance over.

Re-live all the action from the match at AAMI Park at our A-League Match Centre, with all the stats you'll ever need.

Then defender Michael Boxall turned Phoenix's hero, clearing a Dylan Macallister chance off the line with 13 minutes left - the Heart's best chance of a winner.

It was yet another addition to the perennial finalists' long history of confounding A-League expectations.

Both the Phoenix and Heart have a win and a draw from their opening two matches of the season.

Pedrosa stuns Lorenzo in Japan

Crucial victory ... Pedrosa has cut Lorenzo's championship lead to 28 points. Source: AP

Dani Pedrosa battled from behind to beat championship leader Jorge Lorenzo at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, stepping up his bid to overtake his fellow Spaniard for his first MotoGP title.

And in further good news for Honda, teammate Casey Stoner retained third place in the standings after finishing fifth.

Stoner missed three races through injury and has no chance of winning the championship but he remains five points ahead of Yamaha's Andrea Dovizioso who finished one place ahead of him on Sunday.

Pedrosa passed pole-sitter and Yamaha ace Lorenzo on the 12th of 24 laps and won by more than four seconds at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit.

Third was Alvaro Bautista on another Honda 2.477 seconds further back.

With his four wins in the past five races, Pedrosa has closed the gap to Lorenzo to 28 points with three races remaining in the season.

"It was a hard race because from the beginning the pace was very fast," said Pedrosa, 27.

"At the beginning, I tried to understand the bike because yesterday it had some chatter (vibration after braking).

"There was one moment I could get right with a right-hand corner so I could pass him and finally I tried to pull some good laps," he said.

"I suffered quite a lot of chattering during the race but I could manage."

The hardluck story on Sunday was Cal Crutchlow, whose Yamaha expired on the last lap as he was set to claim third place.

The Grand Prix tour will stop in Malaysia and Australia in the next two weeks with the finale to thrill Spanish fans at Valencia on November 11.
