AN inspired Melbourne at upset a wayward Richmond at the MCG.

Paul Roos' men punished the Tigers pathetic kicking for goal to clinch their third win for the season, 14.7 (91) to 9.20 (74).

Demons captain Nathan Jones led the way with 33 possessions while Jack Watts kicked three goals, including the sealer in the fourth quarter.

Dustin Martin was the Tigers best with 31 touches but Shaun Grigg (0.3), Shane Edwards (2.2), Jack Riewoldt (1.3) and Ben Griffiths (0.3) butchered the ball in front of the big sticks.

Aussie women's sevens bid on track

THE Australian team's tilt at the women's world sevens rugby crown is on track after three wins out of three in the pool stage to progress to the quarter-finals at the Amsterdam series.

Australia qualified as top seeds from the opening day of the final round of 2013/14 with three strong displays against France, South Africa and Russia to set up a tie with Brazil on Saturday night (8pm AEST).

The winner will play Canada or the United States in the cup semi-finals.

Captain Sharni Williams, arguably the player of the day, led from the front continually to provide the platform for Australia's exciting backline to deliver.

"Obviously, our aim was to win three out of three in the pool stages, but we all know that (Saturday) will be the hardest day. We've still got a lot to work to do as there were a few missed tackles in that final game which I'm sure we'll review.

"It was a tough day. We didn't know how South Africa would go and they came out pretty strong and physical. Against Russia, we had to keep ball in hand and we managed to do that. It can be hard not to think of the second day but you've got to get the first part of the job done first.

"The weather's been pretty good, it feels like we're back home and the dry conditions suit our game."

Tim Walsh's side began its campaign with a convincing 24-5 win over France, then South Africa were unable to cope with Williams' and Shannon Parry's dominance at the breakdown and lost 29-7.

In the toughest pool game, the Aussies outscored Russia six tries to one in a 36-5 romp.

New Zealand qualified as second seeds and will face Russia in the quarter-finals. In the other last-eight clash, England — also unbeaten — play France.

Australia realistically needs to finish two places or above its trans-Tasman rival in Amsterdam to secure a first IRB Sevens World Series crown.

Katich may return to furnace

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 16 Mei 2014 | 14.23

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

SIMON Katich is still deciding whether to temporarily swap his pink GWS Giants runners outfit for the Big Bash orange of the Perth Scorchers.

The former Test opening batsman now covers up to 20 kilometres a week delivering coach's messages to the young Giants as part of his full time role as a leadership mentor with the fledgling AFL club.

Not surprisingly the 38-year-old has never been fitter and will make his mind up in July whether to play with the Scorchers in the Champions League this September and October after the Perth side won the Big Bash earlier in the year.

GREENE'S FIVE-WEEK BAN IS THE RIGHT CALL

"There's plenty of time," Katich told the Daily Telegraph, explaining that he is in constant touch with Scorchers coach Justin Langer.

"If that window fits in around the job here, the Giants have said they'd be happy for me to participate (in the Champions League)."

Katich was already contracted with the Scorchers for last summer when approached by the Giants during November to become part of the support staff.

"The club (GWS) were really good about letting me play (in the Big Bash). It was nice to play in the final and get the right result."

He could have returned to England this winter for another season of county cricket but with wife Georgie expecting their second child in August, taking up the Giants' offer was a "no brainer."

"Family is really important and to be able to be home virtually every night compared to being on the road for six months in England, and to be able to work in a team where they're aspiring to win premierships and be the best in the comp, that excites me. It was too good an offer to knock back," Katich said.

So he slogged it out with the players during the preseason.

"We were kidding ourselves thinking we were fit as cricketers," said Katich, who played 56 Tests between 2001 and 2010, scoring 4188 runs at an average of 45.

"Thankfully I have been able to adjust and stay out on the park because it (being GWS runner) has been pretty physically demanding.

"These guys are phenomenal athletes. I've been blown away with what they have to go through during the preseason and on game day as well."

There have been some quizzical looks from opposition players, particularly during the preseason NAB Cup, with Swans defender Nick Malceski exclaiming "what are you doing out here" and St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt, wanting to bail Katich up for a chat about cricket.

It has been a steep learning curve sitting in on match committee and opposition review meetings to ensure he is across the Giants' game plan and player rotations.

While the sports are completely different, Katich believes that cricket can learn from the AFL.

"In terms on the level of preparation for games and the analysis there's no doubt that the AFL does it in a lot more advanced fashion than cricket," he said.

"Playing in only the Big Bash over the last couple of years we certainly do a fair bit of analysis using footage but nowhere near to the same extent as the AFL."

In his role as a leadership mentor Katich has been exposing the players to different learning experiences, which recently included a lecture at Duntroon Military College in Canberra.

There is also homework, with players asked to read books which Katich believes will help them on their journey as a professional sportsmen.

After a decade at the top in cricket there is a simple philosophy he attempts to pass on.

"I believe if you can get into good habits as early as you can during your career they hold you in good stead right throughout," said Katich.

"You're not thinking 'I'll do it tomorrow' and wait for down the track to get it right."

Tigers will play with spirit of Hafey

DAMIEN Hardwick says Richmond lost Tommy Hafey's blueprint.

But the Tigers coach warned his side was fighting to get it back and would honour two qualities Hafey stood for when he held Hardwick's post and led Richmond to four flags in its golden era.

"Relentless and ruthless," Hardwick said yesterday before the Tigers trained in 'Tommy T-shirts'.

"Tommy's an immortal of our footy club (and) a legend of the AFL so it's a significant weekend."

Hardwick said while today's pre-game routine would remain standard, he implored his Tigers to put special emphasis on running, chasing, tackling and one-percenters in yesterday's team meeting.

"(They're) the things that Tommy brought to the fore of his football coaching."

The Tigers served hot tea — Hafey's drink of choice — to about 200 fans yesterday and Hardwick said when he joined the Tigers he trawled through Richmond literature to study up on Hafey's coaching wisdom.

"The things he stood for resonate today. The blueprint Tommy left this footy club has been lost for whatever reason for a reason of time, and that's a blueprint we're trying to get back," Hardwick said.

"If we can play some quality football like those Tigers of old, we're going in the right direction."

The Sherrin used against Melbourne at the MCG today will adore Hafey's lifespan (1931-2014) while spearhead Jack Riewoldt will be desperate to end his frustrating return against the Demons as both clubs eye their third win.

Riewoldt's return of 15.26 from 11 Melbourne matches is his worse record against any club, while he has kicked more goals than behinds against the Demons only once — when he returned 2.1 back in 2008.

Hardwick said the absence of James Frawley — who usually stands Riewoldt — would be a "bonus" but was wary of the Dees' improvement under Paul Roos.

"The rise of young (Demon Tom) McDonald, Lynden Dunn's probably in career-best form, they've got some really capable players down there," he said.

Hardwick said debutant Ben Lennon would have been in the Round 1 frame if he hadn't hurt his knee and praised the crafty swingman who joined Punt Rd with pick 12 last year.

"He's an uncanny goalsneak, good mark and outstanding kick, so he's going to be a good player for us for a long period of time.

Hardwick did not shy away from his side's miserable start but said the Tigers took a step forward in their method against Geelong before the bye.

"We're disappointed with where we're at. We've only got ourselves to blame, we're not playing anywhere near our capability," he said.

"We've done a lot of soul-searching and a lot of reviewing over the course of the break and we'll change a few things to get our season back up and going."

The AFL has advised fans attending the Richmond v Melbourne game to avoid driving, with parking "extremely limited" due to scheduled maintenance works at Yarra Park.

The only vehicle access is via Gate 5 or 6 on Punt Rd.

Richmond has asked fans to arrive early for a pre-match Hafey tribute.

Stingy Magpies lead the defence

COLLINGWOOD is the AFL'S defensive pressure kings.

In a dramatic transformation for a team last year chastised for its lack of defensive running and selfishness, the Pies enter tonight's clash against Adelaide ranked equal first in the competition for creating turnovers.

REILLY DUMPED FOR COLLINGWOOD CLASH

Despite the injury-enforced absence of swingman Ben Reid (Achilles), Collingwood averages 72.7 opposition turnovers a game, equal with Geelong and ahead of pair Sydney (3rd) and Fremantle (7th), according to Champion Data.

It has reflected on the scoreboard. Since the Round 1 thrashing from Fremantle, Collingwood has conceded an average 69.3 points per game, the fewest in the AFL.

Even more significant for Nathan Buckley's men is that they have rebuffed the opposition relying on youngsters Lachlan Keeffe, 24, Jack Frost, 22 and Tom Langdon, 19, making it one of the most inexperienced defensive units in the league during Nick Maxwell's absence.

Fellow youngsters Marley Williams, 20 and Alex Fasolo are also well under the 50-game mark.

And they've been at their most stringent when the contest has been at its hottest.

Four times this season have the Pies restricted the opposition to six goals or less at three quarter time. Essendon (six), North Melbourne (five), Richmond (three) and Carlton (two) have all struggled to penetrate the Pies' new overhauled defensive system.

Such is the strength of the Collingwood defence, premiership defender Nathan Brown cannot force his way back into the line-up.

Brown has played three VFL games since injuring his ankle in Round 2 and was not on the flight to Adelaide today.

"It has been a massive plus with all the fitness and strength of the team," ruckman Brodie Grundy said as the team departed Melbourne.

"Our list at the moment is in a really strong place compared to last year — and teams like Geelong and Hawthorn, they have really strong VFL teams.

"This year, we have a lot of senior AFL players playing in the VFL.

"It's something that will make us better; at training, it's really competitive and it's just going to hold us in good stead heading into the end of the year.

"Our leadership has really grown a lot this year and it's been a real testament to the way Browny's gone about his footy."

Alan Toovey and Nick Maxwell are set to return from injury, while Sam Dwyer, Alex Fasolo and Clinton Young are also in the squad of 24.

Live: Greg Bird NRL judiciary hearing

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

GREG Bird is risking missing the entire State of Origin series for NSW by challenging a dangerous tackle charge at the NRL judiciary on Wednesday night.

Bird was hit with a grade three charge by the NRL match review committee for a dumping tackle on South Sydney's Bryson Goodwin as the NRL's cracks down on lifting tackles.

The charge carries a six-match suspension with the Titans seeking a downgrade after accepting guilt.

Should they succeed with a grade-two reduction, Bird will miss just two weeks — ruling him out of Origin I but leaving him available for NSW's remaining two games.

But should the NRL judiciary uphold the initial charge, Bird will be rubbed out for six matches.

FFA confident ADP will play All Stars

Written By Unknown on Senin, 12 Mei 2014 | 14.23

FFA boss David Gallop is confident Alessandro Del Piero will honour his commitment to captain the A-League All Stars despite reports linking the Italian with a move to the United States.

Del Piero left Sydney FC after two seasons in the A-League and is reportedly in talks with Major League Soccer clubs LA Galaxy and DC United.

The All Stars match against Del Piero's former Italian club Juventus — where he spent 19 years and scored a record 290 goals — takes place in Sydney in August, which clashes with the MLS season this year.

But Gallop insists all options were discussed with the 39-year-old football legend before the agreement was reached.

"His retirement from Sydney FC was always contemplated as a possibility, so we were careful to talk to him about that before we came to an arrangement about the All Stars game," Gallop said at the FFA Cup sponsorship announcement.

"He has made it clear that he will recognise his commitment to us and play that into any negotiations he's having, whether it's with the MLS clubs or anywhere else in the world.

"So we are confident that he will be a part of it."

Meanwhile, Gallop says the four sponsorship deals for the new FFA Cup, which kicks off on July 29, are worth a combined $4 million a year, securing the future of the tournament until the end of 2017.

The state leagues have already begun the qualification process, while all 10 A-League clubs enter the tournament in late July.

Westfield was unveiled as the naming rights partner, joining British sportswear giant Umbro, as well as Harvey Norman and NAB.

"Conceptually the competition has always been a good idea, but until we got the dollars and cents behind it, it probably wouldn't have happened," Gallop said.

"Travel is one of the expensive components and making sure match day is presented in a professional way. All of these things cost money."

‘Wallabies spots wide open’

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

TEST incumbency will mean little when the Wallabies squad is picked next week, according to Waratahs stars Bernard Foley and Sekope Kepu.

Playmaker Foley believes the race for the Wallabies' No.10 jersey is "open slather", while prop Kepu is battling Waratahs teammate Paddy Ryan for a starting spot in a bid to salvage his spot as first-choice Australian tighthead.

Quade Cooper is the incumbent five-eighth and was in excellent form in last few Tests, but his Super Rugby performances this year have been patchy.

Back-up Matt Toomua, meanwhile, has been superb for the Brumbies, while third-choice five-eighth Foley has been solid for NSW.

"The coaches know Quade's capabilities, he is the incumbent and he did so well at the back end of last year," Foley said.

"I think every position is really hotly contested, with Matt Toomua as well, it puts a lot more focus on the next three weeks.

"If you're playing the house down, for any player, then it's hard for them not to pick you.

"What they know with Quade, and if the other blokes are playing good footy, it would be hard not to.

"I think it's all still open slather."

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie will announce his squad for the three-Test June series against France next Thursday week, and one of the most intriguing battles will be in the front row.

Kepu finished 2013 at Australia's leading tighthead, but has recently been relegated to the Waratahs bench behind Ryan, who has played two Tests for the Wallabies off the bench.

"It's all about form, and if guys are playing well there's no reason you wouldn't pick them," Kepu said.

"I've just got to get back into form, do well, and keep fighting.

"I'm not going to step back or sit down, I'll keep pushing.

"There are no guarantees. I've just got to put my best foot forward every week.

"2013 is done and dusted, it's an open race.

"Guys have been playing really well, Benny [Alexander, from the Brumbies], the Rebels boys, even the Force boys, it's a good competition, and Paddy is doing well here.

"At the end of the day it's Ewen's decision.

"For me, it's just doing well and trying to perform consistently, which was one of my goals for this year."

Kepu lost his starting place after NSW was beaten by the Blues in Auckland three weeks ago, primarily due to some poor passing and ball handling.

"The onus is on me to keep it really simple for myself, that's what I did on the [2013 spring] tour," Kepu said.

"The big focus for me on tour, particularly in the northern hemisphere, was the scrum.

"I've probably gone away from that a little bit and tried to worry a bit about my all-round game.

"It's mental application really, if I can do that really well as a prop, scrummage really well, dominate, and then the carries, those things will come second.

"I'll definitely be looking to get back to that form, and do everything I can this week and moving forward."

Ryan expects a stern challenge this week from Kepu at training as the team prepares for the Lions on Sunday.

"Keps didn't do a lot wrong against the Blues early and he lost his starting spot, he'd be filthy about that, I know I would be," Ryan said.

"And I know he'll be coming at me this week, and that's great. It's happening all across the park, and that's one of the best things about our squad at the moment.

"If I start thinking about playing the Rebels next week, starting, I might get dropped by training like crap on Tuesday.

"If I start getting ahead of myself and carrying on with that kind of stuff I'll end up back on the bench."

Struggling Knights hit new low

STRUGGLING Newcastle needed to kick-start their season at Hunter Stadium against the Panthers.

Instead, they plummeted to a new low, slumping to their third straight defeat, leaving them anchored to the bottom of the premiership ladder.

Penrith, on the back of strong performances from the likes of fullback Matt Moylan, winger Josh Mansour, prop Sam McKendry and hooker James Segeyaro, clinched a 32-10 win.

Had their execution been a little better, the margin could have been even greater.

The win keeps the Panthers in the top eight.

The Knights were undermanned but could find few excuses for one of their poorest performances of the season which saw them kept scoreless in the second half.

They also had replacement hooker Adam Clydsdale put on report for an alleged crusher tackle.

The first half featured one of the most remarkable tries of the season and Panthers prop Nigel Plum wiping himself out attempting a shoulder charge as Penrith took a 16-10 lead into the break.

The two sides traded early tries to wingers James McManus (Knights) and the David Simmons (Panthers) before Penrith broke the 4-4 deadlock midway through the half with an extraordinary Simmons try.

Appearing to be chasing a lost cause with teammate Peter Wallace's grubber careering over the deadball line, fullback Matt Moylan flung himself from the in-goal and brilliantly dragged the ball back into play.

The Knights should have cleaned it up but centre Joey Leilua, who had gathered the ball, came up with a loose pass in the in-goal which Simmons was ruled to have grounded despite the attention of McManus.

Only minutes later, Plum was carted off the field in a neck brace after coming off second best in attempting to charge down a Mullen kick.

To make matters worse for the big prop, he was placed on report for a shoulder charge as the medicab was taking him from the field.

The Knights levelled it up at 10-10 when Dane Gagai crossed 13 minutes from the break but that scoreline lasted less than four minutes before Jamie Soward waltzed through some paper thin defence to score under the posts.

Two early second half tries saw the Panthers take control and extend the advantage to 26-10, before a try in the final minute to Segeyaro further inflated the scoreline.
