Latest comments (all times EDT):

1718: The Aussies are well and truly in survival mode. Warner is 7 off 27 ... unheard of.

1706: In the air ... safe! Warner gets a beauty from Welegedara that bounces sharply and he edges it while trying to defend on the back foot. Fortunately for him, there's no third slip in place and he gets away with it.

1702: Just under 20 minutes remain with the odd ball keeping noticably low.

1753: FOUR! He rubs immediate salt into the wound with a tidy drive straight down the ground for four.

1752: Wow, Cowan got very lucky there. Kulasekara had him trapped in front but the Sri Lankans only go up with a half-hearted appeal. Umpire Long says no - but replays suggest a DRS challenge would have seen him gone.

1746: Appeal ... not out. Sri Lanka go up for an LBW appeal but it's an easy decision for umpire Long. Cowan got plenty of bat on that.

1741: The rain has cleared and Warner and Cowan are back at the crease. It's still very windy though which could make this an even trickier period for the Aussies.

1730: The heavens have opened in Hobart and the players are headed for the sheds.

1723: After a brief rain delay, the players are back out in the middle. It'll be Cowan to face the first ball from Kulasekara.

1712: Well Michael Clarke's early declaration is justified with the Aussies taking a 114-run lead into the second dig. Siddle finishes with the impressive figures of 5-54 off 25.3 overs. Warner and Cowan will have just over half-an-hour to survive tonight.

1707: WICKET! ( Welegedara 0, c Hussey b Siddle, SL 336) Siddle entices the edge from Welegedara and Hussey makes no mistake at gully. That's five-for to Siddle in a welcome return to the side.

1705: Appeal... review. Eranga attempts to flay Lyon through the covers but swings and misses. The Aussies go up for a hopeful caught-behind appeal, before reviewing the decision. There looked to be no bat in that one. Not out.

1701: WICKET! (Kulasekara 23, c sub (Silk) b Lyon, SL 9/336) Kulasekara tries to repeat the dose but doesn't get enough of it, with the sub fielder Jordan Silk taking a good outfield catch on the boundary.

1659: SIX! Kulasekara belts Lyon from outside off stump to the mid-wicket fence. It carries all the way for six.

1657: FOUR! FOUR! Kulasekara attempts to drive Siddle and gets an outside edge that flies safely through the gap behind point and all the way to the rope. The new man Eranga finishes the over with a nice drive down the ground for four.

1654: WICKET! (Herath 0, LBW Siddle, SL 8/320) Tony Hill raises the finger to send Herath on his way for a duck. That sounded very woody and replays show it to be a shocker as it took a huge inside edge. Sri Lanka had no reviews remaining so they couldn't challenge it.

1644: Appeal... review: Siddle pitches up to Jayawardene and clips him on the pad with some bat in there aswell. The Aussies go up but umpire Hill says no. Clarke opts for the review and the replay shows that it was pad first, with the ball going on to hit middle and leg. Good use of the DRS from the home side. WICKET! (Jayawardene 40, LBW Siddle, SL 7/316)

1640: SIX! Lyon might not be laughing so much now. Kulasekara whacks him over the rope at long-on with a crisp strike for six.

1631: Well at least there's one positive out of that Wade howler; Nathan Lyon is having a chuckle about it.

1628: Chance... missed! Oh dear. Lyon drifts one past the outside edge of an advancing Kulasekara but Wade misses a simple stumping.

1623: FOUR! Starc drops short and Jayawardene latches onto it with a well-timed pull shot. He's raced to 37 off 42.

1617: FOUR! Jayawardene uses his feet to Lyon and lofts him over mid-on for a boundary.

1610: WICKET! (Dilshan 147, b Starc, SL 6/289) Dilshan's brilliant innings comes to an end. From around the wicket, Starc delivers a yorker at the base of the stumps and Dilshan clean misses with the stroke of a tired man.  Well done to the veteran, he's rescued his side with an innings that's lasted for almost seven hours.

1605: FOUR! Starc bangs one in short to Jayawardene who plays a wild pull shot, getting a top edge that sails over the slips cordon and down to the third man boundary.

1601: FOUR! Lyon tosses one up to Jayawardene who swats him with the spin and to the mid-wicket boundary.

1549: Starc has really struggled for consistency all day - something noted by Cam of Brissy who says: Starc only seems capable of bowling in 3 or 4 over spells. Too much 20/20 for him IMO. We need bowlers who are able to bowl long periods. We have bowlers in cutting and bird who have dominated shield for 2 seasons, give them a go. Everyone saying siddle should be dropped is joking, he deserves his spot. He just needs some help.

1547: FOUR! FOUR! Starc back into the attack and Dilshan whacks him belligerently through the covers for four. Another half-volley in the over receives identical treatment.

1544: FOUR! Jayawardene cuts at a ball that probably wasn't wide enough for the shot and gets a top edge which flies over the head of Hussey at gully.

1543: FOUR! Jayawardene opens his account with a neat flick off the pads for four. That also takes the tourists past the follow-on. SL 5/253

1541: Watson resumes with his probing seamers after the break.

1521: TEA: Dilshan continues to lead the Sri Lankan resistance. He goes to tea on 132, with the new man Jayawardene yet to open his account.

1514: The new batsman Prasanna Jayawardene cops a nasty one on the inside of the thigh from Watson. Welcome to Hobart Prasanna.

1459: WICKET! (Mathews 75, LBW Siddle, SL 5/248) At last, Siddle strikes! The Victorian paceman gets a good-length off-cutter to jag back at Mathews, catching him on the back pad in front of the stumps. Mathews reviews the decision but there's no problems with it, meaning his marathon partnership with Dilshan finally comes to an end.

1455: In the air! FOUR! Dilshan flashes hard at a full and wide ball from Watson and gets a thick edge. It flies through the gap between gully and slip for Dilshan's first boundary in a while.

1447: FOUR! Mathews drives Starc through cover-point for four. He's up to 74 now, with his partner Dilshan on 125. SL 4/241

1434: FOUR! One of the shots of the day from Mathews. Starc strays onto his leg stump and the young all-rounder flicks it square for four. That almost looked classic Mark Waugh. Sri Lanka require just 14 more to reach the follow-on.

1432: The Aussies have taken the new ball and it will be Starc who gets first use of it.

1420: FOUR! At last, some action. Lyon delivers his 'Jeff' ball but it's too short and wide. Mathews pounces on the half-tracker and dispatches it to the boundary.

1414: It's very slow going here at Bellerive. There's been just two scoring shots in the past seven overs.

1403: Stephen of west pennant hills says: I wonder if it was a bit of arrogance for Australia to declare at 5/450. It is almost saying to Sri Lanka we dont think you will get anywhere near that target because your not a good side. If they do come close to the target it will be a wake up call to the Australian bowlers.

Trent says: The decision seemed justified at the end of play last night but this partnership will certainly be making Clarke nervous. If they can find this breakthrough though, it wouldn't surprise me to see the tail crumble.

1350: Close! Dilshan drops the ball in front of Warner at point. There's a "yes...no" call from Dilshan and Mathews is stranded midway down the pitch. Warner's throw just misses the stumps at the bowler's end.

1341: FOUR! Lyon tosses up full and wide and Dilshan makes light work of a juicey half-volley. SL 4/214

1338: Just read an interesting stat: that fifty takes Mathews's average against Australia to 107.66 in four Tests.

1330: FOUR! Mathews plays a loose stroke to Lyon - a bit of a cross-bat swipe - but gets enough of it to beat the fielder to the rope at mid-wicket. Fifty to Mathews! He ends the Lyon over with a single to bring up his half-century. This pair have now put on 117 together.

1317: FOUR! Dilshan finally breaks the shackles with a booming cover drive off Starc. That's his 17th boundary. SL 4/193

1312: Starc is bowling with far greater venom after the break. He has Dilshan playing and missing three times in that over.

1306: Edge... short! Starc entices the edge from Dilshan but it falls a couple of feet short of Watson at second slip.

1302: The man they call 'Gaz' bowls a tidy over for a maiden. The good news is the sun is now shining after that heavy shower forced an early lunch break. Mitchell Starc has the ball at the other end and will need to be a bit more consistent than his opening spell if he's to trouble this pair.

1300: Nathan Lyon will take the ball to kick things off after lunch.

1219: LUNCH. There's still plenty of water on the covers so the umpires have decided to take lunch. We'll be back in around 40 minutes.

1211: The skies look to be clearing and the umpires are heading out onto the ground to assess the damage. Lets hope we'll be back on shortly.

1159: Delay. The rain arrives for the first time today and the umpires decide it's too heavy to continue. Sri Lanka won't mind this at all; particularly Dilshan, who can mentally start again after the elation of his hundred.

1156: HUNDRED TO DILSHAN! There it is. Dilshan finally gets some width from Siddle and squeezes him behind point for two. The Sri Lankan opener yells in excitement - perhaps relief too - as he brings up his first Test hundred in Australia. It's been a timely dig with his side in real danger overnight.

1151: Dilshan faces Watson and turns him down to fine leg. He reaches the non-strikers end and considers a second, but wisely turns back. That takes him to 99. SL 4/183

1141: Dilshan has been caught in the nervous nineties for a while now. He's up to 97 and you sense he's anxious to find the rope.

1134: Gary of Sydney asks: Hey Trent. With Hilfy possibly out for the next match and the Aussies likely to be up 1-0 in the series, do you think the selectors will take a leap of faith and finally give the leading shield wicket taker Jackson bird a go on Boxing Day? Or will they go back to their dried up pool of bowlers and pick pie chucked Johnson?

Trent says: That's a very good question Gary. I'd imagine the aforementioned 'pie chucker' would get the nod given he was 12th man for this Test. But I'm with you there - would love to see Bird get a chance. He can really move the ball and his numbers over the past year have been remarkable.

1125: FOUR! FOUR! Mathews decides he's seen enough of Clarke. He crunches the skipper down the ground then lofts him over mid-on to the rope.

1120: FOUR! Starc overpitches and Dilshan punches him through the gap at cover-point for a boundary. He's up to 87 and all of a sudden that follow-on score doesn't look so far away. SL 4/163

1114: We've got a change in the attack with the skipper Michael Clarke giving himself a trundle.

1109: Rippersportspro of NSW says: Another Test match, another side injury. Thankfully the Aussies have Shane Watson as a back up seamer. However, he is going to have to bowl more overs than expected now that Hilfenhaus as gone off with what hopefully is not too serious an injury.

Trent says: What is it about Aussie fast bowlers and their sides at the moment? They're dropping like flies. There's confirmation that Hilfy has left the ground for scans.

1104: FOUR! Dilshan plays a textbook straight drive to finish an expensive over from Watson. The deficit is now 297. SL 4/153

1100: In the air! But FOUR! Dilshan opens the shoulders to flay Watson through covers but gets a thick edge. The man of the moment, Michael Hussey, gets airbourne at gully but he probably needed to be another foot or two taller to reach that. Another boundary - albeit streaky - to Dilshan.

1058: FOUR! FOUR! Nathan Lyon comes into the attack and Dilshan is immediately dancing down the track, whacking him straight down the ground to move to 70. Mathews shows equal use of the feet to hoist Lyon over mid-off to complete a good over for the visitors.

1053: FOUR! Watson bangs one in and Mathews pulls brilliantly. He's been savage off the back foot today. SL 4/130

1050: It looked as though Hilfenhaus may have suffered a side strain. Nothing official yet. We've now got two local boys, Jordan Silk and Beau Webster (replacing Nathan Lyon) out on the field. There might be more Tasmanian's on the ground than there is in the crowd.

1042: FOUR! FOUR! Mitchell Starc into the attack for the first time this morning. Dilshan greets the NSW left-armer with a bludgeoning cover drive, then repeats the dose a few balls later in almost identical fashion. Starc persists from around the wicket - if he's going to stick there, he can't afford Dilshan that amount of width.

1035: A bit of a scare here for Australia - Hilfenhaus has left the field with an injury concern. Shane Watson will complete the over.

1033: If you can bear to take your eyes away from this page for a couple of minutes, I highly recommend you take a look at Brett Geeve's take on day two. The big fella certainly has a way with words.

1026: FOUR! The new bowler Ben Hilfenhaus drops fractionally short and Mathews pulls him away to the mid-wicket boundary. They've touted him as a future Sri Lankan skipper and he looks a class act so far this morning.

1022: Sri Lanka's primary target this morning will be reaching the 251 required to avoid the follow-on. If that's to happen, you'd imagine one of this pair will need to make a decent score.

1015: FOUR! Siddle bangs one in short to Mathews but he's up to the task, playing an impressive pull shot in front of square for four. SL 4/99

1012: If you missed out yesterday, here's a quick recap of the situation: Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan is still at the crease on 50, with youngster Angelo Mathews joining him in the middle. The Aussies nabbed the key wickets of Dimuth Karunaratne (14), Kumar Sangakkara (4), Mahela Jayawardene (12) and Thilan Samaraweera (7) late yesterday to put themselves in a strong position midway through this Test.

1008: Morning all, Trent Hile back with you in the hot seat for day three of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Hobart. A quick tip of the hat to my comrade John Clark for his stellar innings yesterday, with the old boy living up to his Bradman tag. The news is we have an early start to the morning (which caught a few out - including myself) with Sri Lanka resuming in all sorts of trouble at 4-87.
