Power want 50,000 members

PORT Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley spoke plainly when asked why the club moved to extend the contract of five players this week: it is about backing his players in.

And Hinkley has taken an active role in pushing for a record membership; Port has set an ambitious target of having 50,000 members for their first season at Adelaide Oval.

Over five days, the Power announced it had signed long-term deals with Jay Schulz, Jake Neade, Hamish Hartlett, vice-captain Brad Ebert and captain Travis Boak.

Boak, who had a fine season as captain, was the longest after he added four seasons to the year he had remaining on his contract. He's locked in until the end of 2018, Ebert the end of 2017.

"All the ones we've signed we've signed, maybe expect for Schulzy, they're all incredibly young so they have long futures ahead of them,'' Hinkley said. "And being part of a footy club, we know how important it is to keep your list together.

"I think we've got a group now that's really committed to what we're still trying to build.

"They see that as a really important part of their future and for us, clearly, we think they're massive to what we're trying to build.''

Hinkley concedes there is a risk to long-term contracts, but it is likely to become more common as clubs seek to stave off the threat of free agency and players being chased by other clubs.

The signings come as Sydney signed Lance "Buddy'' Franklin to a nine-year deal and Gold Coast handed Jack Martin a five-year contract to begin his AFL career.

"There's always an injury risk, I think, for everyone,'' Hinkley said. "But I think you back your players in and you support them. They train the way they train and Hamish I think is on top his body conditioning stuff now.

"We've got Brad, who's fool proof; Travis is the same - they'll play a lot of games. Shulzy's the same. Jake in his first year ... I think they were pretty easy decisions to make.

"If they're in a position now that they're happy and they want to commit to the footy club for the long term ... I think a lot of football clubs would like to have the foundations of their footy club already locked away.

"I think it happens regularly to players you know are going to be around for a long time. Even the franchise clubs - we've seen the Gold Coast offer Jack Martin a five-year deal, even before he's played a game of AFL football.

"Is there risk involved? Yeah, there's some risk involved. But you back your people to perform to their level and at their best and that's what we've done.''

Hinkley has also been heavily involved in the club's membership drive. It is not for him to sit back and say that his role is just to coach the team: his philosophy is that in a club, everybody helps out where they can.

He recognised the target was ambitious, but didn't think it was unrealistic.

"It's what you have to be (bold and ambitious),'' Hinkley said. "We understand that we're in a two-team city and Adelaide has got big numbers.

"We know that for us to be successful on the field we have to be successful off the field. That means our fans and our members, they need to join up and be part of what we're trying to do.

"Last year they were fantastic; they came in big numbers.

"Hopefully they felt like we delivered on the field for them and that we can actually continue to get better.

"And here at the Adelaide Oval, to fill it with Port people would be fantastic.''

Paper Talk: Parties and millionaires

PREMIER League Christmas parties, Fergie can't get a million while Sneijder can manage on $5m and Rodgers the dodger. It's Friday's Paper Talk!

SNEIJDER'S RICH ENOUGH

Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder is apparently willing to take a $1.8m-a-year pay cut to secure a move to Manchester United in the January transfer window.

The Netherlands star is one of David Moyes's many reported targets and said to be available for around $18m - but the Dutchman will have to eek by on just $5m a year, opposed to the very reasonable $7m he gets in Turkey.

Meanwhile, it seems David Moyes just can't get shot of Wilfried Zaha. The highly rated winger has failed to make much of an impression so far at Old Trafford and his hopes of getting some game time have been scuppered, after Newcastle boss Alan Pardew said he wasn't interested.

The Arsenal Christmas party. Do they look like champions to you? Source: Supplied

A PAIR OF 'NANAS

The Arsenal squad took a break from their heavy playing schedule to dress up for the club Christmas party on a fancy dress party bus through London. And it was a wild night on the town for the Gunners, with Lucas Podolski dressed as the Hulk, Mesut Ozil as Superman, and Theo Walcott and Keiran Gibbs going as Bananas in Pyjamas. Whoa there!

But the gig was crashed by former Gunner Ashley Cole, who also headed to the same swinging London nightspot, after the Chelsea party got blown off by players who'd rather spend time with their families. Yawn!

And if that wasn't boring enough, Manchester City players endured - sorry, enjoyed a night out in the cold, dark rain, spending an hour in the pub with nursing a couple of soft drinks. See, the life of a Premier League footballer isn't all that exciting after all.

RODGERS'S DODGER

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he had a 'lucky escape' by not joining Tottenham when he had the chance.

The Reds boss was in the frame to replace Harry Redknapp while he was still at Swansea but decided on the Anfield move instead, and after seeing what happened to Andre Villas-Boas, the Northern Irishman believes he dodged a bullet.

Asked how he felt after AVB's sacking, Rodgers said: "A close shave. They are a great club and one of the things I looked at was the history.

"They'd had 11 managers in 18 years there so for someone like myself, I needed to create something; I needed to go to a club that was going to give us that opportunity.

"I am more than happy with the choice I made to come here and hopefully in time it will prove to be the right one."

FERGIE NOT QUITE A MILLIONAIRE

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson appeared on the UK version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and managed to bag $92,000 for the Manchester United Foundation.

This was Fergie's second appearance on the show - which was the final ever episode - and he managed to top his first sum of $50k.

But the legendary football manager fell short when he said a newt, rather than a frog, was on one side of a common brick. (The indentation in a brick is called a "frog".)

BLANC'S BLOOPER

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc has come under fire for sexism after asking a female journalist "You know what 4-3-3 means, don't you?'"

In a run-of-the-mill press conference, Swedish journalist Johanna Franden asked Blanc about his tactics, to which the classy Frenchman responded:

'Women talking football tactics, it's so beautiful. I think it's fantastic. You know what 4-3-3 means, don't you?'

QUIT OR BE SACKED

Not exactly the sort of Christmas message you want from your boss - but that's exactly what Cardiff City coach Malky McKay has been told by club owner Vincent Tan.

The BBC reports Tan emailed the coach a long letter in which he was highly critical of his coach, who led the club back into the top flight after 51 years.

Tam has previously criticised McKay for overspending - but the Malaysian has also changed the club's colours from blue to red and altered the crest.

To all those fans who hope a rich benefactor comes to the aid of their club - be careful what you wish for …

BLUES GET THE BLUES

Everton's Christmas preparations have been hit by the news talented youngster Gerard Deulofeu has been ruled out for two months.

The highly rated 19-year-old forward was stretchered off during the Toffees' 4-1 win over Fulham and sent back to parent club Barcelona for a scan, which revealed the injury was more serious than first thought.

Rodman holds tryouts for Nth Korea match

FORMER NBA star Dennis Rodman held tryouts on Friday for a North Korean team to face a dozen NBA veterans in an exhibition game on leader Kim Jong Un's birthday next month - though he hasn't convinced all the Americans it's safe to come.

Rodman says plans for the January 8 game are moving ahead but some of the Americans he wants are afraid to come.

Some foreign analysts say the recent execution of Kim's uncle has cast doubt on the leader's future. But North Korean officials say there is no instability and Kim remains firmly in control.

"... I'm just telling them, you know, don't be afraid man. It's all love; it's all love here," Rodman said after the tryouts.

"I understand what's going on with the political stuff, and I say, I don't go into that venture. I'm just doing one thing for these kids here, and for this country, and for my country, and for the world pretty much."

Rodman said he expected to announce the roster soon and was planning another game in June.

He watched a few dozen local players take to the court. He said each of the 12 he chose would get two new pairs of tennis shoes.

Asked why he liked basketball, North Korean player Kim Un Chol told Rodman he started playing because he was impressed by it on TV, and wanted to be good at it because it was a favourite of leader Kim and his late father, Kim Jong Il.

Rodman asked all the players if they felt the same way. They nodded in unison.

"I want you guys to do one thing for your leader," Rodman said. "It's his birthday. It's a very special, special day for the country."

Rodman and Kim have struck up an unlikely friendship since he first travelled to Pyongyang in February.

He remains the highest-profile American to meet Kim since the leader inherited power from his father in 2011.

Rodman stressed he hoped the game would be friendly, without political or nationalistic overtones.

He said former NBA players would play the North Koreans in the first half, but the teams would be mixed for the second half.

"It's not about win or loss. It's about one thing - unite two countries."

Windies fight back against NZ

Denesh Ramdin of the West Indies celebrates his century during day one of the third international cricket Test match between New Zealand and the West Indies at Seddon Park. Source: MICHAEL BRADLEY / AFP

A FIGHTING counter-attack led by Denesh Ramdin ensured the West Indies overcame a collapse to end the opening day of the third Test in a handy position against New Zealand.

Ramdin scored 107 - his fourth Test century - and was ably assisted by veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul as the pair added 200 for the sixth wicket to reach 6-289 at stumps after being put in at Hamilton's Seddon Park.

They had earlier lost four wickets in the space of 34 balls after lunch to slump to 5-86 before the rescue mission was launched.

Ramdin was the more aggressive of the pair and brought up his ton with his 18th boundary slashing Trent Boult over the slips. The 28-year-old vice-captain was dropped twice, once by Kane Williamson on 57 and then by Tim Southee on 92.

He was finally claimed by wicketkeeper BJ Watling, albeit after a juggle, to give allrounder Corey Anderson his third wicket on a day when bowlers got little out of the pitch.

Chanderpaul was within sight of his 29th Test century at the close to finish the day on 94 with captain Darren Sammy yet to score.

After being asked to bat, the tourists lost only Kieran Powell in the morning session, but after lunch a clatter of wickets put their hopes of denying New Zealand a series win in serious doubt. Southee (2-56) and Anderson (3-25) combined to claim four wickets in quick time.

Southee got rid of Kraigg Brathwaite (45), called into the side for the injured Darren Bravo, to start the rot after earlier spilling a catch off the opener.

He then used a decision review to claim Kirk Edwards to a faint edge behind.

Marlon Samuels recklessly slashed a ball to gully and Anderson trapped Narsingh Deonarine lbw before the record sixth-wicket stand for the West Indies in New Zealand ended the hosts' dominance. Anderson was the pick of the bowlers despite leaving the field briefly after appearing to strain a hamstring.

Aside from Sunil Narine, who replaced the banned Shane Shillingford, the tourists opted for left-arm spinner Veersammy Permaul over paceman Shannon Gabriel as they made three changes to the side thrashed in Wellington.

New Zealand, seeking a first win in a three-Test series since 2006, were unchanged and captain Brendon McCullum opted to bowl after winning his first toss of the series.

'Benji can have Folau-like impact'

Benji Marshall will play for the Blues after quitting Rugby League. Picture: Mark Evans Source: Mark Evans / News Limited

FORMER All Black Daryl Gibson, now assistant coach of the NSW Waratahs, says don't discount Benji Marshall making an Israel Folau-like impact on Super Rugby next year.

Folau proved the revelation of 2013, picking up the Australian Super Rugby rookie of the year award before equalling fellow dual international Lote Tuqiri's calendar-year tryscoring record for the Wallabies.

In what promises to be an electric night at Allianz Stadium, Folau and Marshall are set to line up as opposing fullbacks in the Waratahs' second pre-season trial against the Blues on February 7.

"I reckon it'll probably be worth the admission alone seeing Benji's transition,'' Gibson said on Thursday.

"I'm sure you'll get a lot of Wests Tigers supporters being interested in how he's going.

"Then also to see Folau, two rugby league recruits going up against each other, it's very exciting.''

Rarely has a player made a more spectacular entrance to rugby than the code-hopping Folau.

Gibson, though, says it would be foolish to think Marshall couldn't make a similar mark after a decade mesmerising opposition defences in the NRL.

"For the last three or four years, he's been one of the most outstanding rugby league players for New Zealand,'' Gibson said.

"You never can say he can't do something. He's got a rugby background. He grew up in New Zealand with the game, so he's got an exciting challenge in front of him, I believe.

"He's joined a very young and talented Auckland team that's very similar to the Waratahs in that it's building its culture and building a team that can win.''

Playing in the halves for Wests Tigers and the Kiwis, Marshall won a premiership, a World Cup and the Golden Boot as the international rugby league player of the year in 2010.

But Gibson believes the 28-year-old will revel in the No.15 jumper.

"They've probably got him right at fullback,'' he said.

"It's something we spoke a lot about with Israel, about where would he have the easiest transition into rugby union and I think fullback will suit Benji.

"He will get a lot more time and space as opposed to playing at flyhalf, first-receiver. He's going to have less time than what he would have in rugby league.

``Israel's really pointed the way with transitions. He's done phenomenally well in his first year of rugby union and within 10 games you could see he's got something.

``Now it's all in front in Benji and it's very exciting.''

Incredible footage of Aussie team song

THIS is one of the rarest sightings in Australian in sport.

Experienced sports reporter Peter Lalor has spent well over a decade covering cricket and other sports for The Australian.

Lalor has broken some of cricket's biggest stories - including the blow-by-blow breakdown of Boonie's famous 52 beers on the flight to London. But in all that time, he has never once heard the Australian cricket team sing its famous song Under The Southern Cross I Stand.

Until yesterday.

About 6pm Perth time yesterday, as twilight descended on an empty WACA, the Australian team and some key staff moved to the centre of the ground and formed a huddle.

Lalor was seated near the boundary fence and had the good sense to take a quick phone video as the jubilant Australian team proceeded to belt out all two "verses" of the team song.

In truth, there is only one verse but the team sings it twice. And "singing" is a rather generous description of what in reality should be called chanting.

Chant or song, Under the Southern Cross I Stand has been around since the 1970s, when wicket keeper Rod Marsh popularised it and bastardised the lyrics so that the last line "Australia You Little Beauty" became "Australia you f - king beauty".

"What was surprising was the volume of it, "Lalor says of yesterday's impromptu Ashes-winning celebration. "I've never seen such enthusiasm."

Lalor says the song has been sung outside a few times in the last, most notably on Table Mountain in South Africa, and at the historic 16th century fort in the Sri Lankan city of Galle.

A member of the Australian team confirmed to Lalor that the song was sung in the dressing room yesterday before the team later moved outside for a second go.

As the video shows, it wasn't the prettiest sound ever heard, but it was still a much classier victory celebration than England's pee-on-the-pitch moment at The Oval in London earlier this year.

Reni spared sack, banned from booze

RENI Maitua has avoided having his NRL contract torn up by Canterbury following his suspension for breaking the club's code of contract.

Maitua was suspended from all duties last month after he was charged with assault of a taxi driver, putting his future in the code in doubt.

But the club's board on Wednesday reinstated the 31-year-old, who rejoined the Bulldogs this year after previously playing for them between 2004 and 2008.

It comes with strict boundaries, however, which includes the one-time Australia representative agreeing to a complete alcohol ban.

Maitua revealed on Sunday that he suffers depression and once attempted suicide.

"Reni is acutely aware of the expectations required of him and he is determined to be an integral member of this club in 2014," Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle said in a statement.

"He is committed to the conditions placed around him and recognises that he can play a role in working with younger athletes to share his learnings from his time in the game."

Can Aussies join whitewash greats?

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 17 Desember 2013 | 14.23

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

AUSTRALIA'S thunderous victory at the WACA Ground has prompted fresh McGrath-esque predictions of a series whitewash.

The excitement is understandable. England's meek capitulations in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth have provided little evidence of an imminent fightback in Melbourne or Sydney.

And Australia's rediscovered aggression with bat and ball has Michael Clarke's squad well placed to send the tourists home with a zero on the scoreboard, tails between legs and careers on the line.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Australia has only achieved a series whitewash three times in the 136 years of Ashes combat (minimum three-Test series). Here, we take a look at examples the current Australian squad must follow to clean sweep the series.

1920-21 - Australia won 5-0

And you thought Alastair Cook's squad had problems.

The Johnny Douglas-captained MCC squad to tour Australia barely had time to recover from the war when asked to make the long-haul to Australia.

Two of England's stars, Reggie Spooner and Vallance Jupp, were forced to withdraw from the series while Jack Hearne fell ill during the second Test and was unable to take part in the remainder of the series.

There was controversy, too. Right-arm spinner Rockley Wilson caused a stir when it was discovered he was filing match reports for the Daily Express in London while playing on the tour (the MCC would later ban players reporting on matches they were playing in as a result).

The Australians, led by Warwick "Big Ship" Armstrong, romped to a 5-0 series victory. As Wisden noted at the time, the series results confirmed "English cricket had not had time to regain its pre-war standard".

1979-80 - Australia won 3-0

Australia's first home summer following Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket was an exciting time, pitting the Aussies against England and the West Indies over three Tests each.

While the series were legitimate, England declined to play Australia for the Ashes, so the Aussie team bought a $10 trophy called 'Ernie' and told the Poms that's what they'd be playing for.

Either Ernie proved a disincentive or England was unable to handle the star power of a side unrecognisable in the Test arena over the previous three or four seasons due to Packer's deep pockets.

Captained by Greg Chappell, the Aussies steamrolled to victory in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, where Ian Botham's first century against Australia failed to add respectibility to the scoreboard due to Dennis Lillee's 11 wickets for the match.

2006-07 - Australia won 5-0

Australia's heartbreaking 2005 series loss in England made this one of the most eagerly anticipated Ashes series of all-time.

Could a great side clinging on to its last vestiges of power rise to one final challenge or would England's rise continue in one of the toughest places in the world to play Test cricket.

We didn't have to wait long to find out. Steve Harmison's famous first ball of the Gabba Test that was caught by Andrew Flintoff at second slip set the tone for what became the mother of all wallopings.

Only in Adelaide did the England side ever really look like winning (or at least drawing) a Test, and that was snatched from them by Shane Warne who triggered an incredible collapse with his second innings 4/49.

This series was significant not just for the velocity of the thrashing but for the players it sent off.

Three of Australia's all-time greats Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer played farewell games in the fifth Test in Sydney, while Damien Martyn went quietly and without fanfare after Adelaide.

And with McGrath famous for his declarations that Australia would win 5-0, there couldn't have been a more appropriate way to go out.

Neade commits to Power until 2016

The AFL's lightest player this year is halfway through his pre-season goal of adding some much needed beef to his tiny 170cm frame which he says will help keep him on the field for longer.

In yesterday becoming the latest Port Adelaide player to ink a new long-term deal with the club, livewire forward Jake Neade revealed he wants to enter 2014 at 70kg - 4kg heavier than he played at in his debut season this year.

"I'm up to 68kg but I want to get to 70kg,'' said Neade, who has put on 2kg of muscle since the end of last season.

"I need to put on more muscle to be able to go against my opponents as far as body strength is concerned.''

SCHULZ INKS NEW DEAL WITH POWER

The previously unheralded Neade, 19, exceeded expectations in his rookie year, playing a key role as a tackling machine inside 50.

In the opening 17 rounds he led the Power in inside 50 tackles with 16 and became a crowd favourite with his speed, tenacity and ability to create openings for teammates.

But he tired late in the season and was spelled for a couple of weeks as a first year of AFL took its toll on his small frame, resulting in him playing 16 of a possible 24 matches.

"It's a big target to play 20 games next year,'' Neade said.

"I just want to get my body right, even if it means being the sub.

"Mid-season this year I was starting to tire a bit, my body just wasn't used to it.

"But I've worked hard at training and with extra pre-season work and a few more kilograms hopefully I'll be all right."

Neade - from the small Northern Territory town of Elliott - is slogging his way through his first full pre-season.

In his first season at the club he was excused from some of the pre-season work as high performance manager Darren Burgess tried not to break the new boys down.

But Neade said he had never been pushed so hard in his life during the club's pre-season training camp in Dubai and was already reaping the rewards.

"Last year we weren't doing much as first years … but in my second year we're pretty much doing the whole pre-season now," Neade said.

"I've put on some weight and my running's been a lot better this year, which is something I really value because it allows me to do more for the team.''

Neade was already contracted for next season but has extended his deal by two years, tying him to the club until the end of 2016.

SHANE Watson inflicted crucial blows on England with both bat and ball as Australia edged closer to an Ashes triumph at the third Test in Perth.

After blazing a quick-fire century this morning, Watson struck with the ball to help reduce the tourists to 2-67 at drinks on day four.

Click here to see a full scoreboard, ball-by-ball commentary, stats and FoxTracker in our Match Centre.

Watson trapped Michael Carberry in front to snare an important breakthrough after the opener had combined with Joe Root for a 62-run stand.

England skipper Alastair Cook was not able to provide any sort of resistance at the top of the order in his side's pursuit of a mammoth 504 after being bowled with the first delivery of the innings.

In his 100th Test, Cook was bested by a superb delivery from Ryan Harris that came off the seam to clip the top of the off bail.

Cook's brief stay was in direct contrast to Watson's innings earlier in the day, where he blasted five sixes to lift the Aussies to 6-369 before the declaration came.

Resuming on just 29 overnight, Watson blasted five sixes on his way to a century to lift the Aussies to 6-369 declared, an overall lead of 503.

England's leading wicket taker for the series was captured on camera trudging to the nets for a fitness test, but he was limping noticeably, and after just a few minutes walked from the nets and straight out of the ground to be taken to hospital for X-rays.

Johnson has inflicted pain on England's tail all series, but this delivery might just be the killer blow to England's slim chances of retaining the Ashes.

The visitors now face a long stretch in the field in extreme heat one bowler down - a recipe for disaster in what could be the Ashes deciding third Test.

DAVID Warner came close to scoring a century in a session as he pounded England into submission in the third Test in Perth.

Warner belted the tourists to all parts of the field as Australia took complete control on day three, with the opener racing to 81 off just 94 balls to lead his side to 0-123 at tea, an overall lead of 257.

He found a willing ally in Chris Rogers, who seemed determined to atone for his suicidal first innings run-out on his way to an unbeaten 42.

Warner creamed 13 fours and a six before forcing the tourists to push four men out on the rope at one stage as he closed in on his second ton of the series.

England's attack was weakened by the absence of pace spearhead Stuart Broad, who was taken to hospital to have scans on an injured right foot on a horror day for the visitors.

Broad was struck by a swinging yorker from Mitchell Johnson that trapped him LBW in England's first innings.

The 27-year-old initially headed to the nets to test whether he could bowl, but England's medical staff reportedly ruled that he should have the foot examined first.

The injury blow rubbed salt into the tourists' wounds on a day where Australia edged to within touching distance of reclaiming the Ashes urn.
