Ruck ‘n’ role revival for McIntosh

HAMISH McIntosh was glad he didn't listen to his body and quit.

After two nightmare years on the sidelines, the Geelong ruckman realised "how much I missed footy" as he completed Friday night's NAB Challenge win over Melbourne — his first in Cats colours — unscathed.

As expected, adapting to the pace of AFL was a shock to the system."The first five minutes I was calling for the ambulance," McIntosh said.

SCOTT: SELWOOD INJURY MINOR

"But other than that I felt really positive and felt like I played at the level OK.

"I had so many nerves going into the game, but I feel like I have dispelled a few of them now and can hopefully play some good footy."

As tough as the past two years have been, McIntosh now faces another battle. He will attempt to play 80 minutes against his old club, North Melbourne, on Friday, in a bid to lock down a Round 1 berth.

Coach Chris Scott has hinted he would prefer to pick only one of McIntosh and Dawson Simpson in the seniors.

McIntosh, 29, said it was up to himself and Simpson to contribute as forwards to convince Scott the pair could work in the same side.

"It's something I did with Goldy (Todd Goldstein) when I was at North. I played more forward there," McIntosh said.

"With Nathan (Vardy) going out, Scotty is still probably searching for the structure he is going to go with. It's up to Daws and I to make it work and I thought tonight was a really positive step for us."

Scott was impressed with the former Kangaroo, saying "how good was that" in regards to the 203cm big man, after the 13-point win over the Dees.

The 29-year-old McIntosh wants to finish his career "in the right way" after considering retirement.

"It (finishing football) crossed my mind a few times," McIntosh said. "There was a few times I didn't think my body would get back up to playing (AFL) footy.

"When you are rocking up to training every day sore and thinking there is another operation around the corner, you get pretty flat.

"But it's all worthwhile to experience playing again. It was only 50 minutes but I was like a kid in a lolly jar.

"I don't know how long I've got left but I want to make sure I can play every game I can."

Wanderers need to move on now

THE Wanderers need to move on from their disappointing midweek AFC Champions League defeat when they host the Newcastle Jets at Pirtek Stadium.

The western Sydney club was comprehensively beaten 3-1 at home by Korean side Ulsan Hyundai on Wednesday night, but their debut in the premier club competition was marred by the behaviour of its hard-core fan base.

Several flares were discharged by a section of the Red and Black Bloc during the first half and, under Asian Football Confederation rules, the club is liable to pay a fine of US$5,000 per flare.

As a result, Wanderers officials have banned the fans involved from bringing in musical instruments, banners and fence posters to games pending an investigation by police and Football Federation Australia into the anti-social behaviour.

Wanderers defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley insists the team isn't focusing on any negatives from the game and is looking forward to putting in an improved performance in front of their loyal fans.

"It's another opportunity to play in front of our fans, who have been amazing since the club's inception and it's always great to play in front of them," he said.

"We try not to focus on too many negatives and let confidence be a player in our games. We try, win, lose or draw, to learn the best we can from the previous game and move on and just try get better every week.

"The quick turnaround gives us an opportunity to right a few wrongs quicker than normal. It obviously wasn't the best result or performance from us midweek, but we'll be looking to move forward and bounce back from that as quickly as possible."

It's the Wanderers third game in eight days and coach Tony Popovic is likely to make changes for the encounter. But, knowing he would have his club's participation in the Asian Champions League to negotiate, Popovic has been rotating his squad for much of the season.

"That's what the manager has been doing all year and he was coming in for some criticism beforehand for doing it, but he knows what he's doing," Topor-Stanley said.

The Wanderers defender says the club has spent the majority of the week focusing on recovery rather than training and are excited to be approaching the business end of the season.

"We knew what was in store and it's only the beginning," he said.

"We're well prepared mentally and physically, so it's an exciting challenge for players and fans.

"It's about getting the body right and in the right mind-frame to back up for a game. The coaching staff know what they're doing, they've put us through the motions and the guys that haven't played have probably done a bit more, but that's normal."

The Wanderers enjoy an impressive record against the Jets, with just one defeat from their five previous meetings. And while the western Sydney side head into the game with just one defeat in their last five games, Newcastle have managed only one win from their last nine A-League matches.

But Topor-Stanley insists records and statistics mean nothing.

"I've said it before, we don't believe in them, especially as a club with such a short history," he said.

"But even then, records are meant to be broken, so you're only one win or one loss away from changing the history books. I don't really take much solace from them.

"On their day Newcastle are a good team and they're a handful for anyone. They've probably been a bit inconsistent by their own admission, but we're at home so we'll be looking to take the game to them and impose our will on the game."

SuperCoach stallions

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Februari 2014 | 14.23

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

IN THE latest edition of our Serious SuperCoach series, Dem Panopoulos from TooSerious consults the zodiac to identify six SuperCoach stallions.

FOR those who don't know, the Chinese zodiac has 12 different animals representing 12 years in a cycle. This year is the year of the horse. With this in mind, I've taken a closer look at players born in 1990, the last year of the horse, who could prove to be valuable assets to your Nissan SuperCoach stable.

According to the zodiac, in 2013, those born in the year of the horse should expect to be financially better off if they work hard and especially if they are leaders within their field. However, they may be more prone to health issues.

So what does this mean to SuperCoach? Let's break it down.

SuperCoach stallions should return good value for money and increase in price if they play well or if they take on more responsibility within their side. Very positive points.

The downside is that they could potentially be prone to injuries, so be careful.

There are also lucky numbers and colours for "horses" in 2014.

Blue, Yellow, Purple and Red are the colours that can bring good luck, while numbers two, three, four and seven have a similar effect.

So bear this in mind at the selection table.

DOWNLOAD THE SUPERCOACH APP NOW

Below is a list of six SuperCoach 'horses' worthy of your consideration.

I have made an effort to provide some left-field choices with the capacity to have a major impact on your standing within the wider SuperCoach landscape.

For example, Trent Cotchin and Patrick Dangerfield are horseman, but let's face it, you don't need me to tell you they deserve consideration.

Matthew Broadbent #5 (PTA) $428,800 — DEF

Teal is a type of blue, isn't it? Regardless, Broadbent will bounce back from a disappointing 2013 season. Port Adelaide has bolstered its midfield stocks to complement the current group, meaning Broadbent is not likely to receive the same amount of opposition attention as he did last year. If he can be consistent playing off half-back, rotate through the midfield when required and continue to kick the ball more than he handballs — he could be a real steal.

Aaron Black #35 (NM) $412,900 — FWD

A general SuperCoach rule is to not pick key forwards. Why? They are inconsistent and unreliable. Black, however, doesn't fit this mould. I believe he will play as a high half-forward with permission to run up and down the wing. This should allow him to win more of the ball and therefore more SuperCoach points. Forty plus goals and 15 or more possessions a game would be a great return for a future star of the competition.

Hopefully the year of the horse injury curse spares Luke Shuey. Picture: Stewart Allen Source: News Limited

Luke Shuey #13 (WCE) $489,300 — MID

Shuey had a tough time with injury last season and given the predicted misfortune with injury "horses" are expected to have, there is an element of risk to his selection. While his kicking efficiency varies, he is an outstanding young midfielder and his tackling numbers in particular have been fantastic over the last three seasons. He has also kicked 52 goals in 60 games. Wearing the blue and yellow number 13 jumper, Shuey has the lucky numbers and colours on his back and his price is extremely attractive for someone of his class. The Eagles should be better this season and expect Shuey to play a major role in that revival.

Daniel Rich #10 (BL) $463,500 — MID

The arrival of a new coach could be what Rich needs to take his game to the next level. He has always been a good SC player, without being great, and entering his 6th season Rich is primed to explode in the lucky Brisbane colours. There will be an elemet of caution around Rich after he flopped last year on the back of a standout NAB Cup. He will learn from that and as the Brisbane midfield grows in depth, Rich should gain greater freedom. He might have burnt many last year, but give him another go as he could be the one mid-pricer who cracks the 100 regularly.

Brad Ebert #7 (PTA) $524,200 — MID

Since moving from the West, Ebert has improved all areas of his game significantly. Tackles, goals, disposals and marks have all gone up. He even recorded 15 hit-outs last season! Ebert has become a leader at the club and a big part of the Power midfield in just one season — his grunt work was a reason for their dramatic improvement. While his SC numbers went down slightly, his impact was still profound and a sign there is room for improvement. Being a bit more expensive than some other options is a bit of a turn off, but he is an extremely damaging player whose running capacity should allow him to capitalise on the new interchange cap.

Does the Zodiac say anything about bushranger beards? Picture: Zak Simmonds Source: News Corp Australia

Charlie Dixon #23 (GCS) $487,900 — FWD/RUC

This guy has it all going for him. Two and three are both lucky numbers, he wears the number 23, he is born on the 23rd of September and like all the guys listed above — he is 23 years old. Yellow and red also feature very prominently in the Gold Coast Suns guernsey, but above all else, he is a very good footballer. Some might be considering Dixon, but I doubt they will muster the courage to select him. With all of the above zodiac intel — you should. Dixon averaged more than 100 in the early parts of last season and should establish himself as one of the premier big men in the competition this year.

So if you are struggling to settle on the final composition of your Nissan SuperCoach line-up and you wish to take a punt on a mid-priced player with plenty of upside, then you could do worse than look to the zodiac and year of the horse. Go on, take a punt.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

A NEW era begins in Melbourne tonight as the Rebels finally get their season underway.

It's Tony McGahan's first game as coach, Scott Higginbotham's first as full-time skipper, former All Black Tamati Ellison's first for his new club — and Melbourne's first match since cutting ties with Kurtley Beale and James O'Connor at the end of last season.

The Rebels host a Cheetahs outfit that bounced back from an opening round shock loss to the Lions to beat the Bulls last start.

Led by brilliant fullback Willie le Roux, the Cheetahs will be looking to continue their good form against the hosts — they have triumphed on all three clashes between the two sides.

Can the Rebels kick off their 2014 campgain with a win or will the Cheetahs make it four from four?

Saturday: Law

Widden Stakes-Silver Slipper: Topmost (1967), Rainbeam (1975), Triscay (1989), Satin Shoes (2011)

Saturday: Mossfun

THE TRAINERS

Hall of Famers John Hawkes and Gai Waterhouse share the training record in the Silver Slipper with five wins each. Hawkes has won the race with Strategic (1994), Clang (1995), Domesday (2005), Plagiarize (2006) and Shaft (2007).

Waterhouse has prepared Excellerator (2001), Hasna (2003), Amelia's Dream (2008), Pierro (2012) and Sweet Idea (2013) to Silver Slipper success. Both trainers have the opportunity to improve their race record on Saturday with Team Hawkes saddling up Mossfun while Waterhouse has entered Law and Hampton Court.

THE JOCKEYS

Nash Rawiller (Law) and Hugh Bowman (Risen From Doubt) are the only jockeys riding in Saturday's race to have won it previously.

Rawiller is a two-time Silver Slipper winner on the freakish Amelia's Dream (2008) and champion colt Pierro (2012). Bowman rode Satin Shoes to win three years ago.

Darren Beadman, the retired riding legend, has the race record with five wins on Honey Be Quick (1990), Strategic (1994), Domesday (2005), Plagiarize (2006) and Shaft (2007).

Law's jockey Nash Rawiller has won the Silver Slipper on Amelia's Dream (2008) and Pierro (2012) previously. Picture: Simon Bullard Source: News Limited

THE DISTANCE

Modoc and Mossfun are the only runners to have won over 1100m. Modoc won by nearly seven lengths at Scone while Mossfun scored over the Rosehill 1100m in the Widden Stakes. Unencumbered and Hampton Court have been placed over the trip.

THE SPECIALIST

Mossfun is the only Silver Slipper runner to have won over the course and distance, Unencumbered's only defeat in his six-start career was over the Rosehill 1100m when third to Bold Circle back in the spring.

THE SPEED MAP

The small seven-horse field for the Silver Slipper does not have a designated leader. Law led throughout to win the Breeders Plate but it was significant he was ridden off the speed when he scored first-up at Randwick earlier this month.

Law may end up leading by default although I expect his stablemate Hampton Court to also settle up on the speed. One thing is for certain — Amelia's Dream's race record of 1m 2.9s set in her brilliant 2008 win is not in danger.

Law, ridden by Nash Rawiller, is likely to be up on the speed in the Silver Slipper. Source: News Limited

THE FAVOURITES

This has been a good race for favourites with seven winning in the last 20 years — Strategic (4/7, 1994), Iglesia (13/8, 1998), Excellerator ($2, 2001), Hasna ($2.50, 2003), Amelia's Dream ($1.40, 2008) and Chance Bye ($1.75, 2010). Since 2000, the only winner to start at double-figure odds was first starter Shaft at $13 in 2007.

THE MAJOR LEAD-UP RACES

MAGIC MILLIONS, JANUARY 14

Unencumbered scored his fourth win on end and his fifth from just six starts when he finishing strongly to win the Magic Millions from Oakleigh Girl.

This colt continued to improve with racing over summer and he was dominant at the Gold Coast.

Nathan Berry leads Unencumbered to victory in the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast. Picture: Richard Gosling Source: News Limited

WIDDEN STAKES, FEBRUARY 15

Mossfun settled in behind the leaders then showed good acceleration to dash clear and score a soft win in the Widden Stakes two weeks ago.

She was strong to the line to score with authority at her first run in two months. She will strip fitter again for tomorrow's race.

AND THE BIG RACE VERDICT IS ...

Fillies have dominated the Silver Slipper in the modern era, winning 10 of the last 14 renewals, and I favour Mossfun to continue that trend on Saturday.

Unbeaten in two starts, she was impressive winning the Widden Stakes two weeks ago and she does have race fitness on her side. Mossfun has good tactical speed, relaxes well in her races and has an impressive finishing sprint.

Unencumbered has won five of his six starts including the Magic Millions six weeks ago. He hasn't raced since his Gold Coast win and goes into this race without a barrier trial.

However, he is a very talented juvenile, genuine and tough, and rates as one of the hardest to beat.

Risen From Doubt was in impressive winner of the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington last spring. Picture: Michael Klein Source: News Limited

How good is Risen From Doubt? He has raced just once, winning the Maribyrnong Trial easily last spring but the form from that race has been franked with the runner-up from that race, Jabali finishing second to Earthquake in the Blue Diamond last week.

Risen From Doubt won a trial at Wyong recently and is a great chance. Law was impressive at Randwick first-up and will only improve. A strong colt with a very good turn of foot.

RAY'S TIPS

1 MOSSFUN

2 Unencumbered

3 Risen From Doubt

4 Law

FREMANTLE star Nat Fyfe is a late withdrawal for the Dockers in their NAB Challenge clash against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium tonight.

Fyfe is out with a corked leg, while new recruit Colin Sylvia is also out after sustaining a knock at training at the weekend.

The Bulldogs, who beat St Kilda at a slushy Simonds Stadium in their opening clash, welcome back a host of players including injury-prone pair Shaun Higgins and Tom Williams, along with veteran Daniel Giansiracusa.

However Liam Jones, after being named in the initial 29-man squad, will again miss.

The Dockers, looking to rebound after a shocking defeat at the hands of arch-rivals West Coast in their opening NAB Challenge game, have named a strong line-up.

Coach Ross Lyon has included Ryan Crowley, Chris Mayne, Cam Sutcliffe and Clancee Pearce for the trip to Melbourne.
