Gauci hospitalised after race fall

VETERAN jockey Darren Gauci was taken to Bendigo Hospital after suffering a heavy fall in the closing stages of the seventh race at Bendigo when he was dislodged from Royal Mephisto.

Gauci had gained a rails runs and looked likely to win before he crashed heavily.

Gauci had a swollen wrist, bloody nose and general soreness but the consensus was he had a lucky escape as it appeared as if the galloper may have rolled on him but he managed to get out of the way.

Royal Mephisto emerged safely from the spectacular crash.

The fall of the former star jockey came just two days after Peter Mertens suffered a broken collarbone, fractured ribs, a broken ankle and a punctured lung and apprentice Jordon Childs broke both of his wrists in a fall at Hamilton.
