The names to remember — and forget — when it comes to trade time.

SYDNEY 62 def RICHMOND 51

Swans studs: All aboard the Buddy bandwagon, with Lance Franklin (121) continuing his outstanding recent form, booting four goals from 17 touches and seven tackles. Dual-position player Luke Parker (121) made all of his owners crack a smile, collecting 21 touches and laying 11 tackles. Josh Kennedy (118) and Nick Malceski (102) also reached three figures.

Swans duds: As expected, Tom Derickx (36) did not have the same scoring output with Mike Pyke back in the side. Mind you, Pyke (41) had just as less impact. Rhyce Shaw (17) was subbed out just before halftime, while Jake Lloyd (37) only collected 11 touches.

Tigers studs: How good was Dustin Martin (148)? He was close to best on ground, finishing with a career-high 36 disposals. If you had bubble boy Anthony Miles (126) on the field, you're a genius. He finished with 28 disposals and eight tackles.

Tigers duds: Not a great night for Aaron Edwards (32), booting one goal from only six disposals. With 19 possessions to his name, you would've thought Reece Conca (46) would've produced a big score. But it wasn't the case, thanks to a disposal efficiency of only 58 per cent.

Justin Westhoff brings down Jordan Roughead. Source: Getty Images

PORT ADELAIDE 123 d WESTERN BULLDOGS 56

Power studs: Jay Schulz kicked eight goals, took 14 marks and had 22 disposals to notch 149 but amazingly he wasn't the top-scorer on the ground. That honour goes to Justin Westhoff who had 25 disposals — at 96 per cent efficiency — and three goals. Ollie Wines (130) and Travis Boak (123) also went big.

Power duds: Jared Polec got going late to boost his score to 63. Sub Aaron Young (8) and Angus Monfries (45) were the only Port players to score under 50.

Dogs studs: Nathan Hrovat flew the flag with an even 100 and Tom Liberatore was second-best with 93 — although that looked like it would be a lot higher after a hot start before he was shut down by Kane Cornes. Marcus Bontompelli (91) will be a player.

Dogs duds: Stewart Crameri and Jarrad Grant could only manage 31 each and Ryan Griffen's day ended in the second quarter with 47 to his name. Luke Dahlhaus started like a house on fire but finished with 63.

Brad Sewell celebrates a goal much to the disappointment of Jesse White. Picture: Colleen Petch Source: News Corp Australia

HAWTHORN 115 d COLLINGWOOD 86

Hawk studs: The Hawks spread the load with Brad Sewell top-scoring on 116, just ahead of Jordan Lewis (114) and Luke Breust (110). Unlikely heroes Matt Spangher and Ryan Shoenmakers also made three figures.

Hawk duds: Brad Hill got a taste of the Brent Macaffer tag and battled to 56 while Ben Ross had a break-even score of five and just made it after starting as the sub.

Magpie studs: Mr Reliable Scott Pendlebury was again the Pies' best, racking up 121 while Travis Cloke's five goals helped him to 103.

Magpie duds: A painful afternoon for Tom Langdon's 124,000 owners — he was out of the game early with concussion and scored just 12. Just 49 for Heritier Lumumba, and a 45 for Jesse White makes it five scores of 50 or fewer in his past six games.

Lance Franklin starred with four goals for the Swans. Picture: Wayne Ludbey Source: News Corp Australia

GOLD COAST SUNS 118 d GEELONG 78

Suns studs: He's arrived, folks. Harley Bennell (167) was enormous, booting 6.3 from 27 touches and 11 marks. But everyone's favourite SuperCoach man Gary Ablett (160) wasn't to be outdone, finishing with 33 touches, eight tackles, nine clearances and a goal. Dion Prestia (137) had another great game, while Jarrod Harbrow (119), Greg Broughton (113) and Trent McKenzie (101) all reached the ton.

Suns duds: Brandon Matera (17) was subbed out with a groin injury at half-time. Sam Day (45) would've made a few owners disappointed.

Cats studs: Steven Motlop (105) continues to improve, booting a miraculous goal in the second term. Joel Selwood (103) tried hard all night, while Mitch Duncan (100) collected a team-high 29 touches.

Cats duds: Mathew Stokes (five) was subbed out with an ankle injury. His replacement, Josh Caddy (33), didn't have much impact. Jordan Murdoch (33) failed to fire, while Tom Hawkins (52) didn't score highly despite booting 3.2.

Had Gaz as captain? The little man undoubtedly rewarded you. Picture: Richard Gosling Source: News Corp Australia

FREMANTLE 105 d BRISBANE LIONS 22

Dockers studs: Take your pick! Nat Fyfe (141) was the stand-out with 29 touches and 10 clearances, while David Mundy (129) and Lachie Neale (129) gathered 59 possessions between them. Others to crack the ton were Chris Mayne (122), Paul Duffield (113), Michael Barlow (112), Aaron Sandilands (110) and Danyle Pearce (109).

Dockers duds: Our favourite dud, Zac Dawson (32), was at his see-ball-only-spoil-ball best. Clancee Pearce (24) only had just over one quarter to have an impact.

Lions studs: Only one man deserves a mention here: Tom Rockliff (148). As his side withered under the Docker defence, Rockliff kept on fighting, finishing with 44 disposals (20 contested), 10 tackles, 12 clearances and six rebound 50s.

Lions duds: Sub Tom Cutler (nine) had a stinker, but he had ample mates — mainly youngsters. Marco Paparone (26) was quiet, while Michael Close (36) only had three possessions. Josh Green (39) was one of only three Brisbane goalkickers.

Fremantle's Nat Fyfe was the stand-out in a dominant performance. Michael Hibberd (105) collected 30 disposals across half back.

Bombers duds: Tom Bellchambers (28) was subbed with just six disposals while Courtenay Dempsey could only muster 67 points. David Zaharakis (72) played a bit-part role in the win.

Crows studs: Sam Jacobs (147) starred in the ruck with 35 hitouts to go with 20 disposals and nine marks. Scott Thompson (120) racked up 41 disposals in a brilliant midfield display.

Crows duds: Patrick Dangerfield (71) had little impact on the contest battling what appeared to be a thigh problem. Rory Sloane (84) started slowly but worked his way into the match.

Jon Patton celebrates kicking one of his two goals. He was ably supported by skipper Callan Ward (152), recruit Heath Shaw (116), Dylan Shiel (115), Stephen Coniglio (108 and forward Rhys Palmer (104).

Giants duds: Tomas Bugg (27) was oustanding on Kade Simpson, but didn't go near the ball either, while Adam Kennedy (54) and Devon Smith (79) were donw on their usual output.

Blues studs: Mitch Robinson had one of his best games for the season, Bryce Gibbs (108) played another good game and Ed Curnow (93) was solid in his return match.

Blues duds: Kade Simpson (32) struggled with the Bugg tag, Lachie Henderson (38) couldn't impact the game and Chris Yarran (66) had some moments, but not enough of good ones.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13489331173008476505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252824364654276731.post-61425167712246473802014-06-20T14:23:00.003+07:002014-06-20T14:23:25.134+07:00Van Gisbergen tops times in Top End

Shane van Gisbergen on his way to topping the times in final practice. Source: Daniel Kalisz / Getty Images

SHANE van Gisbergen will lead the charge in the Top End after heading Friday's final V8 Supercars practice session in Darwin.

On a day where form was hard to judge as teams sought to learn as much as they could on old tyres, Van Gisbergen was quickest of all when the brand new Dunlops were bolted on as the end of the session neared.

The Holden driver's 1m09.3476s lap headed Jamie Whincup, who set his good-tyre lap early, with James Courtney the only other driver to lap the Hidden Valley circuit in under 1m10s.

Rick Kelly followed up his Nissan teammates' session-topping effort earlier in the day to be fourth, ahead of Russell Ingall and Michael Caruso.

The Volvo twins were next, Robert Dahlgren ahead of Scott McLaughlin this time despite the Swede's car being pitbound for much if the session with an electrical issue.

Championship rivals Craig Lowndes and Mark Winterbottom rounded out the top 10.

Fabian Coulthard, third in the championship and fastest this morning, ended the day down in 20th sandwiched by Brad Jones Racing teammates Jason Bright and Dale Wood.

Saturday will see the V8s hit the track for two 10-minute qualifying sessions near midday ahead of two 100km-long races.

PRACTICE 2
NISSAN took a one-two sweep thanks to a string of late flyers from James Moffat and Todd Kelly.

Craig Lowndes headed most of the session until several cars opted to switch to soft tyres, with first Scott McLaughlin then the Nissan duo bettering his time.

Kelly initially held the top spot, only for Moffat to edge him with a faster lap as the chequered flags flew. A guilty plea for what?" Goddard said.

"The boys are adamant they've done nothing wrong. So is the footy club."

McLachlan said he is unaware of any offer.

"I don't know what the offer is, we don't have the visibility of it, again that's challenging and it's the situation we'd like to know I guess. I don't know whether it is an insulting offer or not, again, can't comment, because don't know," Mclachlan said.

"That is a huge problem as I see it right now, in this chair as chief executive of the AFL and you don't have visibility over this and players are saying they have an insulting offer and we don't know what it is, it has to be rectified going forward in my mind."

McLachlan said he had enormous empathy for the players and agreed the current system to deal with such an investigation is broken.

"I think this is incredibly challenging and we have to get through it, and when we do the system will be reviewed, but we are where we are with respect to this investigation and I think everyone agrees it's gone on too long and for the players sake and everyone's sake we want it brought to conclusion as quickly as we can."

McLachlan said he hoped the investigation would reach resolution quickly and would not be dragged through the courts.

"I hope it's not ... I hope we are able to get through and get to an outcome so that we are not sitting around in courts for two — three years."

McLachlan would not speculate on whether Essendon captain Jobe Watson would be stripped of his 2012 Brownlow Medal or whether board changes at club level should be mandated.

"There are so many angles that run off this, I'm committed to transparency — that time will come — but to speculate on all those difference angles is just unfair to the players and unfair to Jobe, there will be a time for that when we actually understand what's going on here."

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

McLachlan did however acknowledge he can understand why there is a perception the AFL is responsible for ongoing leaks to the media around the joint AFL-ASADA investigation.

"It didn't come from the AFL ... I can't guarantee things from down below but it didn't come from my office. But what I do, do is that I accept the perception that it may have."

When you have more than two parties it is very difficult to know, with respect to leaking, where it is coming from. ASADA have got a roll to play going forward, as does the AFL, but how we streamline this process going forward — I know Ben McDevitt feels the same way as me, it has to be improved.

McLachlan said the League remained committed to an ongoing relationship with WADA and ASADA.

"In the end we are in partnership with the government and ASADA right now, what we both agree is the process can be improved going forward ... He moves very well into space and we will have to control him."

Arjen Robben is relaxed ahead of the Cup opener. Source: Getty Images

What about revenge?

Netherlands don't even have time to consider it.

"It's history. It doesn't matter any longer," winger Arjen Robben said, referring to the 2010 defeat in Johannesburg, thanks to Andreas Iniesta's stoppage time winner. "I don't believe in revenge — 2010 was a final, this is a group match. You can't compare it."

But that's not to say the result hasn't haunted the Bayern Munich winger.

Spanish club teammate Javi Martinez said this week: "We have spoken about (Robben's missed opportunities in the 2010 final) it during our two years as teammates.

"It was a big blow for the Netherlands and for him, we have spoken a lot about those chances and Iker's saves.

"I said to him before the Champions League final in 2013 that if he got the chance again he wouldn't fail and he didn't."

Head coach Vicente Del Bosque of Spain has a few decisions to make. Source: Getty Images

Meanwhile, the biggest question mark over Spain is are they a fading force, particularly given Barcelona's campaign? You'd hardly suggest so, with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid making it to the UEFA Champions League final, and Spain boss Vicente del Bosque scoffs at suggestions his side is past its best as it begins an unprecedented quest to hold back-to-back World Cup and European Cup final trophies.

"These players have made history with the national team," Del Bosque said. "Some were youth champions back in 1999 in Nigeria [Casillas and Xavi]. But this is not a veteran side, it is mature with some younger players. We have only about five who are over 30. So we have no fear of anything like that. We hope we are at the level to defend this star we wear."

While there's a shroud of mystery over Holland's style, we all know what Spain will do. The only conundrum for del Bosque is who to leave out.

Xavi and Iker Casillas - two veterans ready for another title tilt. Source: AFP

Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba will take his place at left-back; Cezar Apilicueta is battling Atletico Madrid's Juanfran for the right-back spot; will Sergio Busquets hold off a late charge from Koke for the midfield fulcrum role and will del Bosque persist with the false No.9 player, like Cesc Fabregas, or unleash Diego Costa, Atletico's brilliant marksman, up front?

There might be the backdrop of 2010, but there's also a mutual respect between these two countries, with Xavi and van Gaal taking turns to gush praise on each other.

"I always find that if you are nice to others they are usually nice to you in return," Van Gaal said. "I have excellent memories of my period in Spain, it was one of the best times of my career. Spanish football may well be the best football in the world at the moment, they have the tactics, the technique and the physical workrate to make them number one, and that's what they are."

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13489331173008476505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252824364654276731.post-12633313479960367102014-06-13T14:23:00.001+07:002014-06-13T14:23:35.895+07:00Impressive Neymar lays down early marker

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

IT wasn't convincing but Brazil's 3-1 win over Croatia had the hallmarks of a champion team.

Selecao and its latest global phenomenon, Neymar, sounded a warning to their 31 World Cup rivals with a 3-1 win over an opponent that would have given any team a run for its money.

HOW IT HAPPENED: our live blog of the action.

OPENING CEREMONY: all the pics and colour

MORE WORLD CUP NEWS

REFFIN HELL!! The Titans have doubts over Albert Kelly (leg) and Brad Takairangi (corked bicep), but both are expected to play given the nine-day turnaround. Beau Falloon (back) will need to get through the remainder of training to prove his fitness, but is likely to return from injury at this early stage. The Titans are sweating on a decision on Queensland squad member Dave Taylor, who was called into the Origin squad on Wednesday due the injury to Corey Parker (fractured eye socket).

It's anyone's guess how the Storm will actually line-up given the Monday match and Craig Bellamy's huge 21-man squad. A final 17 won't be finalised until Sunday because an injury crisis has created second tier salary cap issues. The drama means Bellamy is not yet sure which players he can use under NRL laws.
