A FIGHTING counter-attack led by Denesh Ramdin ensured the West Indies overcame a collapse to end the opening day of the third Test in a handy position against New Zealand.
Ramdin scored 107 - his fourth Test century - and was ably assisted by veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul as the pair added 200 for the sixth wicket to reach 6-289 at stumps after being put in at Hamilton's Seddon Park.
They had earlier lost four wickets in the space of 34 balls after lunch to slump to 5-86 before the rescue mission was launched.
Ramdin was the more aggressive of the pair and brought up his ton with his 18th boundary slashing Trent Boult over the slips. The 28-year-old vice-captain was dropped twice, once by Kane Williamson on 57 and then by Tim Southee on 92.

He was finally claimed by wicketkeeper BJ Watling, albeit after a juggle, to give allrounder Corey Anderson his third wicket on a day when bowlers got little out of the pitch.
Chanderpaul was within sight of his 29th Test century at the close to finish the day on 94 with captain Darren Sammy yet to score.
After being asked to bat, the tourists lost only Kieran Powell in the morning session, but after lunch a clatter of wickets put their hopes of denying New Zealand a series win in serious doubt. Southee (2-56) and Anderson (3-25) combined to claim four wickets in quick time.

Southee got rid of Kraigg Brathwaite (45), called into the side for the injured Darren Bravo, to start the rot after earlier spilling a catch off the opener.
He then used a decision review to claim Kirk Edwards to a faint edge behind.
Marlon Samuels recklessly slashed a ball to gully and Anderson trapped Narsingh Deonarine lbw before the record sixth-wicket stand for the West Indies in New Zealand ended the hosts' dominance. Anderson was the pick of the bowlers despite leaving the field briefly after appearing to strain a hamstring.
Aside from Sunil Narine, who replaced the banned Shane Shillingford, the tourists opted for left-arm spinner Veersammy Permaul over paceman Shannon Gabriel as they made three changes to the side thrashed in Wellington.
New Zealand, seeking a first win in a three-Test series since 2006, were unchanged and captain Brendon McCullum opted to bowl after winning his first toss of the series.
