COLLINGWOOD'S quest to keep its finals hopes alive have got off to a shaky start, trailing the GWS Giants by three points at quarter time.

The inexperienced Magpies must win if they want to see any September action, however the Giants are not making it an easy task.

Ball magnets Toby Greene and Dane Swan have begun solidly, accumulating 13 and 11 disposals respectively in the first term.

Earlier, Essendon moved one step closer to securing a finals berth, holding off a brave Gold Coast unit to win by 19 points at Etihad Stadium.

Some of Essendon's more experienced players, such as Brendon Goddard and David Zaharakis, stood up in the fourth term to help secure the three-goal victory.

Goddard booted three goals from 28 disposals, while Tom Lynch finished with four goals.

In Hobart, North Melbourne secured a home elimination final, holding off Adelaide to record a seven-point win.

Jack Ziebell was the hero for North Melbourne, finishing with 4.5 from 24 disposals and eight marks, while Richard Douglas led the way for Adelaide with 27 touches.

Later, Hawthorn takes on Geelong at the MCG in a top-four blockbuster, while West Coast hosts Melbourne at Patersons Stadium.

THERE was no Brent Harvey but Jack Ziebell has willed North Melbourne to a heart-stopping seven-point win against Adelaide.

Ziebell kicked 4.5 including two big last-quarter goals in Hobart.

The Crows were coming hard to the final minute in a game of big momentum shifts.

The win ensures the Kangaroos at least host an elimination final.

Adelaide has no such joy, loosening a grip on eighth place with just one match remaining in the season. The Crows host St Kilda in the final round but even a big win might not be enough to make the finals if other results don't go their way.

For much of the game, neither side appeared able to rid themselves of goalkicking woes to seize control.

The contest came alive in a hectic third term, with four lead changes as both sides committed to attacking football.

But North seized the moment with five last-term goals to come from behind to win.

North Melbourne were cheered on by the lion's share of the 10,702 crowd at Blundstone Arena and keenly watched by a group of other clubs looking to steal Adelaide's spot in the eight.

Despite the gravity of the occasion to their finals hopes, the Crows started sluggishly.

The Kangaroos brought greater desire and quickly had an advantage on the scoreboard.

With Michael Firrito marshalling well on half-back and Ziebell contesting strongly, the Kangaroos deserved greater than their two-goal quarter-time lead.

Patrick Dangerfield willed the Crows forward and eventually his teammates replicated his desire.

Brad Crouch and Richard Douglas stepped up for Adelaide, with Jarryd Lyons kicking two for the term to give the Crows the narrowest of halftime margins.

Goals by Eddie Betts and Matthew Wright pushed the Crows on, who led by 13 points.

But the Kangaroos found inspiration in an unlikely source — Kayne Turner, the league's youngest player.

Turner, a Year 12 student at Maribyrnong College, ended half an hour without a Kangaroos goal for his second of the day.

With the match in the balance, Ziebell and Bastinac's forward-line presence built the Kangaroos a 16-point lead.

A huge tackle by Turner knocked out Adelaide's Rory Laird, providing a long pause to an otherwise frantic finish as Taylor Walker's 55m bomb gave the Crows a chance.

Adelaide said after the game Laird had concussion.

But James Podisadly faltered twice; giving away a free kick after taking a mark within scoring distance then hitting the post from close range as Adelaide's comeback was denied.

Wood was sure career was over

FIVE days before Cameron Wood's remarkable AFL return the Carlton ruckman was driving home from Ballarat a little surer his career was dead.

The 27-year-old — traded by Brisbane Lions in 2007 and delisted by Collingwood two years ago — was fresh from his 33rd VFL appearance in 18 months and remained on the Blues' rookie list.

But a whirlwind week which saw him overthrow Robbie Warnock as coach Mick Malthouse's ruckman and overpower North Melbourne star Todd Goldstein around the ground culminated in a Powerade shower as the Blues sang their song after a shock win against the Roos.

"Unbelievable," a beaming Wood said after the Friday night Etihad Stadium clash, his first AFL game in 692 days and 65th of his career.

MATCH: BLUES DOWN MISFIRING KANGAS

"It's been a whirlwind two years actually. I thought I was done, on the scrapheap, so this is beyond my wildest dreams.

"The last month I've played in Bendigo, in Preston in a bloody mudheap and at Ballarat where it was about four degrees.

"Driving back from Ballarat I was still thinking this was a long way from playing AFL again."

Carlton might have surrendered the hit-outs 34-49 in the 23-point win but Wood booted a goal and pulled down seven marks (three contested) a decade after he was recruited as a top-20 pick.

The Jarrad Waite-inspired upset delivered a death knell to the Kangaroos' top-four hopes and boosted the Blues to a 6-10 record and 13th on the ladder.

MR IMPORTANT: JARRAD'S RETURN WORTH THE WAITE

Wood was rested from the final quarter of last week's VFL clash in the first hint a return was on the cards but Malthouse waited until Thursday to deliver the news.

"I played under Mick for four years at Collingwood and he's brought me back from the scrapheap," Wood said.

"I'm in love with Mick at the moment. Mick's been really good to me as he has with a lot of the young players."

The Magpies coughed up pick 14 for Wood as the Lions secured disappointing Demon Travis Johnstone and he played just two finals and missed the 2010 flag before Nathan Buckley swung the axe.

"I need to try and play as consistently as I can because at Collingwood, that was probably my downfall," Wood said.

"My best was as good as anyone in the competition but I'd just have lulls and float in and out of matches."

GOOD NEWS: MENZEL'S KNEE SCANS

Wood's mum Sue and aunty flew from Adelaide for Friday's match and if he remains in Malthouse's side he is expected to take on Fremantle giant Aaron Sandilands in Round 19.

"I reckon he is so much more mature than what he was at Collingwood," Malthouse said.

Wood trained with Richmond before 2013 but the Tigers opted for delisted Cat Orren Stephenson.

Wood dominated for Williamstown last season where he represented the league while he has averaged 47 hit-outs this season.

"I got the call (I'd been rookie-listed) from nowhere and five days later I was training in the snow in Arizona with the boys," he said.

Waite who booted four goals on return in a best-afield display to dramatically lift the free agent's stocks.

"I hope the process is in place now that Jarrad can be a good contributor for us," Malthouse said.

Toomua adds to Brumbies’ injury woes

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham is adamant he won't take any risks with Wallabies star Matt Toomua in Saturday's crucial Super Rugby clash against the NSW Waratahs.

Toomua was undergoing scans on Monday for a groin niggle suffered in the third Test against France on Saturday.

The Brumbies need to beat the Waratahs in Sydney to have any chance of topping the Australian conference, however they could otherwise still sneak into the top six with a final round win against Western Force.

While Larkham is determined to finish the regular season with two straight wins, he'll take a cautious approach when it comes to Toomua - especially considering the Brumbies have a bye next week. "If there's any chance of making the injury worse we will not be playing him," Larkham said.

"You wouldn't run that risk."

While Toomua's would be a big loss, the Brumbies have a readymade playmaker replacement in fellow Wallaby Christian Lealiifano.

Following a season-ending injury to Toomua in 2012, Lealiifano excelled at fly-half and was named man-of-the-match in eight of the 10 games he played.

"He'll do a good job, if that's the case," Larkham said.

However Toomua's niggle is just one problem in a growing list for the Brumbies.

Joe Tomane is still in doubt with a cheekbone injury, while Wallabies utility Pat McCabe is unlikely to return from a shoulder injury.

It's expected Andrew Smith will be called into the centres alongside Tevita Kuridrani, with Jesse Mogg promoted from the bench to fullback.

Mogg returned to Canberra from Singapore on Monday as part of the Brumbies squad that came runners-up to the Blues at the inaugural World Club 10s.

The tournament's leading tryscorer with five tries from six games, Mogg said the extra space had helped with his running game.

"It was good fun. I only kicked twice in the whole comp, so I definitely came out with more confidence," he said.

In the forwards, Wallabies debutant lock Sam Carter (ankle) is still out, while injuries to Stephen Moore and Josh Mann-Rea may force the club to look to their fourth and fifth string hookers.

A Brazilian family is counting on the fingers of a single hand its hopes for Brazil to win a sixth World Cup championship, reports The Associated Press

Rather than recoil in the face of stares by curious onlookers, the 14 members of the family spanning four generations seem to embrace their physical difference with pride.

And that pride never shines more brightly than during the World Cup as they relish the attention of Brazilian media, which have trained cameras on the family as much of the South America nation crosses its fingers hoping the national team will add to its record five World Cup titles.

"Since the last World Cup we wanted Brazil to become hexacampeao," said Ana Carolina Santos da Silva, using the Portuguese term for "six-time champion" that would be the envy of the football world. "But it didn't happen, so this year we really want Brazil to achieve the sixth."

World Cup fans are expressing their love of the game in wild ways, wearing patriotic nail polish, dressing up dogs with jerseys and showing their passion under the sheets with Brazil-inspired condoms.

The usual football frenzy fashion is on full display in the South American host country's streets and stadiums, from the inevitable replica team jerseys to colourful wigs and flag-themed face paint.

But pet owners, fashionistas and love-struck fans have found their own ways to wear their team colours, with Brazil football kits for dogs, designer clothes for women and caipirinha-flavoured condoms for couples.

In the sprawling business hub of Sao Paulo, World Cup souvenirs — from the kitschiest to the trendiest — can be found anywhere, from upper-class neighbourhoods to bustling street markets.

In one well-to-do district, the MVet pet store sells a yellow, round doggie poop bag dispenser with a football printed in the middle.

Love of country has even made it into the bedroom.

Since February, DKT International, a US-based nonprofit that promotes family planning and HIV prevention, has sold 2.1 million condoms flavoured like caipirinha, Brazil's famous cocktail.

Sold under the Prudence brand, the condom is yellow with a green tip. The first 850,000 were supposed to last three months but sold out in 15 days. A pack of three sells for $1.40.

"I think there must be foreigners who will take it home as an inexpensive souvenir," said Daniel Marun, DKT's Brazil director.

"What's important for us is to pass on a message of safe sex, but also fun and pleasurable sex."

MARTINEZ BANNED

THERE is major embarrassment for Everton manager Roberto Martinez who has been kicked out of the Cup.

FIFA took action against Martinez, who is working ESPN, after he allowed his accreditation to be used by someone else who wanted to watch the Netherlands train.

The FIFA pass is strictly non-transferable and it's understood the impostor was spotted by security at Holland's Rio practice facility.

A PICTURE of a Brazilian fan standing in front of her wheelchair and clapping at a World Cup stadium has sparked controversy over the alleged "miracle." FIFA has not confirmed the authenticity of the picture and similar ones of other fans circulating on social media, but the football governing body condemned any bid to fraudulently acquire seats for the handicapped.

"We strongly condemn any attempt to wrongly use tickets reserved for disabled members of the general public," a FIFA spokesman.

"FIFA asks fans to be respectful and only request these seats if they qualify for them."

The most controversial picture shows the back of a fan wearing Brazil's yellow team jersey at the Castelao Stadium in the north-eastern city of Fortaleza, standing and applauding in front of the wheelchair.

The photo was apparently taken during Brazil's 0-0 draw with Mexico on June 17, but te authenticity is not confirmed.

CONTROVERSY overshadowed Parramatta's heavy loss to the Storm, with Chris Sandow sent to the sin-bin midway through the second half after allegedly asking referee Ben Cummins how much he was getting paid.

The cheeky quip was not caught by the audio during Fox Sports' coverage of the game, but Cummins repeated the line after signalling for Sandow to leave the field.

"Go for 10, you know what you said," Cummins told Sandow before Eels skipper Jarryd Hayne asked for an explanation.

"He's told me how much are they paying me, he can go and sit down."

The sin-binning was a huge turning point in the game, with the Storm blowing out their 24-16 lead with three tries while Sandow was off the field.

Cummins has been on the end of some heavy criticism over the past few weeks, particularly for the job he and Shayne Hayne did in State of Origin I.

Cummins was retained for Origin II but it hasn't taken long for the spotlight to return after Parramatta's frustration about a number of 50-50 calls going against them reached boiling point.

Throughout the course of the Storm-Eels clash, the referees were the main discussion point on Twitter, with Eels fans clearly feeling aggrieved by the way the game was being officiated.

And Twitter really blew up after the sin-binning with some criticising Cummins for overreacting while others questioned the discipline of Sandow.

Swans duds: As expected, Tom Derickx (36) did not have the same scoring output with Mike Pyke back in the side. Mind you, Pyke (41) had just as less impact. Rhyce Shaw (17) was subbed out just before halftime, while Jake Lloyd (37) only collected 11 touches.

Tigers studs: How good was Dustin Martin (148)? He was close to best on ground, finishing with a career-high 36 disposals. If you had bubble boy Anthony Miles (126) on the field, you're a genius. He finished with 28 disposals and eight tackles.

Power studs: Jay Schulz kicked eight goals, took 14 marks and had 22 disposals to notch 149 but amazingly he wasn't the top-scorer on the ground. That honour goes to Justin Westhoff who had 25 disposals — at 96 per cent efficiency — and three goals. Ollie Wines (130) and Travis Boak (123) also went big.

Power duds: Jared Polec got going late to boost his score to 63. Sub Aaron Young (8) and Angus Monfries (45) were the only Port players to score under 50.

Dogs studs: Nathan Hrovat flew the flag with an even 100 and Tom Liberatore was second-best with 93 — although that looked like it would be a lot higher after a hot start before he was shut down by Kane Cornes. Marcus Bontompelli (91) will be a player.

Suns studs: He's arrived, folks. Harley Bennell (167) was enormous, booting 6.3 from 27 touches and 11 marks. Giants duds: Tomas Bugg (27) was oustanding on Kade Simpson, but didn't go near the ball either, while Adam Kennedy (54) and Devon Smith (79) were donw on their usual output.

Van Gisbergen tops times in Top End

SHANE van Gisbergen will lead the charge in the Top End after heading Friday's final V8 Supercars practice session in Darwin.

On a day where form was hard to judge as teams sought to learn as much as they could on old tyres, Van Gisbergen was quickest of all when the brand new Dunlops were bolted on as the end of the session neared.

The Holden driver's 1m09.3476s lap headed Jamie Whincup, who set his good-tyre lap early, with James Courtney the only other driver to lap the Hidden Valley circuit in under 1m10s.

Rick Kelly followed up his Nissan teammates' session-topping effort earlier in the day to be fourth, ahead of Russell Ingall and Michael Caruso.

The Volvo twins were next, Robert Dahlgren ahead of Scott McLaughlin this time despite the Swede's car being pitbound for much if the session with an electrical issue.

Championship rivals Craig Lowndes and Mark Winterbottom rounded out the top 10.

Fabian Coulthard, third in the championship and fastest this morning, ended the day down in 20th sandwiched by Brad Jones Racing teammates Jason Bright and Dale Wood.

Saturday will see the V8s hit the track for two 10-minute qualifying sessions near midday ahead of two 100km-long races.

PRACTICE 2
NISSAN took a one-two sweep thanks to a string of late flyers from James Moffat and Todd Kelly.

Craig Lowndes headed most of the session until several cars opted to switch to soft tyres, with first Scott McLaughlin then the Nissan duo bettering his time.

Kelly initially held the top spot, only for Moffat to edge him with a faster lap as the chequered flags flew. Kelly was quicker again through the opening sectors of his final lap, but was unable to improve on Moffat's mark.

McLaughlin's Volvo was next ahead of Jamie Whincup and Lowndes. The Erebus Mercedes were next, Lee Holdsworth ahead of Will Davison, after the pair had sat in positions two and three ahead of the final flurry.

Jason Bright, this morning's fast man Fabian Coulthard and Moffat's Nissan teammate Michael Caruso rounded out the top ten.

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom ended the session in 15th, right behind all three of his Ford Performance Racing teammates.

Tyre conservation was the name of the game down at the Holden Racing Team, with Garth Tander the best of the four Walkinshaw cars in 18th with just six laps to his name, ahead of teammates Tim Slade and James Courtney who logged just two each.

Drivers were reporting that the track was becoming slippery as the high midday sun beat down on the circuit, with temperature playing a major role in the amount of grip on offer from the tarmac.

PRACTICE 1
FABIAN Coulthard has topped the opening session of V8 Supercars practice ahead of this weekend's SkyCity Triple Crown in Darwin.

The New Zealander lapped the 2.41km Hidden Valley circuit in 1m10.5465s, marginally quicker than James Courtney and teammate Jason Bright who filled out the top three, the trio split by just 0.0523s.

"We bedded brakes in the first part (of the session), put on our used tyres and away we went," Coulthard told v8supercars.com of the session.

The hot conditions combined with a dusty first-day surface yet to be bedded in with rubber, leaving most drivers struggling for grip.

"That's standard," Coulthard explained. "We're all in the same boat. We know where we get here it's going to be slippery, high ambient – it's definitely a recipe for a lot of cars to be sliding around."

Jamie Whincup made it an all-Holden top four ahead of Will Davison in the first of the Erebus Mercedes and Scott McLaughlin in the leading Volvo.

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom ended the session in seventh, with Scott Pye, Shane van Gisbergen and Todd Kelly rounding out the top 10.

Title rival Craig Lowndes was quickest early, but was unable to improve on his early lap as he and others chased the right setup for the hot and slippery conditions.

After also sitting inside the top five early, Russell Ingall was forced to the garages so his crew could fix an oil leak in his Holden's transmission.

Tyre preservation will be the other main focus for teams today as they do their setup work on just two pre-used sets of tyres, with an additional brand new set of Dunlops likely to be saved for a qualifying simulation run at the end of the day when the track is at its best.

AFL ‘in the dark’ over doping charges

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan says the league remains in the dark over the issuing of show-cause notices to Essendon players.

McLachlan stated he does not know what Essendon players were administered, what evidence ASADA used to justify the issuing of show-cause notices or the details of any offer of leniency.

His comments come as Bulldogs president Peter Gordon calls on ASADA to drop its action against Bomber players, and the pharmacist who supplied peptides to the Bombers says neither ASADA or the players ae ever likely to know what they were injected with.

Essendon coach Mark Thompson says some players are coping with the stress of the drugs saga better than others.

"You go through all different phases, it's like grieving," he said at a press conference on Friday morning.

"In the end you just don't want to become mentally exhausted out of the whole process which is our danger.

"At times you get angry ... you want to fight, you want to vent.

"Some guys have been there and come out of it and some players might still be in there."

Gordon, who said he was not speaking on behalf of the Bulldogs but as "a lawyer of several decades' experience" said the players were "innocent victims" who should be cleared now.

In response to questions on ABC radio about ASADA's obligation to pursue players for possible anti-doping violations, Gordon said: "What ASADA have is an obligation to pursue their statutary objectives and to do so in accordance with fairness and proper process, and in my view, in the current circumstances and the evidence as it has now been revealed, the appropriate way for them to conduct themselves is to withdraw the show-cause notices."

Gordon said the process had been "contaminated" by the extensive delay and revelations of extensive negotiations between the AFL and the anti-doping body before interviews started - and the possibility players volunteered information based on an understanding that a deal had already been struck.

The Bulldogs president said ASADA should continue to investigate Stephen Dank while the Bombers had already been punished.

"There has been references to some other club presidents this week saying Essendon should cop its right whack, well, it did last year."

Speaking for the first time in an exclusive interview with The Australian , compound pharmacist Nima Alavi says neither ASADA or the players were ever likely to know exactly what players were administered with.

Alavi supplied a batch of Thymosin peptide to Dank in January 2012 and ASADA alleges it was used untested on Essendon players. Dank has denied the claims but if they are true Alavi says it's impossible to know if players were given Thymosin Beta 4, which is banned, a permitted peptide such as Thymodulan, or something else altogether.

"If he (Dank) hasn't got it tested then he has got some compounds that could have anything in them," Alavi said. "They could have any foreign substance in them. They could have viruses in them. You have got no idea. It is very disturbing."

McLachlan said the AFL is still not privy to direct information from ASADA, despite show cause notices being issued more than a week ago.

The AFL Players' Association has urged ASADA to reveal evidence against Essendon players and McLachlan said the lack of open communication and visibility of the process was a "huge problem".

"I have spoken to Ben (ASADA chief executive Ben McDevitt), but with respect to the discussion with the players, the evidence against them on the basis of a show cause notice, I have no visibility at the moment and that is obviously a challenge," he told 3AW radio on Friday morning.

"It's the process as it runs. Simply, we are trying to get visibility — we don't have it."

Essendon utility Brendon Goddard last night said an offer from ASADA to the Essendon players to accept a reduced ban in exchange for a guilty plea was "insulting".

"What's disappointing is getting an early-guilty plea (offer). A guilty plea for what?" Goddard said.

"The boys are adamant they've done nothing wrong. So is the footy club."

McLachlan said he is unaware of any offer.

"I don't know what the offer is, we don't have the visibility of it, again that's challenging and it's the situation we'd like to know I guess. I don't know whether it is an insulting offer or not, again, can't comment, because don't know," Mclachlan said.

"That is a huge problem as I see it right now, in this chair as chief executive of the AFL and you don't have visibility over this and players are saying they have an insulting offer and we don't know what it is, it has to be rectified going forward in my mind."

McLachlan said he had enormous empathy for the players and agreed the current system to deal with such an investigation is broken.

"I think this is incredibly challenging and we have to get through it, and when we do the system will be reviewed, but we are where we are with respect to this investigation and I think everyone agrees it's gone on too long and for the players sake and everyone's sake we want it brought to conclusion as quickly as we can."

McLachlan said he hoped the investigation would reach resolution quickly and would not be dragged through the courts.

"I hope it's not ... I hope we are able to get through and get to an outcome so that we are not sitting around in courts for two — three years."

McLachlan would not speculate on whether Essendon captain Jobe Watson would be stripped of his 2012 Brownlow Medal or whether board changes at club level should be mandated.

"There are so many angles that run off this, I'm committed to transparency — that time will come — but to speculate on all those difference angles is just unfair to the players and unfair to Jobe, there will be a time for that when we actually understand what's going on here."

McLachlan did however acknowledge he can understand why there is a perception the AFL is responsible for ongoing leaks to the media around the joint AFL-ASADA investigation.

"It didn't come from the AFL ... I can't guarantee things from down below but it didn't come from my office. But what I do, do is that I accept the perception that it may have."

When you have more than two parties it is very difficult to know, with respect to leaking, where it is coming from. ASADA have got a roll to play going forward, as does the AFL, but how we streamline this process going forward — I know Ben McDevitt feels the same way as me, it has to be improved.

McLachlan said the League remained committed to an ongoing relationship with WADA and ASADA.

"In the end we are in partnership with the government and ASADA right now, what we both agree is the process can be improved going forward ... We are a signatory to an agreement with ASADA, they are our drug enforcement agency and we both agree it can be improved going forward."

The 34 current and former Essendon players issued show-cause notices by ASADA have been given an extension to respond to their charges.

The AFL Players' Association (AFLPA) confirmed on Thursday the anti-doping authority had agreed to its request to lengthen the response time.

The deadline is now July 11.

While the 34 players will have an additional two weeks to respond, it's unlikely to mean their cases are heard after the conclusion of Essendon's Federal Court action — the stated aim of the AFLPA.

The club's legal action will be first heard on June 27, along with the separate legal injunction filed by exiled coach James Hird.

On Wednesday, AFLPA chief executive Ian Prendergast called for an extension and for ASADA to hand over its evidence briefs against the 34 players.

Prendergast threatened legal action if the AFLPA was denied the briefs, though it's understood ASADA has yet to respond to that request.

For the first time, the June 27 directions hearing will be broadcast on television, with the ABC providing a live feed of the court.

Unbelievably, they could. Following Alex Song's red card for an elbow on striker Mario Mandzukic, Cameroon's Benoit Assou-Ekotto did his best to join him in being sent off ... by launching an attack on a teammate.

Cameroon coach Volker Finke was left stunned by the incident.

"It's unimaginable. I saw this happen and I need to find out exactly what happened, why exactly these two players exploded," he said.

It sparked memories of the infamous English Premier League stoush between Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer, which resulted in the Newcastle teammates both receiving red cards after coming to blows.

Match officials have been coming in for a fair amount of abuse this World Cup, but blanking them before the game even starts would seem to be a tad harsh.

An important looking besuited chap was doing some pre-match handshakes in the tunnel ahead of Chile v Spain when this awkward little moment ensued .

After greeting Spain's captain Iker Casillas, the match official to the keeper's right offered his hand but the VIP just walked on by.

Keeping his cool, the official pulled the old "that's okay, was just rubbin' my head" manoeuvre, which met the smiling approval of a sympathetic Casillas, who at least did one thing right at this World Cup.

It all ended well, with Mr VIP realising his rudeness and returning for a quick greeting before heading off to do some presumably very important stuff.

MARADONA 'BLOCKED' FROM WATCHING ARGENTINA?

He's synonymous with the World Cup, but Diego Maradona reckons he's having a hard time navigating the tournament in Brazil.

The Argentine great reportedly claimed that FIFA barred his access to his country's opening 2-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina — an accusation that the game's governing body has since denied .

Spokeswoman Delia Fischer said FIFA had not received a complaint from Maradona "nor for anybody else."

"As long as he is going in with the right media access then there shouldn't be any issue," Fischer said.

'MISS BUMBUM' BOOTED BEFORE RONALDO ARRIVES

(AFP): A former contestant in Brazil's "Miss BumBum" pageant who claims she slept with Cristiano Ronaldo has been ejected from a Portugal training session.

Andressa Urach, a former contestant in a pageant to choose Brazil's sexiest female posterior, was frogmarched out of Portugal's training ground by security staff just minutes before Ronaldo and his team took to the pitch.

Urach and the world player of the year have something of a history — or so says Urach.

British newspapers last year reported claims from her that Ronaldo, 29, had cheated on his girlfriend Irina Shayk with her. At the time, the Portuguese superstar angrily denied the claims, tweeting that he was "deeply outraged by a situation intended, in vain, to affect my personal life."

Urach, a co-host on a Brazilian variety program called the Muito Show, has been determined to get Ronaldo's attention at the World Cup.

She had a microphone in her hand and was apparently wearing official accreditation.

But, surrounded by a knot of photographers, she was unceremoniously ushered from the premises.

Live: Watmough face NRL judiciary

NSW AND Manly back-rower Anthony Watmough will face the NRL judiciary panel on Thursday evening in a bid to get his grade two dangerous throw charge downgraded.

Watmough was slugged with the charge after lifting Queensland prop Nate Myles into a dangerous position just after half-time in Wednesday's State of Origin clash at ANZ Stadium.

The 31-year-old was facing three games on the sidelines, including Origin three on July 9, with an early guilty plea. Although he has pleaded guilty to the offence, Watmough wants the charge reduced to a grade one offence which would see him miss just two games.

But he will miss four matches if he fails to convince the three-man panel at the hearing which will take place at Rugby League Central.

It is the second time a Blues player has faced the judiciary 24 hours after an Origin clash with Josh Reynolds fighting and winning his appeal against a similar charge grading in game one.

Ennis signs with Sharks

BULLDOGS captain Michael Ennis is headed for the Shire having agreed to terms with the Cronulla Sharks.

Ennis will see out his career with the Sharks after signing a two-year deal.

The veteran hooker broke the news to his teammates this morning.

It had been considered a likely move for Ennis after he knocked back the advances of the Canberra Raiders.

Ennis' long term future at the Bulldogs was always under threat after the club signed rising star Michael Lichaa, ironically from the Sharks.

This will be the 30-year-old's fifth club having started his career with Newcastle, before stints at St George and Brisbane. He has been at the Bulldogs since 2009.

Cronulla CEO Steve Noyce said: "Michael is a quality player and one who will definitely complement the roster we have here at the Sharks at present.

Cronulla captain Paul Gallen said: "Not only is he amongst the best hookers in the game, but Mick is just the sort of player you love to play alongside.

Canterbury CEO Raelene Castle said: "The Bulldogs are disappointed that we weren't able to come to an agreement with Michael for the future and we thank Michael for the enormous contribution he has made during his six years here.

Controversy rages over JWH elbow

SYDNEY Roosters prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has not been charged by the NRL match review committee for an alleged elbow on Newcastle forward Jeremy Smith.

The Knights were fuming after Saturday's 29-12 loss to the premiers, claiming Waerea-Hargreaves deliberately targeted opponents with his elbows while in possession of the ball.

Smith was taken from the field late in the second half after attempting to tackle Waerea-Hargreaves in an incident not penalised by the on-field officials.

But in charges released on Monday, the NRL found the former Kiwi international had no case to answer.

Knights coach Wayne Bennett and captain Kurt Gidley were particularly scathing of the incident after the game.

"If that is acceptable in the game then the game needs to be changed," Bennett said of the alleged elbow lift.

"We all saw it on replay and the video referee saw it and they must have all thought it was acceptable.

"I think he runs with his elbow raised," Gidley said.

"As much as we are trying to protect players from leg injuries, well people getting hit in throats is just as dangerous. Personally I do think he runs with his elbow raised and I think there will be a few players here tonight that back me up."

Roosters coach Trent Robinson maintained that Waerea-Hargreaves would not have a case to answer for the elbow lift.

"That was north-south," Robinson said.

Gollan gobbles up more silverware

THE rich carnival for Tony Gollan shows no signs of slowing down, with the stable landing the Ipswich feature double on Saturday.

Both the Eye Liner (Alma's Fury) and Ipswich Cup (Brave Ali) came with horses Gollan had only inherited for their current campaigns.

It was also a welcome win for leading apprentice Tegan Harrison, who came oh so close to winning last week's Stradbroke on Gollan's Temple Of Boom.

"This time I was on the River Lad horse," Harrison said.

"When they put pressure on this horse, he just keeps fighting.

"If something attacks him, he will keep fighting as long as he's got his head in front.

"It was on a long way from home and fortunately they (Larry Cassidy and Grey Assignment) ended up second best."

Gollan took great satisfaction in the wins of both horses, as Alma's Fury was only second up with 59kg and Brave Ali was coming off a five-week break, in which time he'd spent a week freshening up at Washpool Lodge.

"It's unbelievable to think we could win the two features," Gollan's wife Jane said.

Brave Ali was set for this race and the Caloundra and Grafton Cups immediately after he finished third to Pretty Pins in the Chairman's Handicap in early May.

"We did plan it, I just wasn't sure if I had the planning right," Gollan said.

Just to be sure, Gollan gave Brave Ali a short spin doing even time at Eagle Farm yesterday morning before heading to Ipswich.

"You never get a real line on him with his trackwork, but looking at him, he'd dappled up and looked super. I'm so proud of him," Gollan said.

"I can't wait to get to the Sunshine Coast Cup and I certainly can't wait to get to the Grafton Cup."

Alma's Fury had finished a close-up seventh in the QTC Cup two weeks earlier and the stable was confident he would be hard to toss yesterday.

"I was shooting blind going into the QTC Cup, but I knew he had improved nicely coming into this race," Gollan said.

Chris Munce felt missing last week's Stradbroke may have told on Masthead as he went to the line with the winner.

"I got a magnificent cart into the race and I was in the best spot ever," Munce said. "I ran up to win, but missing that run last week may have told."

It turned out to be a frustrating end to the day for Munce, who won on Jack 'N' Me early in the day.

He was beaten on Architect in the final event in similar style to Masthead, with the slight swing in the weights just helping tilt the scales in favour of Olympic Anthem.

SYDNEY has held off a fast-finishing Port Adelaide by four points thanks to a three-goal blitz from boom recruit Lance Franklin.

Port Adelaide trailed by 15 points at three-quarter time but when Chad Wingared kicked the opening game of the final term and Robbie Gray continued to win clearances, the Power looked like they might run over the top of Sydney.

Enter Franklin, who dropped three long bombs to give the Swans a sufficient buffer to keep the best final-term side in the competition at bay.

Alonso ready for ‘kung fu’ re-match

TWO teams famous for beautiful football met in the 2010 and this is the iconic image. Not a shot, or a feat of majesty but a kick. A kung-fu kick smack in the chest.

And the two players will meet again on Saturday….

Spain v Netherlands kicks off our World Cup group – a crucial clash not just because of the box office appeal, but the consequence of finishing second in the group: a likely date with Brazil in the round of 16.

And everyone will be watching the first time Holland's Nigel de Jong meets Xabi Alonso in midfield, the victim of his infamous "kung fu" style challenge (although, staggeringly, he wasn't sent off for it).

De Jong is ready for another round and will not take a backward step.

"You should not just get carried away that Spain is better than the Dutch team," De Jong said.

"You need to look at how best you can fight against them and how best you can comply with the Dutch school of football."

But what is that style of football?

The Dutch raised eyebrows with their physical style of play in 2010, and in a bid to thwart Spain, don't be surprised if we see it again.

Van Gaal said this week: "Physicality is part of the game of football.

"Four years ago the Dutch team didn't go over the top."

"What is very important is that when the opponent has possession we need to be compact," van Gaal said, adding that the Dutch have to "bypass stations" when they have the ball — hinting at a long-ball game unfamiliar to Dutch fans.

Previously the fluid, interchangeable 4-3-3, it now appears that there will be a huge reliance on Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder on the break, cashing in on a pragmatic, well organised defensive unit with five men at the back.

But that's not something Spain aren't prepared for.

"The greatest danger from the Netherlands comes from the three players up front; Robben, (Robin) Van Persie and (Wesley) Sneijder," Spain's Javi Martinez said on Wednesday.

"Not only with the national team, but at Bayern as well Robben is very strong on the counter-attack. He moves very well into space and we will have to control him."

What about revenge?

Netherlands don't even have time to consider it.

"It's history. It doesn't matter any longer," winger Arjen Robben said, referring to the 2010 defeat in Johannesburg, thanks to Andreas Iniesta's stoppage time winner. "I don't believe in revenge — 2010 was a final, this is a group match. You can't compare it."

But that's not to say the result hasn't haunted the Bayern Munich winger.

Spanish club teammate Javi Martinez said this week: "We have spoken about (Robben's missed opportunities in the 2010 final) it during our two years as teammates.

"It was a big blow for the Netherlands and for him, we have spoken a lot about those chances and Iker's saves.

"I said to him before the Champions League final in 2013 that if he got the chance again he wouldn't fail and he didn't."

Meanwhile, the biggest question mark over Spain is are they a fading force, particularly given Barcelona's campaign? You'd hardly suggest so, with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid making it to the UEFA Champions League final, and Spain boss Vicente del Bosque scoffs at suggestions his side is past its best as it begins an unprecedented quest to hold back-to-back World Cup and European Cup final trophies.

"These players have made history with the national team," Del Bosque said. "Some were youth champions back in 1999 in Nigeria [Casillas and Xavi]. But this is not a veteran side, it is mature with some younger players. We have only about five who are over 30. So we have no fear of anything like that. We hope we are at the level to defend this star we wear."

While there's a shroud of mystery over Holland's style, we all know what Spain will do. The only conundrum for del Bosque is who to leave out.

Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba will take his place at left-back; Cezar Apilicueta is battling Atletico Madrid's Juanfran for the right-back spot; will Sergio Busquets hold off a late charge from Koke for the midfield fulcrum role and will del Bosque persist with the false No.9 player, like Cesc Fabregas, or unleash Diego Costa, Atletico's brilliant marksman, up front?

There might be the backdrop of 2010, but there's also a mutual respect between these two countries, with Xavi and van Gaal taking turns to gush praise on each other.

"I always find that if you are nice to others they are usually nice to you in return," Van Gaal said. "I have excellent memories of my period in Spain, it was one of the best times of my career. Spanish football may well be the best football in the world at the moment, they have the tactics, the technique and the physical workrate to make them number one, and that's what they are."

Impressive Neymar lays down early marker

IT wasn't convincing but Brazil's 3-1 win over Croatia had the hallmarks of a champion team.

Selecao and its latest global phenomenon, Neymar, sounded a warning to their 31 World Cup rivals with a 3-1 win over an opponent that would have given any team a run for its money.

The refereeing turned out to be the opening game's biggest talking point after Yuichi Nishimura awarded a soft penalty when Fred went down under a Dejan Lovren challenge, which Neymar converted for his second.

Oscar then put the result beyond doubt with a stoppage time toe-poke after Croatia committed numbers forward in search of an equaliser.

But while Brazil only displayed its best in patches, their attitude in front of 62,103 fans at Arena Corinthians was workmanlike.

When Neymar equalised in the 29th minute, 10 players sprinted to celebrate with the Brazilian bench.

Only Thiago Silva - who, along with defensive partner David Luiz, was described by Croatian coach Niko Kovac as "concrete" - stayed in the centre circle preventing a quick kick-off.

As the players slowly returned to position, Thiago gestured to his teammates to settle down and focus.

And after a nervy start, Brazil was away, and with 2002 World Cup winner Felipe Scolari in charge, they have the right man leading this team that's young in terms of age but has ample caps under their collective belts.

There were no surprises in the respective XI's, but both coaches reshuffled their attacking thirds.

Neymar, who usually starts on the left, played through the centre with Oscar moving right and Hulk starting wide left in a 4-2-3-1.

With Bayern Munich's Mario Mandzukic suspended, Hull City's Nikica Jelavic led the Croatia line with Ivica Olic and Ivan Perisic switching flanks.

And it was Kovac's move that paid first dividends when Olic took advantage of his adventurous opponent Dani Alves to burst down the left.

His low cross was met by Jelavic, who got a faint touch and with little time to react, left-back Marcelo turned the ball into his own net.

Brazil was rattled. But they rolled their sleeves up and kept working.

Scolari's Neymar switch was paying off, as his roaming license caused Croatia problems all over the park.

Croatia was too slow to close the brilliant striekr for his first goal - a 20-metre strike - but thereafter his ability to skip players and beat them with sheer speed left their opponents frustrated and led to a Vedran Corluka booking for a cynical foul.

But as the tempo slowed in the second half, Real Madrid's Luka Modric began dictating the play in midfield.

And just like Brazil's first goal when Jelavic had a header saved moments earlier, Croatia had a chance moments before the counter that led to Oscar's sealer.

Kovac said the World Cup could descend into farce if such officiating continues "I think we deserved a point, I'm proud of the boys,'' Kovac said.
