Suns burn plucky Giants

THE Gold Coast's answer to the "Fab Four'' inspired the Suns to a 40-point victory over Greater Western Sydney at Metricon Stadium.

Led by the brilliant Gary Ablett along with the talented trio of young guns David Swallow, Jaeger O'Meara and Dion Prestia, the Suns midfield proved to be the difference in the battle for bragging rights between the AFL's expansion sides.

As a collective unit, the Suns elite midfielders may not have reached the same heights as Brisbane's famed "Fab Four'' from the triple premiership era but they certainly have the potency and potential to match their exploits in the years to come.

Their silver service allowed Tom Lynch to kick a career-best five goals while Giants star Jeremy Cameron booted four for the beaten but not disgraced visitors who were left to rue stray kicking in front of goal.

Ablett was his magnificent best as he finished the day with 30 disposals. 20 contested possessions, 11 clearances, 11 tackles, six inside 50s and two goals.

Surely, a third Brownlow Medal beckons.

Meanwhile, Swallow was at his combative best with 27 disposals and nine clearances while Prestia had a game-high 32 disposals.

O'Meara bounced back from a two-possession first quarter to record 15 touches in the third term alone when the Suns put the pedal down. He finished with 30 disposals, 10 tackles, seven inside 50s and five clearances.

The loss of ruckman Tom Nicholls (calf) before the game forced the Suns to throw no. 1 defender Rory Thompson into the ruck and left the Suns backline shorthanded against the talented tall timber of the Giants.

But it proved a minor hurdle on the road to the Gold Coast's fourth win of the season that keeps them inside the top eight.

The Gold Coast blew the game open with six goals to three in the third quarter with Brandon Matera and Lynch both booting two majors in the term to give the Suns a six-goal buffer at the last change.

The Giants continued to be wasteful in front of goal with ex-Cat Josh Hunt kicking three points in the quarter.

GWS was able to find space in their attacking half of the ground but were guilty of poor kicking or poor decisions when they had the Suns at their mercy.

The Gold Coast had no such problem with O'Meara inspiring the third-quarter surge with a hand in a number of goals that punished GWS errors.

The Suns led by 17 points at the main break but the margin did not indicate how close the contest was after two quarters.

GWS were on top in a host of key statistics in the first quarter but wasted numerous chances in front of goal while the Suns made more of their opportunities in perfect conditions for football.

Jonathon Patton kicked the first goal of the match but the Gold Coast piled on the next six majors with Aaron Hall booting two goals and Swallow, Lynch, Matt Shaw, and Michael Rischitelli joining in the blitz.

The Suns led by 25 points at quarter-time but the Giants came out swinging to start the second term with Patton, Cameron and Adam Tomlinson kicking goals to drag GWS to within seven points.

The Gold Coast's discipline also fell away as they conceded two costly 50 metre penalties but Ablett stopped the rot with a brilliant individual goal.

After being kept to just one possession for the term by direct opponent Tom Scully, he pounced on the Sherrin deep in attack, baulked to his right, baulked to his left and spun to his right again before snapping truly.

In further god news for the Suns, the comeback quartet of Nathan Bock, Karmichael Hunt, Charlie Dixon and Harley Bennell all got through the NEAFL match unscathed.

Big 5: EPL title showdown looms

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 25 April 2014 | 14.23

Brendan Rodgers' (left) Liverpool side can wrap up the title with a match to spare if results go their way on Sunday, but what kind of Chelsea team will Jose Mourinho (right) field? Source: Getty Images

IT takes something pretty special to overshadow Ryan Giggs' first game as manager of Manchester United.

A potentially title-defining match between Liverpool and Chelsea can be described as just that.

Liverpool can eliminate Chelsea from the title race — and move to the brink of a first English championship in 24 years — with a win at Anfield on Sunday in a contest that will capture the world's attention.

The Reds hold a five-point lead over Chelsea with three games remaining, with Manchester City a point further back in third but with a match in hand.

United is usually in title contention at this stage of the season. Not this time.

David Moyes was fired on Tuesday with the team seventh in the standings and with no chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

Giggs, a United great, has taken temporary charge of a team he has graced for 23 years and his first match is against Norwich on Saturday.

Mourinho is even having an impact on La Liga, with Atletico Madrid's on-loan goalkeeper Thibault Courtois facing an uncertain future as he becomes entangled in a tug of war between Chelsea and Atletico.

Here are five things to know about the this weekend's Premier League and La Liga action:

MOURINHO'S LAST-MINUTE MIND GAMES

Perhaps Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been trying to lull Liverpool into a false sense of security by saying this week that the Champions League was his priority this season and that he'd prefer to pick a weakened team for the Liverpool match.

Or maybe he's just being the petulant equivalent of the guy who tells you he wasn't even trying when you smash him in Fifa or Pro Evo.

All will be revealed with his team line-up on Sunday.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

The timing of the match is unfortunate for Chelsea, coming between the two legs of the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

Mourinho is sure to make changes to his team to give several players a breather, but how many?

Captain John Terry and goalkeeper Petr Cech will definitely miss out after being hurt in Tuesday's first leg.

It all puts Liverpool in a very strong position as Brendan Rodgers' team goes for a 12th straight league win that would put it in sight of the title.

A victory for Liverpool and a slip-up by Manchester City at Crystal Palace later on Sunday would mean the Reds would have a chance to clinch the title with a match to spare.

CITY NEEDS TO STORM PALACE

Aside from maybe Liverpool, was there any team Man City would prefer not to play against this weekend than Crystal Palace? Probably not.

Under the wily stewardship of manager Tony Pulis, Palace has won its last five games to climb away from the relegation zone and secure Premier League football for another season.

It's a remarkable feat, given that the promoted team had only four points when Pulis was hired in November.

City stayed in realistic title contention by beating West Bromwich Albion 3-1 on Monday but it came at a cost, with David Silva injuring his right ankle.

The absence of the Spanish playmaker for this weekend would be a huge blow as he makes City's attack tick.

Key midfielder Yaya Toure could return for City, though, and striker Sergio Aguero is slowly getting his match fitness back after a long lay-off.

City realistically needs to win all four of its remaining matches to stand a chance of winning a second league title in three years.

RYAN GETS THE (TEMPORARY) GIG

Perhaps the final vestige of David Moyes' woeful reign at Man United was removed on Thursday when the "Chosen One" banner was finally brought down from the Stretford End at Old Trafford.

Will it be replaced by another sign in honour of Ryan Giggs?

Saturday marks another new start for United in the gloomy post-Alex Ferguson era, with Giggs taking charge of his first game as the club's interim manager when Norwich visits Old Trafford.

Assisted by Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville, Giggs' priority will be to start picking up some wins and also to bring a smile back to United fans, many of whom have never seen the club so low.

Seventh-place United still has sixth position, which likely offers the final Europe League berth, to fight for. Tottenham is in situ at the moment, three points ahead.

Aaron Ramsey is back in the Arsenal line-up and in scoring form. Source: Getty Images

GUNNERS CAN GO OUT IN BLAZE OF GLORY

Arsenal is in command of the race for the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot, holding a one-point advantage over Everton with both having three games remaining.

And the Gunners have much the easier match coming up, with Newcastle visiting Emirates Stadium on Monday on the back of five straight losses which has piled the pressure on manager Alan Pardew.

With attacking midfielders Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey back fit, some cutting edge has returned to Arsenal's attack just in time for a crucial last month of the season when the team looks to seal a 17th straight campaign in Europe's top competition and to win the FA Cup final against Hull.

Everton plays at Southampton on Saturday. With its next match being at home to Man City, it's easy to see why the Merseysiders are underdogs for fourth.

CHELSEA IN TUG OF WAY OVER COURTOIS

Atletico Madrid's scoreless draw against Chelsea opened up further discussion about the future of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgium international is on-loan from Chelsea, which lost regular Petr Cech to injury during Tuesday's match. Cech's absence means 41-year-old backup Mark Schwarzer is Chelsea's No. 1 'keeper for the rest of the season, a situation manager Jose Mourinho likely pondered while watching Courtois on Tuesday.

Courtois has been one of the pillars to Atletico's success and the club is hopeful of extending the loan-deal for a fourth season.

"It's better not to think about it and to focus on just playing," said Courtois, who is on course to win the league's Zamora trophy for the goalkeeper who concedes the fewest goals in a season.

I can feel my legs, says McKinnon

INJURED Newcastle Knights star Alex McKinnon has spoken publicly for the first time since his horrific neck injury, revealing he is experiencing further movement in his arms and has feeling in his legs.

Currently undertaking rehabilitation in a Sydney hospital, McKinnon spoke via video (watch above) about his long road to recovery, offering his thanks for the support he has received from his family, his teammates, the Newcastle Knights club and the general public.

The courageous backrower, who had two operations to repair multiple neck fractures and was in an induced coma for almost a week after being stretchered off following a tackle during a game against Melbourne, says it is only "a matter of time" before he is able to get more movement in his legs.

"It's been a pretty tough month but there is a lot of improvements and those are the things that are keeping me going," McKinnon said.

"I've got a great family and they've been here every day. I've got a great partner.

"I think it was only last night I was saying: 'I wish I could do something else, I wish I was better'. And she said: 'You are better compared to two weeks ago. You were lying in a bed in Melbourne'."

"I've obviously come a long way in the four weeks, I've got a lot more movement back in my right arm and a lot of movement back in my left arm.

"It's just a matter of time before I hopefully get more movement in my legs. I've got a great sensation of feeling through my legs. It's a lot of positive signs."

McKinnon said he is likely to spend at least another two months in Sydney's Royal North Shore hospital undergoing rehabilitation.

"Yeah that's right I'm here in Sydney in rehab and I'll hopefully stay here for about two months," he said.

"It entails two sessions a day of physio which is pretty much just getting my legs moving and my arms moving.

"Obviously not moving much during the day in the last four weeks, they're a bit stiff so it does help a lot getting them moving - a lot of occupational therapy which is a lot of picking up small things.

"I was playing Connect Four yesterday which was fun, frustrating though, but fun, and just trying to do little things like that.

"Rehab's good here. It's a very nice place and I'm very lucky. I've got to hopefully go over to Ryde after two months and start a few little other things there and hopefully the progression keeps going."

McKinnon says being away from teammates has been tough and he cried watching a clip of the emotional tribute afforded to him by the club when the Knights played Cronulla more than three weeks ago.

"One of the things I miss the most is seeing the boys and being around them," he said.

"Them coming down makes me so happy, it really makes my day. It makes my week to tell you the truth.

"Even some of the things they've done for me. Even the Cronulla game, I still haven't watched the game. I've watched maybe a clip of it that went for about two minutes and I was in tears straight away.

"They've been very strong for me and having them here is unbelievable - I love seeing them."

McKinnon says the support he has received since the injury has been a massive help towards his recovery.

"I've been pretty overwhelmed with the support to tell you the truth," he said.

"I didn't expect it and I'm really overwhelmed by it all. Once we get through this little journey I really do entail going to see everyone.

"I'd love to thank everyone that's put their hand out to help, and I'm sure will still put their hand out and help in a few months' time.

"Even the nurses down in Melbourne, they had me for two weeks. I'd love to go down to the Alfred Hospital and see them. I can't emphasise how much I really do appreciate the support and how much it is helping me, even with cards or messages from people in Sweden or New Zealand or people that don't know me.

"At the start it was pretty overwhelming; I was in tears a fair bit. I didn't understand why so many people wanted to help me. Wayne (coach Bennett) made it pretty clear to me about why so many people wanted to help and I really would like to thank them eventually once I'm back."

McKinnon says the support from his family and his fiancé Teigan Power has been a constant.

"I would really like to thank my mum and dad and obviously my partner Teigan," he said.

"They've obviously got a job still and their work's been unbelievable with giving them time (off).

"Teigan's still got uni and her job and people at the Sunny Side (Tavern) have really looked after her and just being able to have them by my side for the last four weeks has helped me the most.

"I've got an unbelievable family and I could never thank them enough.

"I would really like to thank the Newcastle Knights. They've been a great help for me and especially my family the last four weeks, just really looking after them with accommodation and the little things.

"Hopefully, I get to see them all soon and everyone else at a game which I'd really enjoy."

Casualty ward: Foran in doubt for Test

NEW ZEALAND playmaker Kieran Foran is in doubt for New Zealand's Test match against Australia in less than a fortnight.

The five-eighth injured his right knee during Manly's controversial win over North Queensland on Friday.

Foran is currently in a knee brace and could miss up to a month worth of football which would rule him out of the Test with the Kiwi's facing the Kangaroos at Allianz Stadium on May 2.

Australian backrower Anthony Watmough also suffered a lower arm injury to his elbow-bicep during the match.

Ageing Saints are leading the way

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 23 April 2014 | 14.23

ST KILDA'S senior players have led the way in the Saints' 3-2 start to the AFL season and Leigh Montagna is puzzled why people are so surprised.

Key forward Nick Riewoldt is firming in Brownlow Medal betting markets and fellow veteran Lenny Hayes is firing in the midfield at 34.

"A lot of us have played relatively good footy for a long time together so I don't think it's anything new or any surprise," Montagna told reporters on Wednesday in New Zealand.

"We're just focusing on trying to lead by example for the younger kids.

"It's all just based around our effort and how we want to play."

THE ROUND 6 BAROMETER

The ninth-placed Saints will start favourites in Friday's Anzac Day clash with bottom side Brisbane in Wellington, following St Kilda's breakthrough win over Essendon by 16 points last weekend.

WHO IS ST KILDA IN AFL'S GAME OF THRONES?

Two-time All-Australian Montagna is enjoying his mentoring role with No.3 draft pick Jack Billings, who booted two goals against the Bombers in his second AFL game.

"If we're going to talk to them about what it takes to play AFL football and play consistently well, we need to be setting the tone," Montagna said.

Youngsters including No.18 draft pick Luke Dunstan, 19, and 18-year-old Billings have added midfield grunt and flair to the side, Montagna said.

"The older guys are setting the example, but the younger guys are really buying in and playing some terrific football," Montagna said.

"I've been working with Jack Billings. It was really exciting to see a bit of a glimpse of what he'll be able to produce on a regular basis.

"He's one guy that I've spent a bit of time with behind the scenes and I was really proud to see him so excited when he kicked that goal in the last quarter.

"It is exciting to see and it's probably more the third-year and fourth-year guys, Jimmy Webster, Tom Curren, to see Rhys Stanley take 13 marks. They're probably more the guys we were hoping would take that step up.

FISHER'S FINGERS CROSSED FOR LIONS

"And they're the ones who have made more of a difference this year, rather than the first-year guys." Montagna said the win over Essendon had boosted the players' self-belief about being capable of beating good sides.

"While we continue to give great effort, we'll continue to be in games," he said.

Fanning makes it a treble at Bells

THREE-time world surfing champion Mick Fanning is now also a triple winner of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach.

The 32-year-old had the best of an all-Australian final against Taj Burrow, winning 16.83 points to 13.46.

"That last nine minutes was so nerve-wracking," said Fanning afterwards. "I went for waves thinking they were going to be good and they weren't.

"Then I turned around and saw Taj on one and thought 'oh no, what's he going to do?' And then it didn't work out for him. I'm just so happy."

Fanning said Bells had always been a special event for him.

"The first ever trip away I did was down here back when I was 15 or 16," he said. "I've been coming here every year.

"This is probably the only thing I know about Easter, coming here."

Fanning won his first tour title as a wildcard at Bells way back in 2001 and also saluted at the iconic Victorian break in 2012.

The Queenslander's world title defence is now right back on track after disappointing performances at the season-opening events on the Gold Coast and Margaret River.

"Those first two events I didn't really hit the reset button hard enough," he said. "I think I got halfway there but not really."

Fanning advanced to the final by recording the highest two-wave score of the competition (18.20) in his semi-final over countryman Julian Wilson.

West Australian Burrow, who won the 2007 Rip Curl Pro at Bells, downed Hawaiian John John Florence 14.43 to 13.43 in the semis.

The semi-finals and final were contested at nearby Winkipop after conditions deteriorated in the Bells bowl.

After a slow start to his world title defence, Fanning has moved to third in the world title race behind Brazilian Gabriel Medina and Australian Joel Parkinson after three of 11 events.

Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater, defending Bells title-holder Adriano de Souza from Brazil and Parkinson were all eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, world champion Carissa Moore defended her Rip Curl Pro crown, beating Australian Tyler Wright in a repeat of last year's finale.

The Hawaiian caught the best of the waves in the decider to earn the right to ring the famous bell at the Victorian surf spot.

The victory has also secured Moore outright top spot in the chase for the 2014 world crown of surfing.

Moore just pipped the teenage Wright, beating the young Australian 16.23 to 156.77.

A delighted Moore was chaired up the beach by supporters after her victory then signed numerous autographs for young schoolgirls who had watched the heat.

"That was so much fun,'' said Moore chatted happily with Wright after the win.

Earlier 19-year-old Wright took down seven-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore in her semi-final to book her spot in the decider.

Wright dominated the heat for the 17.77 to 13.77

Moore set up her finals appearance with a hard-fought victory over Australian and former two-time Bells Beach winner Sally Fitzgibbons.

Fitzgibbons just failed to upset the world champion with her final wave of a quiet heat.

"I was thinking there is now way Sally isn't going to win this heat,'' Moore admitted after just edging out Fitzgibbons 11.10 to 10.33.

Chooseday Night Football — Anzac Day

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 22 April 2014 | 14.23

AHEAD of Friday's Anzac Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon, FOX FOOTY'S Chooseday Night Football rewinds the clock to the very first edition of this footy tradition.

In Round 4, 1995 a winless Collingwood and an undefeated Essendon met at the MCG before 94,825 people — still an Anzac Day record.

It was Gavin Brown's 150th AFL game and Jason Wild's debut, but it was Saverio Rocca who stole the show with nine majors.

Thirty-three goal were kicked for the afternoon, but the result came down to the last play of the day.

Twelve goals were scored in a cracking first quarter, before Essendon kicked away to lead by 16 points at half-time.

A seven goal to two third quarter by Collingwood turned the game in its favour by 14 points at the final break.

Essendon regained the lead in the final term through a snapped goal to James Hird, but Saverio Rocca hauled in a mark of the year contender and kicked truly to level the scores with 28 minutes gone in the final term.

In the dying seconds, Nathan Buckley burst through the middle of the ground and with disposal No. 30 elected to pass the ball to Rocca instead of having a shot — the ball was intercepted and siren rang seconds after.

"I saw Rocca, I thought he was doing it ... taking marks out of nowhere, so I just gave a short pass there," Buckley said. "But if I had it back again I wouldn't have done it," Buckley told the Herald Sun after the game.

" ... not good. I shouldn't be making mistakes like that, it's virtually cost us two points. I'm happy that on the spur of the moment I made a decision to go to `Roc' and if he'd taken the mark it would have been a good one.

"If I had it again, I would have a shot, but I can't, too bad!"

LISTEN TO THIS WEEK'S SUPERFOOTY PODCAST BELOW:

Collingwood coach Leigh Matthews refused to let Buckley shoulder the blame.

"He (Buckley) didn't quite get there, he was probably 55-60 metres out and I think (Peter) Somerville was bearing down on his left side," Matthews said on radio after the match.

"If he had got to the 50-metre mark, it would have been only a question of being accurate, but I'm not sure whether that option was open to him."

Essendon went on to finish fourth and lost its semi-final to Richmond, while Collingwood would win eight games for the season and finished in tenth position.

NZ view: Benji was past his best

Written By Unknown on Senin, 21 April 2014 | 14.23

THE Benji Marshall experiment was doomed from the start.

League to rugby conversions have a notoriously low success rate, but Marshall's failure to make any impact at the Blues has nothing to do with the intricacies of his new code and everything to do with the fact he was past his best as an athlete.

They reckon that rugby players - both codes - are a bit like boxers and the legs go first, the career follows.

As Marshall laboured his way through 50 minutes in Wellington on Friday, it wasn't his turn-and-shuffle passing that pegged him as a dead duck. It wasn't his lack of length or intricacy in his kicking game either.

No, it was the chronic lack of acceleration that no doubt troubled Blues coach John Kirwan most. It would have been the missing zip and spark that made Kirwan think that he was dealing with someone who could be at this rugby business for another five years and still be a shadow on the fast tracks of Super Rugby which tend to be dominated by young, agile men.

BENJI WANTS RELEASE TO RETURN TO NRL

Kirwan always backed himself to turn a great athlete into great rugby player. What he's discovered in the last six months is that he doesn't have a great athlete on his hands.

The Tigers, it now seems, came to that conclusion last year. The offer they made Marshall earlier was suddenly reduced. They could see the future.

The Blues rushed in where others feared to tread, and reached down the back of the couch to find all the loose change they could.

BRENDAN CANNON: GIVE IT UP, BENJI

Perhaps they should have twigged before they bought Marshall. Perhaps they should have twigged when he turned up out of condition - a long way behind the rest of the squad - but it would appear they have reached a conclusion.

It maybe unfair to judge Marshall on just 212 minutes, but if his legs have gone, he's gone.

CARLTON coach Mick Malthouse said he wanted his players to "just play" and they have responded with an opening-quarter blitz against the Western Bulldogs.

Lachie Henderson bagged three goals and Jarrad Waite two as the Blues piled on seven goals to the Dogs' three.

Bryce Gibbs and Marc Murphy are the leading ball-winners on the ground with 10 touches each.

Meanwhile, Melbourne is fighting back against Gold Coast at the MCG.

The Suns lead by 19 points at the final change but the Demons could have been much closer if they had not squandered a series of chances in the third term.

Gary Ablett is again the star with 25 disposals and a goal to the final change.

The Demons were the beneficiaries of a dubious goal-review decision in the first quarter, with a Frawley shot called a goal despite replays appearing to show a clear fist on the ball before it crossed the line.

Earlier, Patrick Dangerfield inspired Adelaide to a 65-point win over GWS.

After a quiet opening month of the season by his standards, Dangerfield returned to his explosive best with 33 disposals and five goals.

Scott Thompson also had a case of leather poisoning in his 250th game as Brenton Sanderson's team made it consecutive big wins.

SUNDAY MATCHES (all times EDT):

Adelaide 21.11 (137) defeated GWS 10.12 (72)

3.20pm — Melbourne v Gold Coast (MCG)

4.40pm — Western Bulldogs v Carlton (Etihad Stadium)

Vaughan seals miracle as Storm fume

THE video refs were again in the spotlight for the wrong reasons as Canberra staged a stunning come-from-behind 24-22 victory over Melbourne on Sunday - but not before the Storm had a controversial and crucial late try disallowed.

Backing up from their own contentious win over the Dragons last Monday night, the Storm suffered their own moment of "bad karma" when the Raiders got home on what appeared another bad call.

After trailing for the entire match, the Raiders capped off a remarkable fightback when giant prop Paul Vaughan stepped past three defenders and crashed over two more to score the winning try in the 79th minute.

But the Storm will be furious after they had a try disallowed in the 71st minute that could have secured the two competition points.

Sisa Waqa looked to crash over but referee Gerard Sutton sent it up to the video referee box as a "no try".

Despite television replays suggesting Waqa had touched down before he was bundled into touch by Jarrod Croker, video refs Luke Phillips and Matthew Rodwell could not find "sufficient" evidence to overturn the on-field ruling.

Rugby League Immortal Wally Lewis said on Channel Nine: "I'm absolutely stunned. How they came up with that decision has got me beat."

Cameron Smith tried in vain to get referee Sutton to listen.

"We see it as he's bounced short and he has gone into touch," Sutton told Smith.

Melbourne went to the break ahead 16-12 with Smith heavily involved in the Storm's opening two tries.

The Storm skipper put through a smart kick that rebounded off the posts and into Ryan Hinchcliffe's hands to open the scoring in the 9th minute.

Canberra responded when Matt Allwood showed exceptional pace to get past Justin O'Neill and carry Billy Slater over for his first NRL try in the 15th minute to lock it up at 6-all.

But Smith then caught the Raiders off-guard with a magnificent 40-20 kick on the third tackle midway through the half.

Soon after, Cooper Cronk spotted space down the right edge and a smart chip opened the way for Sisa Waqa to crash past Anthony Milford for a 12-6 lead.

Melbourne went further ahead in the 32nd minute when Mahe Fonua ran off Slater to finish off a brilliant set play.

But in the countdown to halftime, the Raiders narrowed the margin to four points when Reece Robinson finished off a spectacular last tackle act of desperation.

Melbourne lost five-eighth Ben Roberts, who suffered a knee injury likely to keep him sidelined for a couple of weeks.

The Storm kicked 22-12 clear in the 44th minute when a terrific cutout pass from Cronk put Fonua between defenders for his second try.

But the Raiders put themselves back in the contest when Milford's presence created doubt in the Storm defensive line and just enough space for Robinson to race over for his second try to make it 22-18 and set up a thrilling final quarter.

Josh Papalii pulled off a brilliant try saving tackle to deny Waqa in the 62nd minute, before the late no try kept Canberra in the game once again.

Vaughan then produced the biggest play of his short career to seal victory for the Raiders.

CANBERRA 24 (R Robinson 2 M Allwood P Vaughan tries J Croker 4 goals) bt MELBOURNE 22 (M Fonua 2 R Hinchcliffe S Waqa tries C Smith 3 goals) at GIO Stadium. Referee: Gerard Sutton, David Munro.
