IT took just two flashes of last quarter brilliance from teenager Josh Kelly to seal the Giants second win of the season and condemn Melbourne to its 12th loss in a row.

Both of Kelly's goals had class written all over them as he threaded his first from an acute angle to stretch the lead to seven points and then sealed the match with poise under pressure from 20 metres out.

After just two games it's clear why the Giants extended his contract to 2017 last week.

Kelly's quality was underpinned by a huge defensive effort from the Giants who out tackled their more experienced opponents 115-69.

Adam Treloar personified the new toughness of a team which has battled to run out matches in their first two seasons.

Treloar finished the very wet day with 33 disposals and a game high 14 tackles.

Treloar and Kelly were strongly supported by excellent performances from Shane Mumford and Callan Ward who continually drove the Giants forward from the massive 135 stoppages.

Mumford has been a colossus since moving across from the Swans in the off-season and again revelled in the slippery conditions winning a massive 60 hit-outs and kicking an important last quarter goal.

Ward again showed his skill and courage winning key contests and using the ball well.

Just 7,016 fans weathered the torrential conditions to watch a match which was mired in a defensive battle which moved from half back to half forward and rarely threatened the scorer.

With just three goals in the first half, fans could have been forgiven for thinking they were watching the Western Sydney Wanderers and not the Western Sydney Giants with a score line of 2-1 the Giants way at half time.

The match finally opened up after the break with seven goals as the Demons closed within seven points at the last change.

In a rare match playing on the forward line, James Frawley kicked just the fourth goal of his career to close within a point of the Giants as Melbourne looked to be finishing the stronger.

But Kelly's brilliance and Mumford's straight shooting put the game out of reach for the visitors.

The win returns the Giants to the top eight ahead of next week's match against the Western Bulldogs in Canberra.

The 12 game losing streak is the longest for the Demons since Ron Barassi coached Melbourne to a 20 game run of losses in the early 1980s.
