AUSTRALIA is well placed to continue its dominance of England in the fifth Test after another rollercoaster first day involving a massive middle order recovery.
For the first time all series, Alastair Cook won the toss for England and he was tempted by the greeness of the pitch and overcast conditions to insert the hosts.
As Australia moved along to 78 for the loss of just two wickets, it didn't look like a bad toss to lose, but the dismissal of Michael Clarke for 10 signalled the start of another mini collapse and suddenly the hosts were 5/97.
That brought Brad Haddin, one of the players of the series to the crease, and with Steve Smith the recovery got under way in earnest.
Smith's 115 and Haddin's quickfire 75 putting Australia beyond 300 and right back into position to complete an Ashes clean sweep.
More to come...
