JARMILA Gajdosova's forgettable streak has continued with a first-round loss to American qualifier Lauren Davis at the Sydney International.
Australia's one-time world No.25 has slipped to 265th in the rankings after going 12 months without a win on the WTA Tour and required a wildcard into the Australian Open lead-up event.
But her tournament lasted just two sets, with Gajdosova going down 6-4 7-6 (10-8) on Monday.
German fifth seed Angelique Kerber earlier scored a hard-fought victory over Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova to reach the second round.
Kerber had to recover from a first-set deficit and then needed two attempts to serve out a 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 victory on her third match point.
She next meets Estonian Kaia Kanepi, who outclassed American qualifier Victoria Duval 6-1 6-3, for a place in the quarter-finals.
In other matches, Czech left-hander Lucie Safarova beat former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-4 6-4 and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands ousted Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-4 6-3.
