Controversial New Zealand driver Shane van Gisbergen grabbed pole position for the V8 Supercars opening round race in Adelaide with a stirring drive on the street circuit on Friday.

Second fastest in the top-ten shoot out was Ford driver Mark Winterbottom followed by Holden's Craig Lowndes, who was quickest in the qualifying session.
Van Gisbergen late last year walked away from Ford team Stone Brothers Racing, citing burn out.
But months later he controversially joined family-owned Holden outfit Tekno Autosports for the 2013 season, apparently in breach of a no-contest clause in his release.
Reigning V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup will start from fifth, while James Courtney seems to have rediscovered the form that saw him capture the 2010 title with the ninth best time.
There will be a 250km race on Saturday and another on Sunday.
