V8 Supercars convert Casey Stoner has had an impressive debut on four wheels, posting competitive times in his first official Dunlop Series outings at the Clipsal 500.

The twice MotoGP world champion finished the day's second session with the eighth-fastest time, continuing his learning experience as he switches from two to four wheels.

"There's all sorts of things to contend with, but in general it's been a lot of fun today," Stoner said.

"It was a little bit different to begin with, going from a bike to a car, but you learn to run with it – that's the edge of the track and that's all you've got.

"But in general it wasn't as daunting as I thought it would be, it's a bit more easy to deal with.

"I'm pretty happy to be honest. We still need to make some improvements with the car, but it's also me getting used to the car, getting used to the track, getting used to having cars around me and not being able to turn around and check who's behind me, having to use the mirrors instead. Everyone's been really good to us today.

"There's obviously still work to do and I'm not placing any expectations on the weekends. But I'm certainly having fun and looking forward to the race tomorrow."

In Thursday morning's first session, Stoner was ninth fastest out of the 28 cars that hit the track, finishing on a 1m24.8914s lap that saw him just over a second off the time of pace-setter Chaz Mostert.

Stoner also logged the most laps of anyone (20), lopping over three seconds off his times over the course of the 40-minute long session.

Up until today, the former two-wheel star's only experience of the Adelaide track was virtual, with Stoner logging plenty of laps behind the wheel in Red Bull Racing's simulator.

At the reveal of his Pirtek and Red Bull-backed car yesterday, Stoner admitted nerves at the prospect of piloting his Commodore along the concrete-lined Clipsal streets.

"I'm slightly nervous about the walls. I've never been on a track with walls so close," he said.

The track action gets serious for Stoner on Friday, with Dunlop Series qualifying kicking off at 10:25am EDT, ahead of his first V8 Supercars race at 6:05pm EDT.
