FORMER world record holder Eamon Sullivan has today pulled out of the Australian Commonwealth Games team due to an ongoing shoulder injury and will be replaced by Sydney's Matthew Abood on the plane to Glasgow.

Sullivan won the 50m freestyle national title in April with a shock victory after just six weeks training, but then had shoulder surgery after the competition to repair damage in his joint.

The 28-year-old has had insufficient time to recover and train for Glasgow and opted to step aside from the Commonwealth Games to instead focus towards the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Abood is Sullivan's former training partner who missed Australian team selection after he was beaten in a swim-off at the trials.

Sullivan said he was disappointed to have to give up his chances of taking home a medal in the 50m freestyle event.

"This wasn't an easy decision, but it has been made with the longevity of my career in mind, and with Rio as my ultimate goal," the three-time Olympian said.

"While my shoulder operation went well, and I have done everything in my control to get myself training at the level I know is required to compete at the Commonwealth Games, it is simply not race ready and I do not feel that I will be in a position to compete at my best in Glasgow.

"In my brief time back on the team, it has been fantastic to see the great sense of team work and reinvigorated camaraderie.

"Australian swimming is heading in the right direction, and I am looking forward to seeing the team do their best in Glasgow."

Swimming Australia performance director Michael Scott praised Sullivan for making "a very mature decision with his long-term health and fitness in mind".

Australian Commonwealth Games Association CEO Perry Crosswhite said it was disappointing Sullivan would not be joining the team in Scotland.

"It's disappointing that Eamon won't be able to join us in Glasgow, and we wish him all the best with his future and recovery," said Crosswhite.

"We would like to welcome Matt Abood onto his first Commonwealth Games team and we look forward to seeing him, and the entire team swim in less than 50 days from now."
