VICTORIA continued its fight back against South Australia at the MCG today as Aaron Finch fell three runs shy of just his second Sheffield Shield century.

The Bushrangers have a 128-run lead and will resume tomorrow at 8-353 after tail enders Scott Boland (13 off 52 balls )and Jon Holland (32 of 30 balls)dug in late this afternoon.

Opener Finch, dominant in the short-form game but batting to save his place in the Bushrangers four-day side having made just 22 runs from his past five Shield innings, scored an impressive 97 before he was caught, edging to slip.

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who was forced from the ground on day two with a sore knee, joined Finch in the Bushrangers tussle hitting 10 fours on his way to 82 before he was bowled by Redbacks' paceman Gary Putland (3-93).

The Bushrangers began yesterday 147 behind after South Australia posted 343 in reply to the home team's first innings of 118.

Finch's innings included 11 fours and came off 248 balls in 313 minutes, his longest ever first class innings and his highest Shield score since he made his maiden century (102) for Victoria in March 2010.

South Australia refused to take the new ball until the 110th over , after which the Redbacks took 3-67 including the wickets of Maxwell, Dan Christian (lbw for 15) and Clint McKay (caught behind for 9).

Earlier fellow opener Rob Quiney made 37 off 122 balls before he was caught at first slip.

Peter Handscomb made 19 before he was caught at point, Cameron White (6) was out lbw while Matthew Wade (16) was caught at short cover by Phillip Hughes.

Victoria was fighting to avoid a second consecutive loss following last week's dismal innings and 38-run defeat at the hands of Western Australia.
