AUSTRALIA has steadied the ship at Adelaide Oval, with captain Michael Clarke and George Bailey combining for a key crucial partnership for the fifth wicket.
Clarke (28) and Bailey (29), in just his second Test, took the score from a troublesome 4-174 to 4-222 with just over an hour to play on the opening day of the second Ashes Test against England.

Both batsmen have given chances - Bailey on 10 to Monty Panesar and Clarke on 18 to Joe Root - but have survived some good, tight bowling to leave honours even late on day one.
