AUSTRALIA'S difficult 2013 has been reflected by the fact that just one current player has been named in the International Cricket Council's Test and one-day teams of the year.

Captain Michael Clarke and the retired Michael Hussey were included in the world Test XI while injured fast bowler Mitchell Starc is the only Australian in the combined one-day side.

Clarke was clearly the leading run-scorer in the world during the voting period from August 7 last year to August 25 this year with 1559 runs at 71, including five centuries.

Hussey scored three centuries in just six Tests and averaged 75.

Starc had the best average of any one-day bowler with more than 18 wickets during that 12-month period, claiming 28 wickets at just 16 apiece in 12 matches.

Captain and wicket-keeper MS Dhoni from India and South African opening bowler Dale Steyn were named in the combined Test side for a sixth successive year.

Top-ranked Test side South Africa had the most players in the team with four, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Steyn and Vernon Philander, while England had three, Alastair Cook, Graeme Swann and Jimmy Anderson.

The other player in the combined Test side is Indian opening batsman Cheteshwar Pujara.

Dhoni, Amla, de Villers and Anderson were also named in the ICC's one-day team of the year.
