SHAUN Marsh can't explain why his international went career spiralling out of control but the injury-prone batsman is confident he is now in better mental shape than the mess of two seasons ago.
The left-hander burst onto the scene with a century on Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2011, followed by 81 in his next innings to lay the foundation for what seemed a long stint in the baggy green.

But when he was forced to retire hurt on 44 in tough conditions against South Africa in Cape Town in his next series, it sent his career into free fall.
Marsh scored just 14 runs in his next seven Test innings - including averaging a paltry 2.83 against India two summers ago - before being axed.
Injuries have continued to plague the 30-year-old since, and when he was suspended by the Perth Scorchers for a late night of drinking during the Champions League he was almost at rock bottom.

However with the assistance of former Test opener and Western Australian coach Justin Langer Marsh has reinvented himself, scoring 304 runs at 76 during the recently completed Ryobi Cup.
"Good question, obviously a disappointing last series for me, I think it was about 18 months ago now," Marsh said when asked if he knew what went wrong against India.
"I guess I've learned a lot from it and I'm certainly a better player for it and if I do get another opportunity down the track, I'm sure I will be a better player.
"It really showed me you had to be 100 per cent mentally on top of your game and I probably wasn't during that series, I had a few distractions away from cricket which didn't help.
"But I have always said if I did get another opportunity I would be a lot better prepared."
Marsh has the chance to stake his claim for a spot in the opening Ashes Test at the Gabba when he lines up for Australia A against England starting in Hobart today.

He is one of a number of batsman around the country looking to push for the No.6 spot, alongside Australia A teammates Usman Khawaja and Alex Doolan and national Twenty20 captain George Bailey, who will lead Tasmanian against Queensland at Allan Border Field.
And although he has already had a taste of Test cricket, Marsh doesn't feel he has any inside running, despite being endorsed from former national skipper Mark Taylor.
"There are probably five, six, seven guys who are all vying for that spot and guys have performed well already, so it is crucial for everyone to be performing and scoring runs and putting your name up.
"They will pick the guy who has scored the most runs and in the best nick and we will have to wait and see who that is.
"Age shouldn't have any [bearing] on selection, if you are performing well and scoring the most runs you should be picked."
