AUSTRALIAN audiences could be set for a batsman-dominated Ashes series if the recent formguide is to be trusted.
Incumbent opener Chris Rogers continued his impressive outing against NSW in the Sheffield Shield clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After his first innings of 88, Rogers moved within sight of a century on Friday as Victoria attempted to avert an outright defeat.
Rogers' top-order teammates have also enjoyed decent time in the middle of late. Steve Smith and David Warner both struck centuries in the match against Victoria and are now averaging 70.66 and 46.66 respectively in the Sheffield Shield this season.
Michael Clarke, too, batted solidly in his two Shield outings, and might well have expected a better return than his average of 46.00 if not for a contentious lbw decision to John Hastings for 43 on Thursday.
The English batsmen also made merry before two straight days of rain at Bellerive Oval. Alistair Cook and Michael Carberry combined for an unbeaten opening stand of 318 against Australia A.
