TIM Cahill will start on the bench in Ange Postecoglou's Socceroos debut tonight against Costa Rica, with youngster Matthew Leckie preferred up front.

Cahill, who will almost certainly come on in the second half, is just one goal away from matching Damian Mori's record of 29 goals in A internationals while Lucas Neill will captain the Socceroos for the 61st time, surpassing legend Peter Wilson.

Meanwhile Postecoglou has sprung another surprise with Club Brugge's Mat Ryan preferred in goals to Borussia Dortmund's Mitch Langerak, in the wake of Mark Schwarzer's retirement.

Mark Bresciano, who was used as a holding midfielder by Holger Osieck but faces an uncertain future with a four-month ban hanging over his head, will be pushed further forward playing in the no.10 attacking midfield role.

And FC Sion's Dario Vidosic has been picked on the left win ahead of FC Utrecht's Tommy Oar for tonight's clash at Allianz Stadium.

Neill will lead an inexperienced back five, partnered by Middlesbrough's Rhys Williams with Brisbane Roar's Ivan Franjic and Heracles Almelo's Jason Davidson at right and left-back respectively.

Celtic's Tom Rogic is also likely to feature in the second half as Postecoglou plans to experiment with Australia's next game not schedule until March next year.

Postecoglou will ditch the no number 9 (central striker) system he favoured at Melbourne Victory, returning to a more conventional 4-2-3-1 formation.

"I've really got two games to get my head around what the squad will be going into the World Cup," Postecoglou said.

"This game is an opportunity to make some of those decisions and find out where we're at.

"There are guys who I'm pretty certain of what they can do, others who I want to see if they can adapt at this level, and some I hope can fit into the style. Some won't start because they're already in my plans, and there are others I want to form strong opinions of.

"Our No.1 objective is to win the game, but No.2 is to see certain individuals and how they fit into our system."

Australian line vs Costa Rica (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Franjic, Neill, Williams, Davidson; Milligan, Jedinak; Kruse, Bresciano, Vidosic; Leckie.
