NICK DAL Santo will play for North Melbourne next season after leaving St Kilda as a free agent.

Paperwork for Dal Santo's move has been lodged with the AFL and he will join the Kangaroos on a three-year deal.

The decorated Saint, a veteran of 260 games in 12 seasons at the Saints, has been weighing up his future as the club embarks on a rebuild under coach Scott Watters.

He was also courted by Essendon but has chosen to be a North Melbourne player after meeting with the Roos leadership group two weeks ago.

"Nick has been a valuable part of St Kilda for a long time and will always be remembered fondly for his contribution to the club," Watters said.

"While we are disappointed to let go of a person of Nick's calibre, he moves to a new team that presents a new opportunity to him and I would personally like to wish him well for his future."

St Kilda will now receive a compensation pick later today from the AFL.

A bid to get Kangaroos defender Luke Delaney to Seaford will have to be completed as a separate trade.

"We identified Nick as a player we wanted and we are thrilled to have finally landed him," North Melbourne list manager Cameron Joyce said.

"He will be a valuable addition to our team for many years to come. Nick is an experienced, elite midfielder who will bring some more class to our list.

"I'd like to thank St Kilda's List Manager Ameet Bains and Nick's Manager Tom Petroro for their efforts throughout this process."

Meanwhile, St Kilda and Essendon have emerged as possible suitors for Brisbane ruckman Billy Longer.

But the Saints are not prepared to swap pick 17 for Longer, the selection they received from Hawthorn as part of the Ben McEvoy deal.

Any deal to bring the 202cm Longer to Seaford would hinge on the Lions accepting a pick in the 20s.

Longer has also met with Essendon who come into play with pick 22, which it is likely to acquire from the Western Bulldogs for Stewart Crameri.

St Kilda believes Longer, the 20-year-old taken at pick 8 in the 2011 national draft, would prefer to come home to Melbourne than stay at the Gabba under new coach Justin Leppitsch.

Longer and his manager Paul Connors are expected to announce a decision on the ruckman's club of choice over the weekend.

Former Geelong defender Josh Hunt is waiting on an answer from GWS after undergoing a medical at the expansion club.

Hunt, who is also interested in exploring a punting career in the US, is desperate for a second chance at the Giants.

Western Bulldogs forward Jarrad Grant has confirmed a two-year contract extension with the Dogs.

Grant, taken at No.5 in the 2007 national draft, was playing for Williamstown reserves early last season before returning the Dogs in round 16 and kicking 12 goals in the next five games.

Bernie Vince and Paul Chapman are expected to seal moves to Melbourne and Essendon respectively, in the coming days.

A deal that sends out-of-favour Bombers forward Scott Gumbleton to Fremantle is also expected to be struck soon, while the Eagles say they have made progress with the Lions over securing Elliot Yeo.
