Brisbane co-captain Jonathan Brown says the Q Clash rivalry with the Gold Coast is about to heat up.

Brown says previous Sunshine Stoushes have been competitive but expects the latest edition of the Queensland derby to go to a whole new level with the young Suns coming of age in 2013.

"We very much respect them and I think it's going to be probably the toughest battle we've had," Brown said.

"It's still a big rivalry for us and it's important we do get bragging rights.

"This is the probably first year where people externally have thought this is a competitive battle and any side can win."

The Suns sit one win ahead of Brisbane on the AFL ladder after 14 rounds to add extra spice to the encounter.

Brown said the Gold Coast had earned the right to be in the position they are in.

"The Gold Coast, even though they're reasonably young, has an elite midfield," he said.

"By rights they're matching it with everyone in the competition now.

"They've got a young list and they're maturing and physically developing and obviously getting more confidence at senior level.

"They've still got a sprinkling of experienced players who have been fantastic players and given them good leadership."

The Lions have won the last four Q Clash matches after the Suns claimed the inaugural game in 2011.
