Fremantle has suffered a huge blow with the club announcing captain Matthew Pavlich requires Achilles tendon surgery and will miss up to six weeks of football.

The 31-year-old, who has been below his best over the opening rounds, will have surgery to repair his left Achilles tendon.

Freo general manager of football operations Chris Bond said the procedure was deemed to be the best course of action for Pavlich.

"Matthew's Achilles flared up last weekend after Friday night's match and, following an assessment by club medical staff and specialists, it was determined that the best course of action for him is surgery," Bond said.

More to come.
