Foxtel has pledged $20 million over the next four years to support grassroots and elite football in a major boost to the sport in Australia.

The partnership was announced at a special launch at Fox Sports' new Sydney headquarters on Monday.

News Limited chief executive Rupert Murdoch hailed Foxtel and Fox Sports' coverage of the world game and said the program would help develop Australia's next crop of football stars, while encouraging participation in team sport.

"Fox Sports together with their professional partnership with FFA have helped raise the profile of the sport in Australia," Murdoch told an audience including A-League stars Daniel McBreen and Brett Emerton.

"They support the dreams and aspirations of kids and parents alike."

Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop couldn't hide his excitement about what the program would mean to football at a time when the sport is "going gangbusters".

"Today is another bloody good day for Australian football," Gallop said.

"Let me tell you a few things that make football unique. Football is the game that represents Australia in all of its diversity. Football is international.

"The cool kid at school is into football.

"It's the most played sport at youth level in this country."

Under the new deal, Foxtel will extend its financial support of the game as well as offering two grassroots programs to allow kids achieve their footballing dreams.

Socceroos superstar Tim Cahill will join the Foxtel All Stars Ambition program, designed to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for kids of all ages and walks of life.

The initiative will deliver 10 two-day clinics to kids across Australia, which Foxtel chief executive Richard Freudenstein says will help grow the sport in Australia.

"Together with Fox Sports, our long association with the game has given viewers the best view of the game," he said.

"We want to help more kids play sport and be healthy. We want to encourage next generation of football stars."
