With the Roos clinging to a slender lead Nathan Grima was penalised for a push in the back to Bartel inside the Cats' attacking 50. A difficult set shot from 35m out became a certainty when Michael Firritto then kicked the ball clear to give away a 50m penalty.
The Kangaroos got off to a flyer and led the Cats by 19 points at quarter-time before extending their advantage to 35 points at half-time.
Geelong fought back to trail by nine points at the last break before kicking three goals to the Roos' two in an epic final term.
Lindsay Thomas kicked five goals for North while Tom Hawkins kicked three for Geelong.
More to come.
