Five-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore has been knocked out of the Rip Curl Pro in the quarter-finals by current world No 1 and fellow Aussie Tyler Wright.
Surfing with a broken bone in her foot, Gilmore missed by just 0.04 points with her last ride of the event to overcome Wright after a huge effort to surf four heats today following two losses during the competition.
Northern NSW surfer Wright had a nervous wait before claiming victory, with three-time Bells champion Gilmore turning in a quality last ride.
But as the judges' scores came in and the siren to end the heat sounded, Gilmore's score was a 9.1 when she needed a 9.14 to win.
It is the first time Gilmore has been eliminated at the quarter-final stage at Bells.
Gilmore had lost in both the first round on Thursday, and the third round earlier today despite a perfect 10 ride in that heat.
That forced the 25-year-old into a fourth round sudden-death heat in which she beat Hawaiian Malia Manuel to make the last eight.
Wright, who turns 19 on Sunday, was thrilled to continue her stunning start to the tour after winning the season-opening Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast and being runner-up in the second event in Western Australia.
But on a quality day of women's surfing as organisers attempt to get the semi-finals finished in excellent, consistent surf, Wright had to pull out all stops to see off Gilmore and was wondering what she had left.
"I don't know how I'm going to surf the semis - I'm fricken exhausted," Wright said.
"That was a great quarter. I was lucky (Gilmore's score) wasn't enough but either way I was happy with my performance."
Gilmore was competing with an undisplaced foot fracture - her left foot taped up after she was injured during her surprise first round loss earlier in the week.
"It's not the sort of injury that gets any worse surfing on it. It's just a case of push through the pain, grit the teeth and get through it," Gilmore said.
It made her performance in scoring a 10 and a 9.9 in her fourth round heat even more noteworthy.
