Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson says there is no timetable for Australian centre Andrew Bogut's return following the latest setback in his injury-marred NBA career.

The Boomers big man was set to take on compatriot Patty Mills when his Warriors hosted the San Antonio Spurs in Oakland on Saturday (AEDT).

But Bogut, who has missed 42 games this season due to micro-fracture surgery on his left ankle, was a late withdrawal and was subsequently ruled out indefinitely because of back spasms.

An MRI scan confirmed the source of Bogut's back trouble was a protruding disc.

Bogut did not travel to Minnesota with the Warriors and missed Sunday's 100-99 win over the Timberwolves.

Golden State are hoping he will be able to join the team at some point during their current seven-day, five-game road trip.

But his back condition is currently not conducive to travel and Jackson won't rush things.

"We're going to trust the process,'' Jackson told reporters in Minneapolis.

"We're going to be patient with his back. He's going to get treatment.

"And when he's ready he'll join us, whether (on this road trip) or at some point. But we're going to be very patient with it, make sure that he's right.''

Back injury is nothing new to the No.1 draft pick, who is averaging 7.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 22.5 minutes over his 12 games this season.

Bogut also missed more than half of the 2008-09 NBA season with a stress fracture in his lower back, one game with a mild back strain the following season and five games with a sore back during the 2010-11 season with Milwaukee.

He also missed a lot of games with a serious elbow injury suffered in a fall during the 2009-10 season.

He had been slowly finding his form since returning form the ankle injury on January 28.
