Melbourne Heart have opened 2013 in style, securing a much-needed over Newcastle Jets to move off the bottom of the ladder and jump into eighth spot pending other results.
The start of the match at AAMI Park was frenetic, with Golgol Mebrahtu scoring for the Heart inside five minutes before Ryan Griffiths levelled from the penalty spot for the Newcastle.
It was then the home side's turn to experience some joy from the spot, Heart striker Josip Tadic scoring from 12 yards after Mark Birighitti brought down Jonatan Germano in the box.
An end-to-end first half set the tone for an exciting second period, though the intensity never really matched as the Heart held on for a much-needed victory against a relentless Jets outfit.

The Jets had plenty of chances to equalise, notably to target man Emile Heskey, but Andrew Redmayne was up to the task when called upon in between the Heart sticks.
There were several heated moments in the match, notably Josh Mitchell's clash with Andrew Redmayne, though tensions never boiled over.
